Sucker Punch

I'm not reading into the movie, it is just plain out boring. And I am an Anime FREAK. Any other anime geek will be able to point out where most of Snyder's shots were ripped from.

It had some cool sequences, otherwise, weakly told and sold. Blah.

80+Million dollars huh?

Sad.

The way I see it, Baby Doll imagined herself as a sex object in a place of sexual slavery from which she must escape because she was clearly dealing with sexual abuse as something which was haunting her. It's not clear in the opening whether the sexual abuse from her stepfather was new or had happened before, but it seemed to me it'd happened before. That gives her reason to externalize her fight against the sexual abuse by imagining the mental institute as a brothel and herself as a sex slave.

Sweet Pea imagined Baby Doll up as her strength to help her sister escape from the mental ward.

The problem is... it's not setup strongly enough to get that across to the audience. The thin story is hidden behind irrelevant fantasy worlds and awesome sword moves.

I got to the point where I said, out loud, if Baby Doll does another cartwheel flip I'm gonna throw my drink at the screen.

I think it's fair to look for a deeper meaning when a film comes across as being nonsensical and plays with visual metaphors as this film seems to (although I'm talking as someone who still hasn't seen it). Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland has been continuously probed for its hidden meanings. I just think some people aren't finding much under the surface.

I think you hit it on the nail. It felt like it could have easily been something more under the surface without even trying. It was this play on the conscious mind being projected as a form of escapism. It could have easily been about so much, it could have made loads of sense if only there was a tiny bit of effort put into the story as a whole.

But Snyder didn't try, he just did whatever and figured people would just turn off their brains before watching it.

Also, we're only really scratching the surface, just what's right in front of us. Yet some people are acting like we're trying to write a 10 page essay on it.

He's working with David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan on his upcoming Superman movie. He should have held off on Sucker Punch until they could've taken a crack at the script. I'm sure it would have been 1000x better.

Such a disappointment, as it had such potential. It was like Zack Snyder took all the jokes\sarcasm\criticism -- about his overuse of CGI, slow-motion, stylized action, and music video-esque direction -- and took them as compliments. And then went out to make a film that enthusiastically encompassed all of them, all the time. Boring action, boring CGI, and even boring hot chicks (though decidedly the least boring aspect). Everything was so typical and expected, and played out exactly like you expect it to as you watch the film unfold.

That said, it was the best video game I have ever watched.

Yeah, honestly, it's offensive to a gamer like myself to think this even embodies video game or anime.

Battle LA came much closer to presenting the viewer with a video game experience, like HALO or Modern Warfare.

This was just outright boring. Only time I ever got interested was when one of them got hit or punched in the face in the fantasy world.

SPOILER

And the ridiculous plot point where Blue shoots the other girls? I'm glad this was a fantasy world, because it was utterly retarded.

Yeah, seriously guys! Just stop thinking about it. Stop trying to use your own brains and form your own opinions on something. Just listen to what shorty15 says and repeat it to your friends, because he's right and you're wrong.

Wow, someone piss in you Cheerios this morning?

I am just sick of the direction that Hollywood is going and this one film essentially encompasses everything that is wrong with movies today. Everyone keeps saying stuff like, "Well, ya, the film was void of story but at least the visuals were stunning!". Really? I thought the visuals were crap. There is nothing really impressive about an overabundance of cgi. Some of the shots looked cool in the trailer but you only saw them for a second and not in the context of the film itself. The fight sequences were composed of the usual shaky cam garbage. Don't even get me started about the robot fight. And then there is the closing shot which was 100% cg. For real? They could not find a bus and a road and a sunset in real life? They had to make that cg as well? That is just lazy. And that is the direction that movies are going. Why bother using real locations or sets when you can get a bunch of fx slaves to fabricate your shots?

Really Zack, you are going to have those potatoes hit the ground in slow motion too? Sucker Punch is essentially a parody of Snyder-style, a style that goes way way over substance. And I guess all you need to do for your film to be about female-empowerment is give a girl a gun. Yawn.

