Scarlet Announcement

It´s a merry-go-round.

In the moment I´m drooling for a FF35 Scarlet.

Looks like it has got all the bells and whistles I ever wanted.

Than, maybe next year, maybe in 5 years there comes Quantum Film which blows any MysteriumX sensor and even film out of the water, with higher resolution (who needs more than 4k anyway) but x-times the speed and stops than every senor on earth.

And than I will be drooling for that and hoping that I have a chance to upgrade my Scarlet with that.

I guess the drooling for the next bet thing never ends - heck I should go out and shoot something with what I got.

... While at the same time making me wonder how fast equipment bought now will depreciate in value by then.

Well, video production equipment is not art, or collectibles, yet. Just because something new comes along doesn't mean that what you got will stop working. However, you do have a point. Making purchasing decisions for video production gear is tricky, and has been for a while. I remember in late '94, early '95 a friend of mine, and frequent collaborator, dropped about $8gs on a super tricked out Hi-8mm analog video camera. It had the full nine yards, interchangeable lenses, pro-shoulder mount form factor, XLR inputs, mechanical filter wheel, ect. Then just a few short months latter the VX1000, et al, dropped and blew his sh*t out of the water. That happens. Of course, there was no DVXUSER back then, where he could have had a resource to check and see what is just over the horizon.

Sorry boys, you can look, but no touch.

What's the latest on Scarlet? I thought they were supposed to have an announcement about it at the end of May???

Well, they said Mid-May, last I heard. But I think that announcement about the impending announcement was made before Jim went on a health-related monthlong sabbatical, so perhaps that delayed it?

If I were to guess, I'd say maybe end of the year release for Scarlet. Though 2011 is possible. Late summer/fall is likely very optimistic. If I were planning on shooting with it, I wouldn't. Or start thinking about your big project for next summer (June 2011).

It will be released first to Red One users (for a month or..?), and possibly trickle out on pre-order, though they have said no to pre-orders this in the past. They are now taking pre-orders for Epic, though Epic has no release date, and this pre-order is only for users to replace their Red Ones.

Scarlet is currently behind the Epic in all release dates, and design, though development is concurrent. The good news about this is that as the kinks are worked out in Epic, Scarlet may reap some rewards from that.

To Red's credit any footage they have shown from Epic, and Scarlet, has been superb. I've been very critical of their hype machine and shifting dates, even on this very thread, but by all counts when they finally get Scarlet out, it will be a very nice camera. But who knows at what price comparison? By that, I mean cameras released next year by the competition now in development, though not yet announced. Its possible that Panny/Canon/Sony/JVC have cameras now in research or testing that will match, or top Scarlet when released. Who knows?

There have been so many iterations. Yes, there was a FF35 planned. But at this point in time it appears there will only be a 2/3" Scarlet. I can't even tell if it's going to be two versions, one with fixed lens, and one without. It seems also the lens specs has changed on Scarlet, at least to something better. And they have some slick new autofocus they are hinting at. Right now, there is only one Scarlet spec listed on their site, which dates to Nov 30. Here is the info and specs.

Meanwhile, the hype continues. In big letters on the Epic side it says "The wait is over EPIC is here". With a user quote about how amazing it is from none other than...Jim Jannard. So you can order one and have it delivered, right? Well, no. This is Red. The fine print lets us know that means you can pre-order the camera now, if you are a Red One owner. The site is out of date as well, with talk about the Tropicana party on April 14. The same "obsolescence obsolete" verbiage is there too.

there has been 2/3" fixed and interchangeable, an S35, and FF35 Scarlet brains announced.... all the talk about certain brains being cancelled is 100% pure speculation. No info has come from RED to indicate that. There was a thread where someone started a rumor about ff35 being cancelled or something, and then a couple of months later I start hearing people saying that RED cancelled FF35 Scarlet, etc, etc... the joy of hearsay and the internet rumor mill... All anyone outside of RED knows is that 2/3, S35, and FF35 flavors of Scarlet were announced. What actually ends up on the market... nobody knows

Correct. There ended up being a question and answer thread where Jarred answered some of main questions that folks had about Scarlet (except for any questions with "when" in them)... and stated that they are not quite at the point to give everyone the "when" announcement that they are wanting.

that thread is here for anyone who is interested:

He also stated today, that focus is fully on EPIC right now, now that the Tattoo program has begun, as without that, there will be no Scarlet... So, there isn't any more big news anticipated for Scarlet in the immediate future. The goal is to get EPIC out of beta and 100% ready for prime time before they release anything this time.... There new motto is "when it's ready" :) So, folks can just go back to hacking their gh1's or shooting with their 7d's and check back later if they care. :)

In terms of progress on the DSMC line... the real news is that Tattoo has begun, which means there are working EPIC camera's out in the wild being shot on and tested in a closed beta program. Everything else is dependent on the success of the tattoo program and how long it takes until they feel that EPIC is bug free and feature complete.

For folks who don't like keeping up with all the changes and such going on in RED's programs... do like Barry says, and just don't... RED does it different, and there is good and bad to come from it. When there is a camera out, or a real release date, I'm sure everyone will know it the moment the news drops. Everything else until then is just speculation.

I apologize, I thought that the FF35 was an Epic "Flavor". I have found the original announcement and see that the Scarlet FF35 "Brain" was announced, with "Monstro" sensor for an anticipated cost of $12,000.00, compared to $7,000.00 for the Scarlet S35 with "Mysterium-X" senor. Sorry.

Well it seems there's going to be a big delay with the Epic due to a bug (read RECON at reduser).
And Scarlet... apparently a major partner has fallen apart on them (foxconn?).
So probably won't see it until deep into 2011.

I'm not disappointed really, just sad for a company that got the ball rolling on large sensor digital cinema cameras. Some of you may gloat, but what's the point?

Lucky though that I didn't buy that mint cooke 9-50mm for $2K that I was going to use on a 2/3" Scarlet. It would have been just sitting around for a long time ;).

Regarding the Bug news.... it seems everyone is avoiding the elephant in the room and asking about the manufacturung problem for scarlet.

It seems like a HUGE problem and could take years to find a suitable replacement. That, coupled with the ongoing delays makes me wonder if Scarlet will ever exsist.

I hope i'm wrong. I have been waiting on a s35 and fixed for some time, cash ready.

Glad I have the 5DII now for the last 17 months to learn and make money with.

Back in the Spring of 09 RED said alot of manufactures had gone out of business, and needed to find others to work, and they got them within 6 months

6 to 12 months is typical if it's a relatively easy component. But it can affect cost. You don't get the best deals when they know everything about the situation. You want good cost? Let them know you are using manufacturer A for a component, and you can switch from manufacturer A to any of three alternatives within 20 days.

Like I said... I hope i'm wrong.

The R1 owners are fine, they can wait.... but the Scarlet market, for the most part, are the ones that will jump ship once an alternative comes out.

They need to ship Scarlet before the likes of the AF100, 5DIII, Sony s35, Drama, Ikon etc start to drop or just bury it and concentrate on the high end products.
