Tried out the 7D and have to say it´s a real nice cam. A real nice photocamera. No headphonejack, as most know by now, kills it anyway for me. Of course for music vids or a standard film workflow this may not be an issue at all...
Tried out the GH1. I´m sure i will see amazing stuff shot on it here, but this thing just doesn´t make me want to use it.
Tried out the D300s. Same as the 7D, really nice cam. But I´d still go for the Canon.
This all of course purely subjective.

But if this Canon rep didn´t just want to get rid of me, my hopes are up again.
If Canon delivers what I hope for, I´ll hopefully don´t have to make up my mind again between a photocamera with video or a HDcam with small chips...
We´ll see soon.
 
Yes Please cancel your 7D preorder so I can move up in line. :) Whatever will be announced by the video side of canon will likely be over $4k but more likely $6k or more.

I already said that the Canon rep maybe just wanted to get rid of me as fast as possible, because he was harrased all day by the same question.
Maybe this even is sth they are being tought, "always tell them to watch out for sth upcomming"...
I don´t know.

I´m scepticall myself, cause there hasn´t been much talk about the rumored highhopes-Canon lately. None to be precise.
Only good thing is: rumoring will be over pretty soon.
But my take is: show the prototype at IBC, deliver after NAB. (that´s a ryme!!!)
That`s how they did it with the XL-H1...

Generally a new Canon wouldn´t be very surprising, the timeframe fits production cycles and thanks to the 5D they are gaining A LOT of followers lately...
 
Yes Christian, I had the same information when I entered in touch with a Canon rep after the 7D surprise. Actually, as I had posted and they confirmed, there's 24p/25p on their DSLRs just 'cause there's something new on their video line to come.

LOL.

I wasn't trying to stir any rumor mill. Just saying, if Canon releases the camera I've been dreaming of for the past 2 years (and they are in the best position to do so right now), then I - like many others - will stop trying to adapt these DSLRs for production work and buy a real camera. You're already going to spend that much to outfit a DSLR to work properly anyway, and it still won't have proper monitoring for the director's camp.

IF the camera we're all hoping for is announced, then there is less reason to go for a 7D. Simple as that.

What? Seriously? But no rumors or information prior to an announcement in this day and age? Well, with two people reporting the same thing I'm curious now. Did they really say info in the next week?
 
I know nothing. Not even a clue about specs. Just an informal conversation about 24p/25p @ 7D -- a big surprise to me. I asked why?

He said, because we don't need to sell more XL-H1, XH-A1/G1, etc. There's something on the corner to come. When? IBC '09, I asked. Silence. Only vague considerations about the competitors aka RED. For sure, the manual controls was towards RED as Canon's advertising has shown to us. He laughed when I mentioned the Epic ref on their website on last June 1st.

A curious note, he was aware of Jon, former Canon now part of RED team.
 
As Barry reported, people are willing to accept all of the limits of these DSLR because of the results.. but ergonomics, lack of real monitoring, lack of real audio, lack of zebras or other such exposure controls are a real drag. Whomever comes to the table with all of the benefits of a cinematic film style image, with all of the requirements that video people want... well then it's going to be some big sales. I forgot the model number but that new Sony HD that has the interchangable lens is a real interesting cam, until you shoot with it. So heavy... ergonomics are crap, layout is crap, I just really hate the sony line of camcorders including the EX1. Horrible for anything handheld and I know some people don't shoot that, but tha'ts not my universe.

yes... would someone please give us what we are wanting.. a bit of this.. a bit of that.. and I'm not waiting for Red. Those guys are harbingers of a future that never ever comes and when it does, it gets pushed back and back and back. That's what happens when someone isn't under authority and just can do whatever... Personally the more I wait for that cam, the more I'm not interested.... but till then I'm happy with the 150.. .still shoot a nice image and didn't break the bank. At the end of 2010 I'm shooting my feature so I hope that something catches my eye and I can buy 3 of them.... Still wouldn't be as expensive as shooting film and I'd own the babies when it's done.
 
I keep thinking of the majority of videographers out there for whom APS-C sized sensor may mean quite a bit of adjustment in terms of running and gunning. I can see how 1/3-2/3" cameras really can benefit the majority of non dramatic shooters out there - we here are a definitely a niche. It all depends on how well autofocus is implemented, and I'm sure that will take more time.

I'm very interested to see what Canon AND Panasonic show at IBC. Also Arri, etc.
For sure I'll be checking it out through various sources. It would be funny if both Canon and RED show prototypes.
