Hoodman

Little bit of Velcro and the Hoodman works great for me @ $114

I shot a scene with my 7d atop a mountain earlier today in sunny weather. I threw my hood over the camera to get a nice little personal viewing booth whenever the sun got too strong. Cut out more than enough light for me to get the proper exposure. Might not be the most 'professional' method, but it's free, convenient, unobtrusive, and works like a charm.

Yeah, I can honestly say that I will never do that. Thanks everyone for the replies I already know what I need to do.

Why not? You make it seem like it's the worst thing in the world.

Scott - Hw did you do your velcro?
I've been reluctant to do it with the sticky velcro because I've been afraid the velcro would tend to pull it itself off either the camera or the hoodman.

The reason I said that was because where I live it's hotter than a mofo, and just the idea of throwing a black cloth over my head is like instant death :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

But yeah thanks everyone for your help.

Put the fuzzy side on the cam w/no problem but had to superglue the hook to the Hoodman. Keeping it simple and basic works.

Another consideration is that my setup includes a BG-E7 battery grip. I like having two batteries available for longer life as well as the better balance and feel that the grip gives the camera. Redrock, Cavision and all the others make no provision for using the grip so the 25 cents worth of velcro goes a long way.

Well, as it is in most cases you get what you pay for. And people are welcome to do whatever they want. But they need to compare apples to apples and simply saying "nearly free versus hundreds" doesn't make this accommodation.

A Hoodman is a sunshade and nothing more. I use them on the Z7U shooting network shows and they are excellent products. But they don't magnify and they don't come on and off easily or elegantly.

They don't provide camera support to a tripod. They don't allow you to mount accessories to your camera like a follow-focus or hand grips or a matte box.

So, looking at what we sell and what you can get from RR Micro or Zacuto or the others, the Hoodman just isn't in the same product set.

You know Eric, I'm getting a little tired of this. DVXuser is a forum for users to discuss trends and opinions and offer ways to help other shooters, not a platform for manufacturers to bad mouth other products or try to sell their own.

If you want to sell, take out an ad but keep your negative views about other products to yourself.

You said it.

I didn't take anything away from anyone. There are lots of good choices and I mention Red Rock Micro and Zacuto as other options for excellent product.

Furthermore, I suggested that the Hoodman is a useful product that I use myself and only pointed out that comparing one product group to something really different from a feature standpoint doesn't make sense.

I'm sorry if I offended you personally. For the record, I'm not a manufacturer. I frequently recommend products that we don't carry.

Well, I'm going to chime in on this and note that its completely inaccurate to say the Hoodman doesn't magnify. The new 3.0 diopter certainly does and i've found it great for focusing . its a big sharp picture. The only hassle for me is the mount. I'm reluctant to superglue anything on my camera but maybe that's what it takes. Someone else suggested drilling a hole in the bottom of the hoodman and screwing it to a bracket that mounts on the bottom. I've though I could do with a quick release plate. But maybe velcro is an easier solution.

How secure is the connection with the velcro Scott?

Do you worry that velcro tends to wear out after a long time.

I just got a hoodman cinema kit. 100 bucks. it's really not bad. I expected the rubber bands to be cheap but they're actually pretty strong. I have it wrapped around the camera. It shifts slightly sometimes but not terribly much. The build of the actual unit is much sturdier than I expected from hearing everyone talk about.

It gives me a large, glareless view of my LCD screen. That's all I wanted, and it works great!

Just looked at the cavision unit. That' similar to what I was thinking of. I already have a bunch of little sliding base plate units by Giotto that cost about $30. Manfrotto makes the same thing. I often place them on top of my tripod and monopod or other devices so I can quickly remountvarious cameras to different mounting solutions with one base plate. very quick way to work..

Anyway it seems you could add a second 1/4x20 screw to a long baseplate and use that to mount the hoodman just like the cavision unit. You might need to drill out a channel in the base plate for positioning. It sure would be cheap.

Well if I get off my ass and actually do it, I'll post the results.
