Speculation on the Canon 5DMark3

As your edit shows - it can be raw without having 21MP!

My edit shows that sRAW is actually pixel binning.

Sensitivity increases, but resolution in fact decreases.
You are also losing 25% of the color data. Thus it is a form of compression.
The perceived increase in sharpness are the edges artifacting.
This is similar to why the 5D MII currently deepens 5'oclock shadow and creates false detail.

Maybe that's Canon's idea of RAW video, but it's not mine.

I'd be totally sold on a 5D III if I got 4:2:2. The rest is gravy. Optimistic, yes, but a lot more realistic than the RAW video rumors, so I'm keeping hope alive...

You will never get 60p from a full frame chip even Red cant do it

Derek

It has nothing to do with sensor size, it's number of pixels. A 4 megapixel medium format sensor would require less data throughput than an 18 megapixel 1/2.5" point and shoot sensor.

Red's currently delivering 14mp @ 96fps and 12mp @ 120fps, so...

MK iii maybe's at NAB

MK iii maybe's at NAB

I think we are going to get an answer on the canon 5d mk iii at NAB. It is very obvious that the mk ii surprised the video world. Canon is a smart company and will be fixing any of the problems they had with mk ii.

What we should be getting:
Cleaned up audio reading (no need for magic lantern
24P w/720
Vari rates
XLR plug
Better HDMI out
Gamma control screen

By doing this they will cause a lot of damage the competition. No one will be buying the bigger clunky cameras or 35mm adapters. Canon will have control of the video industry.

Does anyone know is the 1d's IV does Raw

I'm going to get it. I was inches away from buying the mk ii. I will wait and and get the better product. I don't think Canon expected to grab the video world the way they did.

Heres a few facts.
Its a stills cam
It will have higher resolution

Im sure they can come up with something new on the video but dont expect too much as it is still a stills camera marketed towards stills photographers.

Maybe a fullframe videocam can be expected... But not a stills cam.

I would expect Canon to give us a full announcement at Photokina (September) rather than NAB. Sorry guys, but given the current state of affairs in Japan and that this is a stills camera with a 3-3.5 year product cycle that would make the most sense.
On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised to hear a few hints from them at NAB or even something special in the videocam department. Otherwise, it's still a waiting game.

And sorry, but if I read one more person wittering on about XLR inputs on ANY DSLR I'll upchuck my grub.:Drogar-Mad(DBG):

Understand this IT IS A STILLS CAMERA. Sorry for the shouty caps but it has really been bugging me. You'll be more likely to see tits on a boar than XLRs on a DSLR

/end rant

Market Winner

Market Winner

Still camera or not. Canon got a taste of success in the video world. This will be designed for the video world more than you think.

Nah, I think we are looking at 4.2.2 with a slightly improved codec and a faster bit rate.
I would doubt that Canon needs to offer more than that to maintain it's market share and build upon it.
As a deeply conservative corporation, the trickle down will be from a dedicated videocam, not the other way around.

You know that Canon makes video cameras too... right? They intentionally limit their DSLRs because they need to save features like XLRs and uncompressed HDMI out for their pro video cameras... which admittedly suck right now.

Canon will not do anything to annoy the core market for the 5D. That market is photographers, despite what some video-centric people here think. And there are plenty of photographers who are activly hostile to video in DSLRs, and who, if they think they are being charged extra for something they don't want, or even hate are quite capable of jumping ship to another system, or even going back to film (A lot have never left film nor will while film is available).

So no, don't expect video-centric features on a 5DIII, clean video and a more robust codec are about the limit, and not because Canon want to protect their camcorder market, but because they are simply not appropriate for the DSLR market, and XLR inputs would be guaranteed to pi$$ of a vast majority to the extent of jumping system.

We may, possibly see a plug-in audio input block with XLR inputs and level controls but whether it will be for a 5D level camera or for 1D level I'm not sure, I think 1d is more likely.

So a few realistic expectations are in order here.

This is called Speculation on the Canon 5DMark3 not Negativity on concept ideas from users.

Daveswan is right on the topice but this offert to the video market is going onn everything the mark ii wasn't . There is also a news lens that will be introduced a NAB that is more user friendly for the film maker.

Exactly. Which is why it makes perfect sense for Canon to do what Panasonic did with the AF-100/101 and create a large sensor video camera based on the 5D that will blow the competition away. They have the power to do that.

Indeed they do, which is why I think any improvements to the 5D will be incremental rather than radical. Those looking for XLR inputs, audio level controls, waveform etc will have to wait for Canon's answer the the Sony / Panasonic offerings.
What I think we'll see is a new sensor with faster read / reset, a cleaner 1080p downconversion (Using a Digic V chip) and a more robust codec perhaps Canon's 50mbps 4:2:2 job.
It would be nice to see a sRaw output via thunderbolt to an external recorder, but if that ever does see light of day it will be in a camcorder rather than a DSLR.