This film failed on every single level. The acting was dry but I chalk that up to the script (if you can even call it a script). The visuals were lazy and unimpressive. Just more of the usual cg garbage that has thoroughly saturated films today. The story made no sense whatsoever. But worst of all, the creators act like there are innate musings on female empowerment, objectification and metal freedom woven into the fabric of this film. I'm sorry but I doubt that Snyder thought past throwing a bunch of chicks on screen with guns and explosions. This film is about as deep as a Michael Bay creation and I would go as far as to say that it is way more misogynistic.

Im not trying to ruffle feathers but seriously, are these the kinds of film that we want Hollywood to keep making? I think not. If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. This film is nothing more than a fever dream fx orgy masquerading as a social critique.

I'm a gamer too, and this very much felt like a fantastical action-adventure game or even RPG, that masked the weak story with incredible settings and random adventures. There are more games than just the yearly military shooter you know. :P

I've played every single Final Fantasy game, derivative, etc. I've spent most of my childhoold playing RPG's, ACtion Adventure, etc. Have sat through many work hours in a Mall playing through Gameboy RPGs (Golden Sun, anyone?) and Zelda and only got into FPS within the last year. Can you tell me from which video game the train scene from Sucker Punch is spawned from?

You'd be hard pressed to tell me that this movie has anything, storywise, on any modern RPG (save FF13, which still has a better story) nor action adventure.

From someone who's spent years upon years in action adventure, and hundreds of hours waching anime... this is a poor excuse of a movie pandering to video game enthusiast, comic book geeks, and especially the anime it's ripped from.

That's nonsense, sorry. The opening sequence was beautiful and gripping and was masterfully shot, CGI and all. Too bad the rest of the film didn't live up to that. Also, while most of the action sequences were rather weak visually, the one sequence that felt like a war against the clocks-and-steam undead army was very impressive.

And it also seems like the most brilliant shots in the film completely escaped you, or you are purposefully choosing to forget. The single-shot that rotates around the girls in the dressing room as they are talking about Baby Doll having a plan and the fact that she saved the younger sister from the cook... it rotates INTO the mirror where everything has been perfectly reversed. Take note of the positions of the girls, and of the contents on their dressers... all completely reversed in the "mirror" world. Absolutely stunning sequence.

Completely agree, and I said as much in my first post above... quite silly, actually.

I didn't say it was a particularly GOOD video game... I said it was the best one I've ever watched. I've played hundreds better, as I'm sure you have. :D

I completely forgot about that. As a filmmaker I was wowed during that one shot.

Though I did notice at the first half of the scene that we were looking at the back of their double's heads as the movements were slightly off. Then obviously when they went 'through' some PAs ran and attached the real mirrors for the final position looking into the mirror. Aesthetically well done, but seems simple enough to execute... with a lot of set up and rehearsal...

Actually, I only gave about one-third-of-a-s..t about the visuals. The set up was all I needed. The rest was the come down, and it wasn't a bad one at that.

Your predisposed bias and forceful will to despise the movie is so blatantly, even hilariously obvious in your posts that it only makes it more amusing to read as you try to convince the 1-3 people on this forum who even liked the movie that they're idiots for doing so.

I liked the movie. Hell, I loved it. I honestly wish there was a way I could step off this film set for a couple hours to enjoy it again.

Everyone else hates the film. They think it's a perverted sex fantasy, or that it's boring, or that it's weak storytelling if storytelling at all.

And I don't have a problem with that. I prefer to enjoy it. I like to give filmmakers a chance to wow me, even if I have to look past some minor flaws to do so. Sucker Punch had minor flaws. You can and will say otherwise, and honestly I don't give a f..k.

The reason I got so tensed up about it earlier is because I'm passionate about films. I enjoy almost every film I watch (okay, well about 80%), because I love movies. Sucker Punch is a movie for people with an overactive imagination, like myself. People who cooked up the same s..t when they were kids. I don't see that as a bad thing.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and to express it here - without attacking others doing the same. Next person who takes it personal will enjoy a two-week hiatus from DVXUser.

Does anyone think that the fantasy worlds were not born from Babydoll, but Sweet Pea? Sweat Pea survives, so it's her story to tell. By doing so, the bus driver becomes her savior and she incorporates him into her action fantasies.

It's been a week since the film opened. At some point discussion of spoilers is inevitable.
