C100: Show us your rig...

Heys Guys. ABout to make the switch from 5D3 to a c100.

Any idea if my zacuto DSLR baseplate and/or Zacuto z-finder would be in any way compatibly with the c100 body?

I'm pretty sure that the Z-finder isn't the right size for the C100 Mark I. Zacuto does make one for it as does LCDVF. Not sure about the C100 II as I don't have one.

With the C100 II - it's not as critical since the EVF is much better quality and has some degree of movement. The C100 II also has camera controls on the display so you wouldn't want to cover those up.

No to the baseplate and the Zacuto dslr z-finder but see my note above.

Anyone have pics of their C100 shoulder rig with a Zacuto VCT Baseplate with the c100?

I have the Tilta VCT baseplate for my incomplete shoulder rig but I'm thinking about switching. The rods are too far from the lens when I have it centered on the shoulder pad.

Somewhat crude tripod rig. This was for a local TV job.

- C100 Mk1 (with a Jupiter 135mm prime)
- LCDVF
- Atomos Ninja Star hooked up to a 2.5" hdd via CFast/SATA cable

I'll buy real Cfast cards soon I promise :) The 2.5" HDD solution worked well and I had lovely broadcast spec ProRes.

The LCDVF is really good if not a little expensive. The BM versions fits the C100 perfectly.

Hello Chiskon

I have the Tilta base plate and the problem is it raises the camera too high for FF wheels to work. But I work so fast and change lenses so much I operate without FF. I also have the grip relocator and made a counterweight of my battery on the back.

Nice rig, Ned. Couldn't you use a little assembly of parts to elevate a separate section of rods right where you want it to make a FF work? Personally, I am with you. For operating, I like focusing the lens myself better than using a FF anyway. I think FFs are only really needed when someone is pulling focus for you, but different strokes, it was the same on my old Arri SR2, I focused by hand because I rarely had an AC.

Balance really isn't great, but it does the job. Going to try a QR plate on the top of the shoulder pad to move it forward, off the rails (though that will make accessing the buttons harder). Got a V-Lock that I can use as counter-balance, but really don't like the added weight.

What is that face you have mounted on the Blade? Is that some kind of hood attachment? The way your rig is set up with the FF, you can't really lower your center of gravity with the Blade. I mount my Blade exactly where your FF is located, using an ultralight Camera Systems CNC aluminum setup that clamps onto the rods where your FF does. I don't use a FF. My run and gun lens is the 18-135 STM IS which is focus by wire so a FF is useless with that lens anyway. Your rig looks as front heavy as mine. I have an old Zacuto setup but the shoulder pad won't take the rods out the back of it to add a counterweight. Sometimes I mount a wireless receiver on top of the shoulder pad and it helps with counterbalance a bit. But a setup like Ned's above is probably balanced really nicely even though it is long as heck.

Ned, I like your handle and evf set up! My wooden uvf and alphatron combo are too short for me on the c100 when I have it centered over my shoulder. I'll reluctantly purchase the nato extension eventually.

I also decided to get the zacuto universal plate. I can center my c100 closer to my shoulder and for when I get a FF, the front rods can be raised.

I was looking at the GRID 5.0 and considering to buy one for my Blade. Why do you think it's crap?

Optics are really poor - visible chromatic aberration around the edges. Fit and finish is pretty trashy, and mine (and I'm not the only one) leaks a little bit of light. Build quality isn't stellar either - the unit as a whole is alright, but I had the rubber ring holding the neck strap in place snap without me even touching it. Emailed about it, and got absolutely no response. Finally, it's quite large.

That said, I did sell my Z-Finder and stuck with the GRID. I prefer screens to viewfinders in general, though.
