Sucker Punch

It's been a week since the film opened. At some point discussion of spoilers is inevitable.

Cool username. Jawas are my favorite. Little used car dealers.
The film hasn't opened everywhere yet. Not in Sweden where I live, and even if it opens in my small town it'll take a few weeks.

And yeah I kinda hate this nick. It doesn't have anything to do with star wars. I should probably change it.

Personally I think everyone should at the very least have a "Spoilers" warning before every spoiler. Not everyone sees a film on opening week.

I sometimes go on these boards to find out what people think of a movie, then someone talks about the ending without consequence and ruins the film for me. I've had two films ruined on these boards because individuals didn't put a spoiler warning. Moon is one of those films.

Please accept my apologies for the spoiler. I've been away for the boards and I didn't take the time to get reacquainted with film discussion etiquette.

I think it's just kind of iffy on these boards. Some put "spoilers", some don't need and have every right to not think it's important. When discussing a film you're going to run into spoilers...

I think something needs to be set into groundwork...

I usually say something about "SPOILERS BELOW", but I think anyone who is in a film discussion forum / blog / review would be aware that there will be spoilers. A film can hardly be discussed at any level without them - unless you're expecting a review of the VFX only - and even then...

Yeah I'm sorry also I sounded kind of like a dick in the way I put it. There's been a lot of stress lately and I really didn't mean to come off as a jerk.

I hope you didn't take offense, Billz.

Erik: Isn't there like a spoiler-button that could be put on the board that hides the text?

DOUBLE FULL ON WOOT ALL THE WAY ! what does it mean ? that's what i got form it. After that idea settled I enjoyed both sides of the world. There's some bad acting and some great acting aswell

Does anyone think that the fantasy worlds were not born from Babydoll, but Sweet Pea? Sweat Pea survives, so it's her story to tell. By doing so, the bus driver becomes her savior and she incorporates him into her action fantasies.
The film is deep but not that deep :)

CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!!!

Was really hoping this was going to be a decent romp but I thought the fantasy worlds were kind of pointless. Didn't worry for the characters.

Nightmare on Elm Street is an example of how to make us worry for the characters. How boring would have elm st been if a character didn't get scathed until near the very end? If the girls in Sucker were wounded in say the first fantasy then maybe I would have cared what happened in the other sequences. I was bored in the very first sequence and then remember "ah, ****" when I realized I still had to sit through four more.

Also interesting that the two fantasy worlds were only cut simultaneously together once. Would have been the easiest way to raise the tension, I assume Snyder steered away from this on purpose.

I'm still not entirely sure I get the movie, think the comment about Baby Doll being a figment of Sweet Pea's imagination was right but does that mean the opening sequence happened to Sweet Pea? I feel retarded and have to lay down.

MORE SPOILERS!!!!!

Been reading about people's interpretation of the story and there seems to be so much confusion and differing theories, that's either really good or really bad storytelling.

Been thinking about the ending... The story is Babydoll's and as she is labotomized(?) she fantasizes about Sweat Pea escaping to paradise (there is a street sign that ties this in "welcome to paradise"). Also a comment Is made after Babydoll is labotomized that she looks like she is in paradise. The other girls just play a facet of BDs personality, she uses their likeness as she met them at the asylum.

Some people have theorized that when Babydoll is dancing she is actuall being sexually abused in the real world. Sounds plausible but Blue says at the end that he is finally about to "have her" counters this as he is clearly the orderly with the bad conduct.

Not sure I got what I was supposed to get. I know people who think this movie is amazing. I kind of think I get what he was going for, but I wish it was the 70s, or Zack Snyder did a lot of drugs or something, because I saw some potential for the fantasy scenes to get very odd and trippy, but instead they were exceptionally mundane. Like boring and mundane and lacking any imagination. That was disappointing.

What am I missing?

PS, but if this movie cost $82 mil like I read, it's a downright microbudget feature these days...Snyder deserves something for bringing it in so cheap, that's for sure...

So...has Scott Glenn now become David Carradine?

lol

Wow, this movie was a friggin mess. Some of the best special effects and stunts I've ever seen with some truly cool bad guys -- and all for nothing.

What a waste of some really inspired FX work. Glad I held off on buying it and just watched it via Netflix instead.

OK, finally saw it. The ending was profoundly disappointing (seemed like we didn't get the final showdown it was implied we'd get), but until then . . . sorry, it was glorious. As I said early in this thread, I knew full well it wasn't going to be Godot and set my expectations very low.

A very big disappointment. I get what he wanted to do, but it fails in a very important level: the script.

Spoilers

The problem was that we were supposed to "see" what the lead character was imagining during those action scenes. No way would her come up with that imagery. That imagery is incredibly elaborate and full of cultural and historical references. While those are supposed to be "Dream sequences", suspension of disbelief is still applied here. And what those scenes turned out to be were "demos" of the directors own dreams, unrelated to the characters.

Another level where thee action scenes failed, for me, were the complete lack of the sensation of danger. When they went into "the zone" ( or their action dreams) it just, well, felt like an elaborate fireworks display that ended with the male characters with their jaws dropping. The story and execution is incredibly similar to a movie called "The Fall", but "THe Fall", while still flawed, had incredible, "real" non CG cinematography.

Anyway, I thought it was a mediocre film, with excellent short "demos" of action sequences and a killer soundtrack. Loved it to the point of buying it.

CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!!! :cheesy:

Well, it's a sucker punch to us. I enjoyed it but it's still the story of a girl dreaming of a dance club (and obviously she knows what is done there but doesn't know how to dance, that's why we don´t see it) and how to scape from there getting deeper into her imagination. the only problem, as Sérgio says, is how the hell she could had imagined all that stuff. So in exchange of an "punch line intro" we should have seen how she got feeded that imaginery or at least som kind of overview; films, comics, books or whatever.

Here's what I did every time a pesky question of plot popped up its head.

I beat it down with a big cartoon mallet. I crushed it dead.

I know it won't withstand a moment of scrutiny, so I don't even bother with it.
