GH4 Surprise for GH4 owners

So maybe the big surprise is that the Shogun will be able to record to a ProRes file from the GH4.

In my mind I could really care less about surprises and rumors, and care more about Panasonic getting the HDMI port working properly, and Atomos shipping the Shogun, and having it function properly with the GH4!

It would seem weird that Atomos would license a codec to Panasonic for internal records thus rendering the Shogun useless for most GH4 users.

Why would Panasonic be licensing ProRes from Atomos? I would think they would be licensing it from Apple?

I too thought about that but read the article they linked and you will have your answer.

Small correction - Megabits not Megabytes. Uncompressed FHD is around that 117 MB/s data rate. Prores HQ is about 20 something megabytes/s. But for 4k the numbers may be closer to what you wrote.

But if ProRes HQ is only that fast, you would think that Atamos would have used plain old CF cards in the Ninja 2 instead of the super expensive CFast ones.

The ninja records in 4k UHD. 4 times the data rate of the usual FHD. It also always good to have some headroom built into Solid State media. Not sure of what speeds CF cards have now and perhaps they may go fast enough to give rock solid reliability. You may be right but that they could have used CF but CFast is so much faster I believe and they use it in the Arri Amira I think. Reliability and speed always cost

Yes I beg your pardon. Brain freeze. Shogun. Prores data rates are published online as well

Guys - I think I have something to add this rumour. I believe it is tied in to the Atomos Shogun somehow. I would be surprised if we don't get what is hinted at on the Atomos website.

'Cinema DNG over HDMI'. As far as I know this is a first as RAW has usually been over HD SDI such as with the FS700. So this would be a first and seeing as Atomos have said in various interviews how closely they have worked with Panasonic/Sony I can see this being perhaps half of the rumour.

That makes sense and I don't doubt it's a strong possibility. I do question how useful that would be for the majority of people buying a GH4. It's certainly a strong selling point when you consider that a lot of people buy things they'll never actually use but like the idea they can because they "might" one day use it.

However it feels like on this end of the spectrum the tide has been shifting from an earlier desire for raw to a desire for a stronger sensor and more efficient codec. Especially once people have gotten a taste of the amount of storage space raw requires and then had second thoughts about whether they really needed it or wanted to deal with it. And that's just with cameras that can record it internally like the BMC and ML Canons that don't require additional expensive external recorders strapped to the top of their little cameras.

Nice to have but... 10Bit 4:2:2 H.264 at a decent bitrate internally with a log profile I think would still suit the GH4 crowd better. But if they can do all of the above, then everyone wins.

If true, I find that a bit disappointing I have to buy another $2,000 product to take advantage of this feature.

But it's all worth it as it is RAW!!! More alternatives are better, but don't know if this will happen. Anyways, anyone shooting seriously with RAW will need a monitor, so call it $1,000 more for DNG. Just wish it had DNG support for higher frame rates even if it was only FullHD.

I agree that if it is a possibility that it would be great to be able to have the option. But yes another grand here and there is annoying. Why don't the big boys with super powerful processing built into their cameras do what Blackmagic Design do and just give us internal DNG. So much simpler and desirable.
Even as a reasonably charged firmware update - I would buy

This can't be true, If it does I will sell all my 6 GH4 (lol)

Or you could just keep using your GH4 as you intended when you bought it. It's an added feature, if you personally have no use for it, so be it. Really shouldn't be upsetting you. You still have a great camera.

Nah - just sell three and buy three Shoguns and you will be good to go. Who needs 6 anyway? Joking of course. I too have my doubts because of the general slow movement of big coporations. The GH4 has done very well for Panasonic and is such a mature product that perhaps someone has realised that a tweak here and there is way easier than a totally new slightly better product in a few years time. I mean an external recorder will usually do higher data rates than internal recording on small camera bodies anyway. So now that the HDMI is set free it's not a codec issue as much that will separate it from higher end cams but internals, frame rates, sensor type etc. They may as well make hay while the sun is shining IMHO. I so so wish this is one that is true. . . . . .

The GH4 can use Micro P2. Panasonic can add different codecs that require the speed that Micro P2 offers instead of having to rely on the Shogun for a better codec. I would rather pay a premium on Micro P2 for a better codec to record internally.
[h=3]OVERVIEW[/h]The world’s first UHS-II complaint memory card*, the AJ-P2M064AG is a 64GB microP2 card that will guarantee data writing up to the class200 mode of AVC-ULTRA, the company’s newest compression system**. With an SD card form factor, the MicroP2 cards will ensure high-speed transfer and high reliability. Furthering the versatility of the microP2 card adapter and microP2 card slots, their design allows Class 10 SDHC/SDXC cards (at bit rates only up to 50Mbps) to be used in P2 products***.

The microP2 card’s double-layered UHS-II interface facilitates transfer speeds of 2.0 Gpbs (1.7 times faster than standard P2 media, and 12x faster than ordinary SD media). Reliability is defined by Proof7 strength (resistance to water/dust, static electricity, bending and twisting, magnet, X-ray, wide temperature range, and safety built-in-fuse ); a flash memory error correction system, equivalent to a RAID system, to greatly strengthen data retention reliability; a Lifetime Counter that gives a notification when the card approaches the end of its life cycle, which is defined as reusable for up to five years when recorded on once daily, at full capacity; 100% screened flash memory; a Content Protection System (CPS) that password-protects the card; and a QR code for scanning and identification.

Panasonic’s microP2 solid-state UHS-II compliant memory cards ensure highly reliable video, audio, and metadata recording, especially in challenging conditions of extreme temperature range, shock, and vibration. P2 cards allow professional users to benefit from a fast, easy, file-based workflow and exceptional reliability.

• Same form as an SD Card, 64GB and 32GB sizes
• High speed transfer of 2.0 Gbps (1.7X faster than standard P2 media)
• Guaranteed data writing up to AVC-ULTRA Class200 mode
• Proof 7 strength reliability
• Accessories: AJ-P2AD1 microP2 adapter and AJ-MPD1 microP2 drive

I don't think the nature of the camera will change so drastically that you'll get entirely new recording modes and wildness like raw (hope I'm wrong). I think they will work with Atomos to polish the HDMI output, offer a log profile and (hopefully) will tweak the color science so it looks better out of the box.
