T3i kills the t2i and 60d sales?

Some of these comments are just hilarious. I think we might be making mountains out of molehills here.

The T3i is basically going to be a T2i with a couple of new features. For the most part, it's exactly the same camera.

Selling your T2i to upgrade to a T3i almost certainly isn't worth it. If you're buying brand new today, get the T2i as it's available. If you can wait a month or two, you might as well get the T3i since it's slightly newer and a tiny bit better.

I do feel really sorry for myself though. Here I have a worthless T2i, a worthless iPhone 3G (not the 4G), a MacBook Pro that isn't the latest model, and a car that isn't even brand new. Even worse, I have a Nikkor lens that doesn't even have auto focus!

Now how am I supposed to make a movie when I have these horrible, horrible products holding me back?

I say duct tape the nikkor to your iphone3 and shoot your old car running over your obsolete macbook.

It'd be a youtube sensation!

The t2i could just be used with the kit lens to photograph the behind the scenes. Since the t2i is clearly awful for video, at least use it to document your epic iphone filmmaking in stills.

^ I'm right there with ya.........I have a 60D I bought when they came out and now since the T3i is coming out it's "totally useless" to quote the OP.

It's hard to imagine a new product that is 5% different than the old product making the old product totally worthless.

For video purposes, my 60D seems pretty useless compared to the T3i. Heck, my 7D seems even more useless (video-wise) compared to the T3i. People are underestimating the "zoom" feature. Early tests have shown no loss of quality at 3x zoom. So, a $100 50mm f/1.8 can essentially be a 150mm f/1.8 with little to no loss of quality for video mode.

Sure, I'll keep the 60D or 7D AND I'll keep my 50-150 f/2.8 for photo.... but this T3i and zoom feature really makes my other two cams seem a bit wimpy. (ESPECIALLY my 7D)

Sell your camera then and buy a t3i....... There's a lot more to a camera than just a zoom feature.

some people being neurotic about formatting the card all the time

Neurotic for some, good idea for others. Other crap gets on cards too, passed from one PC to another and back. I'd rather format my camera cards which takes a few seconds than my computer systems if a virus ends up on a card.
I automatically format cards every time I put them in the camera, it makes sense in my case.
If you have no budget for new equipment and can afford the time to take extra steps during your shoot day that's great, but if you do this for a living and have money on the line with clients waiting, it's better to get the camera that is designed to get the job done out of the box.

Well, I was being a little sarcastic but........My 60D does the exact same thing it did BEFORE the T3i was announced. It wasn't useless then and it's still not useless.

+1. Get what you need, then quit shopping and put what you've got to work. Whether something new comes out (and it WILL), won't change what your current product does.

That's a good point. But I think what I "need" now is to sell either my 60D or 7D and get a T3i. For me, the zoom is an amazingly valuable feature that should improve the quality of my event shooting (and save me money along the way!)

A firmware update would be nice for the zoom feature for the 60D/7D, but I think it's unlikely.

So.... who wants a 60D/7D.... time to hit the selling blocks.

I guess it will always be like this with Canon. You'll buy one or two DSLRs, then in 6 months a different feature will come along that will make video work easier/better. Sell. Upgrade. Repeat.

I'm not at all disappointed with either the 60D or 7D (maybe useless wasn't the right term). But the T3i -- to me -- seems a heck of a lot more USEFUL for video purposes only.

just came from a photostore locally..
people were buying 550d for..... guess what??
still pictures.

550d will be discontinued soon anyway. it will be the cheapest hdslr out there.

Soon when Digic 5 comes out you will be adding the T3 to the selling block.

Better put the money into a longer lens that you will keep as technology advances.

Sell the 7D and get a Canon 100-400mm L to put on the 60D for your events.

^ Word. I don't understand how people can just buy/sell back and forth for minor improvements... And for the people wanting to go from T2i to T3i, how much is a brand new T2i body listed for? $650? So how much would you expect to sell a used t2i body for? I'm assuming $500 at best... which is why I've decided to keep my t2i and hold off for something actually worth it. $300+ for articulating lcd and zoom feature? Sounds cool but no thanks, I'm a broke college student.

If you time everything right and pay attention to release dates, upgrades can be had at no cost. For example, I recently sold my T2i (w/ ML) for just a few dollars less than what I paid for it.

Now, isn't it smarter to recoup 95% of your purchase, and stick that into the newest body? And then, a few weeks before that one is replaced, recoup 95% of your purchase and do the same? So basically, I used my T2i as a backup cam for about a year. Now, I have to spend an extra $50 to get the T3i.

I won't have the same luck doing that with my 7D or 60D. But for Rebels, it's smart to sell while it's still the newest model out, wait a few weeks, upgrade. Repeat.

When a Rebel is a B or C cam, I have no problem selling it off and jumping on to the newest tech once it drops. It comes at little cost to me. I've sold three Rebels the past three years getting back 90-95 % of my original investment. You just have to be smart about your timing, and sell while it's still the newest model out.

Great post +1

^ LMAO... I wanted to slap myself and spit out my coffee too when the t3i was announced.... not really.

yeah, did the same thing on eBay. basically spent $50 for the T2i..having it for 9 months. not bad. sold the kit lens for almost $100 bucks last year, so all-in-all i did alright by my book. now just gotta figure out what to buy now...T3i or GH2???

got some downtime b/t projects now, so might just be really patient.

Nice! A lot of people get all cranky when you say that you buy/sell bodies so quickly. But if they're just a B or C cam and you're only paying $50-$100 to upgrade.... WHY NOT!
