Speculation on the Canon 5DMark3

Since the 5DMark3 release should be coming soon what do you guys think Canon will actually do with the video mode? I know there has been a WISH list, but I'm wondering what you think will REALLY happen. Here's my list of reasonable possible improvements, that of course could be way off base.

1.The MPEG2 codec of the XF Series recording to CF cards
2. Some sort of tele/zoom mode that is hopefully alias/moire free.
3. Digic V helps to make possible a new method of getting to 1080P
4. 1080- 24P 30P 720- 24P 30P 60P
5. Clean 1080 HDMI signal
6. Better audio metering and level controls.
7. Some sort of gamma curves/cinema looks in the picture style menu.

Anyway...that's all I've got before I start really reaching...

I could live with any or all of those. Seems to be a good start. Too bad Canon doesn't have a forum with a production manager that communicates with it's members like Jan and Panisonic. Thats the coolest thing I have ever heard of. It almost seems like a no- brainer. But I honestly cant think of any other companies (that size) that do that. hats off to them for giving customers almost everything they ask for with in reason.

I agree with that completely...Watching the Af100 being built from the ground up with suggestions being noted by Jan was a pretty cool thing to follow, and I have to say Panasonic did an awesome job keeping that camera's price WAY below initial estimates.

4. Also needs 25p / 50p for the majority of the world'a population. No screw ups like Panasonic did with the GH2 please!

8. Zebras (selectable levels)
9. Crop marks with action safe zones
10. Focus assist with peeking

I doubt we'll get the MXF codec, but I'll be jumping for joy if we do! I know this isn't a wish list thread - but I'd really like them to put the focus distance on the LCD so that it's easier to rack focus between two known points.

some half decent output to..

.. a second box, that photographers dont have to pay for, with XLR in Timecode and all the bananas

After thinking about this a bit. I can say the most important feature would be the 4gig fix. It could turn it in to an event camera as well. But the 4gig min. makes it very hard to use it for anything other than narrative or pick up shots.

While I think all the things in the OP's post are do-able **** and don't forget 25/50p for most of the world **** , this is a stills camera remember, that's what DSLRs are made for. I personally will be very surprised if Canon give us anything more than what we already have, perhaps cleaned up a little.

But then I said the same about 24/25p from the 5DII, so who knows?

You know what would be really cool . . . a 100mbps I-Frame codec, if not AVC-I, then a Canon rip-off of it. Barry could tell us, but my gut says it would be less computationally intensive than any long-GOP codec, especially on involving b-frames, but then, what do I know?

Raw video? Don't know. If it's true raw, as in a 24/5 fps stream of raw photo's that's one humungous data rate. More likely (Or perhaps less unlikely) would be some kind of uncompressed video out of an HD-SDI port. But on a DSLR? Really?

Yeah..this is the rumor that caused me to start this thread, I just got to thinking - we would all LOVE for Canon to do something truly groundbreaking, but it is a stills camera first and foremost, so what will they actually improve upon. Sorry for forgetting about 25P on my initial post!
I also forgot to say I don't think there will be an articulating screen on the 5DMK3, I don't know why I just find it hard to see it - Don't want to upset the die hard Canon Pro Photographers...unless they're indicating that they want it.

Since Canon already have the technology to produce S-Raw, which is a reduced size raw file, I see no reason they can't give us a 1920x1080 raw file, given a fast enough CF card. We don't need all 21MP (or what ever the mk3 will be). Frankly, shooting 2K and 4K is beyond what I need right now, or am likely to need in the next few years. The only people who can make use of this is Hollywood style shoots for projection in large theatres. The ability to crop in post would be nice, but I'd happily settle for 1920x1080 raw, as long as the like of Adobe and Apple are quick off the blocks with a decoder.

If I can't have raw then give me GREAT downsizing of the image instead of line skipping / pixel binning, or at least a 100% pixel mode from the centre of the sensor. The rest would be icing.

