Tamron 17-50 2.8 on GH1?

Is there a Nikon mount version? If so you'd be able to control aperture with a m4/3 Nikon adapter that has a mechanism for it. Novoflex and ciecio7 make such ones I think.

Yes, there is a nikon mount version:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/550954-REG/Tamron_AF016NII_700_17_50mm_f_2_8_XR_Di_II.html

It says it has a built in motor, is that of importance?

I had a look at ciecio7's adapters, but couldn't find one. jinfinance however has one I think:

I also found this one:

Both of them should do, right?

Thanks alot already Marrti!

Those look like they should work. If you get one, please report back on how it performs. Also, you can email Ciecio7. He usually can have one ready quickly even if it's not currently listed on eBay. He seems to be the gold standard in this area. I have one of his NIkon F mount to M4/3 and have been happy with it.

Also, let us know what you think of the Tamron. I'm interested in this lens as well.

no apperture control. apparently theres no fourthirds support from tamron or tokina

I'd be interested in this, but I just know panny will eventually release a 2.8 OIS zoom with the GH2, it's always the waiting game with fast zooms and the GH1.

We were suggesting the Nikon version, because there are adapters (mentioned above) that allow you to control the aperture via thumbscrew. It's not a perfect solution, but it's something. If I were to use this outside, I'd keep the Fader ND on the front and control the "aperture" via the Fader.

I don't think there is anything equivalent for the Canon mount. But yeah too bad they just don't make a M4/3 or 4/3 mount. I hope Psynema is correct and Panasonic releases one (fast zoom) sooner than later.

Thanks alot. I just ordered the one from jinfinance. Not so expensive.

Could you use the focus ? is it fly by wire?
Not fly by wire. The focus ring even moves when auto focusing.

I am not talking about support, I am talking about the adapter route. I already got a nikon adapter, but without the aperture control.

Yeah, but I need the lens now, so this is not an option. Will report back.

Got the Fader as well, but I want to have the control. Also some lenses always close the iris when you take them of the body. So when you attach them to the GH1 the iris is still closed.

Doubt you want to go this route but what are your thoughts on the Leica D 14-50mm 2.8-3.5 with OIS for 4/3 (you'd need a 4/3 to m4/3 adapter) - you'd lose half a stop on the long end, but you'd have OIS and in camera aperture control. While it's not quite m4/3, at least it's closer than adapting a nikon lens.

or not sure if you have the cash but there's also the 14-35mm 2.0 SWD olympus zoom for fourthirds (which again, you'd need an adapter to m/43) but that lens is 1900 bucks.

Also, I might wanna give info on this, I sold the Leica 2 days ago, cause the non autofocus made me tolly sick, and since the focus ring isn't that precise (you can't actually rack focus smootly, I tried numberous times but the focus seem to have hotspots, like a macro mode, a regular range and a infiniti mode of some sort...) I know this sounds really wierd and I simply don't know what to think about that, so I sold it and buyed that insted, witch is supposedly very good also and support the single shot autofocus even in video mode.

Thanks for the input, but those are out of the question right now. I heard good things about the tamron, and I especially like the f2.8 throughout the zoom range. I am not really going to use the camera handheld very much, so there is no need for the OIS.

Thanks for this information as well. This lens does also look quite nice. No OIS though, right? Please report back how it works on the GH1.

Ordered the Nikon adapter with aperture controll yesterday and I will order the tamron 17-50 tomorrow.

I also ordered a reverse macro ring, so I can mount lenses backwards on the body and do some macro shots. Very interested how that goes.

I'm using the Tamron 17-50 with the Novoflex adapter on my GH1 right now and it works wonderfully. It's a very good all-in-one lens (for what it is) especially indoor shoots with available light. The lens is on my GH1 70% of the time!

Sorry I can't post a photo of my rig but I'm away from home right now with only my GF1 for company... :)

Chinkster, do you have the more expensive model with the vibration compensation? Is that the only reason that one costs more? Would that even matter when used on a GH1 with a Novoflex or Ciecio adapter? Ok no more questions!

Sorry, I use a Sony, so I have AS in-body, hence I've got the older version with no vibration compensation. If the lens has VR, then I suppose (theoretically) you can make use of it on you GH1. But I really don't know anything about this.

For comparison, here are some stills I shot with the 17-50 (pictures are not 100% sharp because I was learning how to manual focus back then):

For video, I've so far mainly used the Tamron/GH1 combo on a tripod, so the issue of VR is moot for me. But I can see how it can be desirable in run-and-gun situations. Having said that, I've used it when I went to Beijing, and if you hold the camera properly while you're shooting (and not moving) there's no problem with the resulting footage... although I'm sure I would have needed LESS re-takes if I had a lens with VR... :)
