F55: Sensors and Image Quality (F5/F55 vs F23 vs Codex ActionCam vs HPX3700)

I don’t think it could be the same as the F35’s, as that was a striped CCD rather than a bayer-pattern CMOS. I also don’t remember Sony ever advertising that fact when the F65 was first released.

I can’t remember exactly what the older SR recording options were, I’m pretty sure the top quality version was 880Mbps (Compared to 440Mbps with the one in the F55/F5), but it’s possible that the 880Mbps was for 60fps (while the F55 tops out at 30p for SR recording).

It’s exceptionally good though, beefy bitrate and the 1080p downsampled from the 4k sensor is perfect.

Sony specifies 943 Mbps for 4096 x 2160 at 24fps for SR when they compared to X-OCN, if this is accurate:

And if I'm not mistaken but I think the for the F55 the 1080P for the cropped super 16 HD mode is still taken and downsampled from the 4k sensor overall as well right? Is that SR444 codec only available outside the crop mode or is it available for both iregardless of the crop?

The crop mode is a crop mode, so no way can it be from the full sensor downsampled, otherwise it would not crop.

The crop mode is great for news and docs type shooters getting extra reach out of their zoom lenses. It was a feature they forgot to put in the Fx9 in the beginning, and they finally added it to the Fx9 once it got requested again. I like to think my friend was single handily responsible for that feature request in the Fx9. haha. But that is the disconnect from manufacturers and users. Users have a different way of looking at products. We want to get a job done, and manufacturers want to sell things. it is amazing the disconnect that happens do to those different outlooks. I think that is the main reason that Arri is good, is that it is a camera based on user needs and not market needs. Although, I feel Sony does a pretty good job at listening to users in the professional field, the s35 transition seemed to get them all flustered for a bit before they found their footing.

FWIW, on Sharegrid, used F55's go from $12,000 to $25,000. Different packages, obviously, too.

Was looking at various cameras and videos and came across a random home video test: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lL9NuRNghe4 for a second it made me forget I was watching a camera’s test footage.

Was curious if anyone has examples of the best footage they’ve seen out of the sony F55 where you thought for a second dang that was pretty good or oh so this is what the F55 is capable of. I mean I’ve seen a lot of the movies and Netflix series that are shot on the f55 so I have an idea but does anyone have an example of a particular grade or style of F55 footage that you loved?

It had crop mode from FF to s35 from the start , so with a FF lens you still had a 1.5x "Digital extender " although Sony never call it that .. then came 5K crop which allowed alot of s35 lenses to be used , the CN7 is covered in 5k crop .. V3 will have a s16 crop added ..

The only reason I need the super 16 crop mode is to keep my B4 lenses relevant and useful, I mean I have the converter to adapt for the 3 chip optical prism to F55 pl mount hd crop/super 16 with minimal light loss. Question is besides for the price of the lenses is there any image benefit to using those old digiprime or B4 lenses from back 10 yrs ago to modern sensor cameras today? Image wise I mean. It’s strange but so far the best image I’ve seen out of any lens I own is from the SD 22x tv broadcast box lens and that’s not even technically HD so I was curious other thoughts on older b4 lenses on modern camera bodies vs new lenses and if there is any strong difference in the image quality in their favor?

On a side note I think I read the number once but forget but does anyone know what the image diagonal of the F55 crop mode is?
Was it around an 11mm diagonal or around 13-14mm?

If I’m thinking correctly a 2/3” single chip sensor image like an action cam is 12.1 or so diagonal so a b4 lens adaptor for the F55 crop mode should work for that F55 crop mode diagonal and any diagonal on any sensor size that is small than that super 16 crop as well but nothing bigger than that.

don’t the converters blow up the lens to s35?

there is also a crop on the F55 to give something like the s35 Canon 20-120 some extra reach.

but at this point, i’m not sure who what is saying where.

"the crop mode is great for news and docs type shooters getting extra reach out of their zoom lenses. Fx9 did have a crop mode from the start , thats my point , but from FF to s35 but still 1.5 X for ff lenses , s16 is coming ing V3 ..

This is the adaptor I have: https://www.adorama.com/sob4s16pl.h...ArrEAQYASABEgJaP_D_BwE&utm_source=adl-gbase-p

So it was in reference to the F55 but I also posted a video sample of the canon c70 as well as f55 footage. I mean this adaptor was built for the f55 center scan mode
But
Because it’s pl mount it could work on any super 16 sensor or 16mm size sensor , digital bolex, action can etc. i was just wondering how the center scan mode on the f55 is limited image and code wise vs using the f55 features without it.

There are also adaptors that adapt a b4 lens to super35 sensor and there is also one very very expensive adaptor that even adapts b4 lenses to full dram sensor but it’s like $6000 and I believe 2stops of light loss

oh, yes, i see what you saw. i did not clearly specify i meant the “s16” crop. There are few FF35 servo ENG lenses, and since i was talking about the benefits of the crop for the F55, i felt that the “s16 crop” frame size was implied. i apologize for not making that clearer.

very cool! i should pick one of those up. sometimes it is fun to shoot 360fps on the RED’s, but few lenses are wide enough and cheap enough, or fast enough! would be kind of a cool shot to go full speed on the servo zoom at 360fps that would turn into a 10min slow zoom slomo shot, haha. Maybe at a busy intersection? put big pipe organ music underneath and choirs and call it art.

Yes, a lot of ENG and Sports colleagues have those adapters. they are quite surprisingly good. 2stoos light loss on an f1.8 or whatever lens is still not too bad. but then you have a 22x’s super zoom than is handholdable, pleasingly soft, and recording very nice 4K. certainly not the setup for night shoots, but quite an unassumingly powerful option. as long as no one is filming charts in low light. being able to go from ultra wide to ultra telephoto is unreal these days.

but that adapter you have looks stellar too. i’m very interested. up to this point, i had only seen a lens adapter that primarily sells on ebay that made a more direct B4 mount adapter. so this PL version is a but more compelling to me at this time.

Here's some grabs from a recent film I shot on the F55, where I was pretty happy with the results, and these really had sod all done to them in the grade:

Grug those stills are fantastic. Really making me start o shift my mind on the F55, I love the color tones and the subtle lighting is really well done too. Def reminds me of Mad Men which I'm not mistaken won some emmy's cinematography wise because it was one of the tv shows to bring a film look and aesthetic to telvision but i could be mistaken
