So brightly in the dark - Lawrie Brew :P

I'll be able to announce something a teeny bit exciting about its exhibition in a few weeks! :) While most importantly I gained the experience of recieving useful feedback from almost every filmmaker i respect the most in this forum!

I have to say that I watched your film twice and honestly I got alot more from it the second time. The first time I really liked the cinematography and the fact that you stepped outside the box. I didn't understand the story as well, but the second time around I really got it. It was an excellent film and also got high marks from me. You should definitely be proud.

Just checked it out. I've only watched the finalists and this one, but yours was the one that intrigued me the most. The visuals and sound were the most creative and unique, and the coupling of the fable works really well. But the fable didn't pay off fully, not for me at least. We expect to see him get his comeuppance, but then we don't. I loved the Kubrickian nods. The editing was perfect. I just am a proponent of complete stories, and this didn't fully satisfy me. Still incredibly compelling, and very disappointing that it did not place in the finals.

Thanks Jason - yeah there were Kubrickian nods! Glad you spotted them! I'll pm you some extra points about the film - im fascinated by your view and thanks for the encouragement :)

Thanks Matt! The films been entered into a few fests (with a slight re-edit / tightening of shots, and a sentence cut out from the end monologue) shaving about 30 secs in all from the film.) It also magically got added to imdb which was a nice surprise just before i entered any fests?!

Fair enough! So I love Kubrick, (Paths of Glory, The Shining, Barry Lyndon!) I also admire Akira Kurosawa, Takeshi Miike and Ken Russell, there all among my favourites. Ken Russell is a particularly underrated director imo :)

yeah once you enter fests, it gets added to imdb which is so cool. how long did it take to show up on IMDB? just a matter of days?

Well a day before i entered fests! I mean lets face it we know IMDB is fairly inconsistent with how it adds films - had to add myself as an actual director though, and the cast!

Oooooh just a bit more info about the film for anyone interested. So Brightly in the Dark is the first of a series of celtic inspired modernist short films, based on a project manifesto called the Uabhas Mythos (which can be downloaded here) http://tinyurl.com/393lfa8

A number of directors and writers are working with me to realise the project, (theres a facebook group, or you can add me Lawrie Brewster for further help) and soon there will be a website.

The next film ill be shooting, is actually a Chris Keeaaaaton script - The Changeling Son, and for those of you who like my partner Sarah's music, heres an albeit rough recorded, but still beautiful/dark lullaby recorded for it.

Exciting! Go Lawrie. Thanks for all your insights and unique approach to film-making. Im glad that someone like you is tackliong these fests in a different way. It may not be everyones cup of tea, but in this case it was mine. I've shown your short to loads of people! I look forward to Uabhas Mythos!

PS I got an error trying to download the pdf! (avast said malware you cheeky thing!)

Hey there Darkline! Oh if your having trouble with the download ive added some jpgs with the info below! You can catch me on facebook (Lawrie Brewster) if you'd like to get involved - (as are other directors and writers interested in the subject matter)

Yep I get what your saying with me tackling these fests differently! I mean my experience with online voted fests is that they tend to reward more mainstream/genre/slick but conservative efforts while many inty fests with judges etc its the exact opposite.

So i just do my own thing really! The only time i really aimed intentionally to win a fest (an online one) was a Fox TV for new tv shows which we landed in the top 8 out of thousands my god lol, but when your hearts not in a particular form of storytelling why bother.