I can't help but believe Canon will disappoint DSLR video shooters with their next Mark III, as it is a pro FF still camera with Video mode enabled, not the other way around...

However, if I were King of Canon, I see no reason why they can't offer 2 CAMERAS and lenses based on the same sensor:

Ex:
5D Mark III, optimized for still shooters with added video mode, and 24-70mm Still Zoom lens
5D Mark III Cine, optimized for cine use with pro i/o connections and Vari-Angle LCD, with Video Optimized 24-280mm Silent AF Video Lens

Who knows, all speculation and I am only King of My Side of the Bed...

I'm sorta in the market for a full frame (considering it , anyways) but I'm curious why everyone keeps saying the 5D mk iii is coming out shortly. Who says? where do you get this info? Since NAB is coming up I will wait to see what comes of that but, where is all this 5d mkiii speculation coming from? Does it come from the " Canon put out the T1, T2i, 60D, T3i, etc" so everyone assumes the full frame world is gonna follow the same line? Canon rumors website just seems like a bunch of wild *ss guesses. If they said the sun was gonna go down tonight I don't know if I'd believe em......

Has canon ever confirmed anything in regards to this cam? Just curious........

1920x1080 RAW?

That is a contradiction with a 21MP sensor. There is no way it can be raw if it is a fractional size of the sensor output.

All "raw" output is a form of compression in actuality. Even "raw" photo stills from these cameras have a compression scheme. (Otherwise when you opened them up they would weigh exactly the same as their file size when closed.) It's just where and when that compression happens that more or less determines it's quality. In video, if you do it through a codec, that is one way. If you do it through choosing only a certain number of photosites, averaging, pixel binning, or by line skipping that is another. If you do it by downscaling that is yet another way.

Of course, if you only sample the center of a sensor you could have "RAW", but that wouldn't be FF anymore would it?

Unless you have a sensor that is optimized for video, with the number of photosites limited to the quantity needed (actually slightly above and beyond) for the output size, there is always in one way or another a compression scheme going on.

So what we really need to know when a manufacturer offers a "raw" output, is what they mean by "raw".

RED offers "raw" for instance. Is it uncompressed? NO. Is it better than a lot of other codec's out there? Well, yes.

So if Canon does offer RAW, great. Now tell me more.

edit:
By the way, here is a brief description of sRAW as an example:
It needs to be added that 1/4 size sRAW does pixel binning of 4 neighboring pixels in Bayern pattern:
G B, R G, into a single pixel with (R, G, B) values. The effect is pretty similar to what Foveon or film-capture does; since the need for demosaicing disappears (i.e. you don’t need to interpolate for the missing color values), the resultant image becomes quite sharp. I’ve been finding the 2.5mp sRaw option on 10mp 40D to be extremely sharp and noise-free.“
http://www.chrisridley.co.uk/blogs/all-posts/sraw-files/

So, actually sRAW is just another name for pixel binning.

Nobody knows for sure...but the timeline for them would suggest a November release with an announcement sometime before that. It's just a highly anticipated camera, like the D7000 was. The current 5dMK2 is around 28 months into it's cycle...so the new one (by anyone's best guess) should be here fairly soon. Anyway, speculation is all good fun.

As your edit shows - it can be raw without having 21MP!

All "raw" output is a form of compression in actuality.

Of course it is. Everything in a ZIP file is compressed, but you don't lose any data. "Raw" and "compressed" are not synonymous.

Of course, if you only sample the center of a sensor you could have "RAW", but that wouldn't be FF anymore would it?

Correct, other than you have the centre part of a FF censor, so you are still getting the benefit of the photosite size etc. In addition, for those struggling with the shallow DOF you could use a wide angle lens with a useful effective crop and get access to a deeper depth of field. It's not for everyone, but then not everyone wants ultra shallow all the time either.

Getting the raw data from a selection of pixels (resulting in raw 1920x1080) should be no different than getting raw data from all 21MP. It's how it's handled that matters. Let's face it, Canon is not going to make a full frame 1920x1080 sensor. It's just not going to happen.
