Tamron 17-50 2.8 on GH1?

Hi guys, long time no see. I just want to endorse the adapter for Nikon F (with aperture control) from jinfinance. Got it recently and it works pretty well. I think it has the right amount of friction on it. Used it with my 11-16, and finally I have something of a fast wide-angle on the GH1. :D

So you're saying jinfinance makes a Nikon adapter that controls aperture on newer lenses? How much does it cost? This market is changing so rapidly!

Ok I checked out eBay, and I see the adapter now. Clarification: Your adapter is for Nikon G not F, correct? Also, I'm assuming the 11-16 you're using is the Tokina with a Nikon mount, right? Is that lens as amazing as everyone says? Final question: How exactly do you control the aperture using the jinfinance adapter? Ciecio's uses a thumbscrew, but this one looks like it somehow uses a ring.

All Nikon or Nikon compatible lenses have the F mount. Nikon = F mount period. These lenses can be divided into different versions, AI, AIS, AF-D, ... etc, and the more modern G version that does not have the aperture ring. There are many cheaper G lens adapters on eBay for as little as $50. Don't be a sucker to buy the Novoflex version.

Sorry, I use a Sony, so I have AS in-body, hence I've got the older version with no vibration compensation. If the lens has VR, then I suppose (theoretically) you can make use of it on you GH1. But I really don't know anything about this.

These adapters are just a metal tube, no electronic contacts to provide communication between the lens and the camera, and no way to send power from the camera to the lens, as the VR or any lens-based IS needs power from the camera.

Ah. Good point. OK, there we have it folks: no VR using 3rd party adapters :)

It needs more than power... it needs information! I'm pretty sure the protocols for Panasonic and Nikon are not going to be compatible electric and electronic-wise.

Ron, Eric's answered your question: Nikon lenses are all F-mount lenses. The other letters just refer to the bits they have or don't have.

The jinfinance one uses a ring to control the aperture. No click stops, and is not lubricated in any way, so it's all metal-on-metal action. Not jarring, but not the smoothest, and the noise is likely to be picked up if you have an on-camera mic.

The 11-16 is pretty good. I have a good copy, and I think it's well worth its price (and then some).

got back to this htread simply because of af100...
now im thinking of lenses to use on it! so far zoom lenses arent a problem but its really hard to find fast wides

i guess this solves the nikon dillemma!

Hey guys,

sorry, I forgot to follow up. I got the jinfinance nikon adapter with iris control and the Tamron 17-50mm.

The adapter is really good. Very good price, the shipping was fast (1 1/2 weeks from china) and the built quality is really good. Works perfectly.

The lens is also really good. A little drawback is the focus ring. Could have a longer throw. Small turns already make quite a big difference in the focus distance. I guess with a follow focus it is not so dramatic anymore. But you can definitely used it without, just a little bit more difficult. And for the price you can't beat it.

I made this video with the combo:

Low light and all the way at ISO800.

rainbowimaging on eBay now sells the same Nikon adapter out of New York. I got mine in a couple days after ordering and it works fine.

Arggh! Now ya tell me! Harha.

Still waiting patiently for mine from HK. Lens came in yesterday. Until then, I'm going to see if I can open the aperture on a friend's Nikon DSLR. I assume it will stay open, but maybe it defaults to closed when removed. Anybody know?

Got the adapter today. It took me a couple tries to figure out how it worked (I"m slow that way!), but it's quite nice. The adapter allows you to go from near closed (won't close all the way) to fully open quite quickly. The focus throw on the Tamron, as mentioned earlier, is quite short. That's fine with me, because I plan to use this in situations where I need to focus quickly like shooting b-roll in classrooms. I hope to shoot some footage over this long weekend and will post if it's anything worth viewing.

I'm looking at snagging this as well. Is there a way to lock the aperature open? I don't have an adapter with a thumbscrew. Just the standard one. I've already got a fader ND.

I'm shooting a lot of TV ads and switching primes constantly. I would like to use a zoom lens instead to speed up my shoots.

I asked the same thing earlier, but no reply. I would think if you opened it all the way, or to your chosen f-stop, on a Nikon digital camera then moved it to the GH1 it would remain at that stop. But that's just a guess.

If not, the jinfinance adapter is working great and is quite affordable. It took about 2 weeks to arrive in the U.S. from HK.

One guy who also shoots with a GH1 in town had picked up a Nikon lens without a aperture ring, he was able to wedge something in mount of the lens, that kept it wide open for him. I was hoping I could do the same here.

But I guess if I can't, I could always go for the adapter.

Got the lens, it's great. I was able to jam a rolled up sticky note into the aperture lever to keep it open. So I don't need to buy the other adapter and use it with my static one and a Fader ND.

Totally worth the money.

Hi,

I'm also about to get this Lens and jinfinance adaptor. Could someone please confirm whether autofocus will work with this setup on the GH1?.

tia.
