So I talked to the Canon rep at IFA in Berlin...

There was a rumour a while back about an xl style canon with an apc sensor. Its on canon rumours somewhere.

Edit:

Yup, but it has been quiet ever since...
And that´s at least different to new developements in the photo department, where rumors start pouring in about a month prior to a new release.
But that´s also of interest for a much bigger clientbase, compared to Canons video departement.

It just is the perfect time - let´s keep our fingers crossed!

I want to see Canon bring out a professional / prosumer camera with either a FF sensor, or an APC variant, in an ENG form factor. Enough of this hand-held crap! I want something I can just chuck on my shoulder, if need be, without having to add a whole bunch of other (usually heavy) components in order to turn it into the camera it should have been in the first place. Come on, Canon!

DD.

I kept the idea that the 5D Mark II has been a market test to them.

That actually makes a lot of sense. They release the 5D MKII, rediculous amounts of people complain, so much so they bust out the firmware they probably already had, then people complain about frame rates, voila 7d. Now they I am sure they are aware of these forums, and the amount of chatter in the video world going about the 7D...

Video camera time?

That's why I'm skipping the 7D, it's not ready yet. The next HD DSLR will most likely have most things we want and I'm going to buy that.

I've been thinking about Canon's next move and it seems to me they could really drop the hammer if they want to. Most of us just want the DSLR sensor packaged in a video camera form factor with the right controls. There's nothing hard or new about that--it's just mechanical design. The real question is does Canon want to take their business in this direction? They tend to be a conservative company so I use to think no way since this is a niche market with low volumes, but now it's beginning to look like they will. I agree they will go after the Scarlet market and will probably remain at 1080P.

Canon really does appear to be better positioned. Good grief, they make their own sensors and image processors! They enjoy huge economies of scale (unlike anyone else except maybe Sony) because these sensors are used in still photography. They probably make several hundred thousand of these chicklets. I'm surprised Canon hasn't registered the trademark "EOS Movie" since the future seems to be the EF mount. But they have started using the term HDSLR.

I just wonder what codec they will support and what video specific EF mount lenses they will make. Either way, it will be a lot more expensive than an HDSLR so the 7D will still serve a purpose.

I'm very interested to see what Canon AND Panasonic show at IBC. Also Arri, etc.
For sure I'll be checking it out through various sources. It would be funny if both Canon and RED show prototypes.

I can hear Jannard laughing already.

Its not the 7D what the Canon rep means. I think they are going to release a new fimware for 5D Mark II, which you can shot 24p finally.

No, I wasn´t asking about the 5/7D at all, I talked to the VIDEO rep, standing in front of the Canon XLH1.
I asked one of the photo reps about the 5D and she said an 5D 24/25p update wasn´t sceduled, but obviously comming soon...

So Canon rep told you that 24p is coming to 5D for sure but they dont know when ? Or he meant 7D as "24p update" ?

it will be based in cmos chip or ccd? i say this because y hate rolling shutter effect. or can be cmos with global shutter? i don´t know this is possible or not.

When there is a vacuum of information...rumour creeps in...i would just wait n see what happens. we dont know whether its an update to a camera or new camera or whatever...let alone a cmos or ccd chip camcorder.

You mean it's not a 70mm polymer plasma imaging sensor with 263 megapixel resolution in an XL-H1 body for $50 bucks?? Someone on the internet is lying to me?
