"Who Invented Erika Spencer?" - A mentatDUKE Production

Hey Kegan. Thanks for asking. I'm actually doing the final render and output now. Once that's done, I'll compress to Quicktime and release it to the wild. I'll make a DVD including all the content for the film (promos, trailer, blooper-reel, DV "Film Negative" comparison, etc) and host it via BitTorrent.

I plan on releasing the film this week.

Looking forward to your thoughts,
Layi

FINALLY! I've been waiting for this to get released. I'll post my comments shortly.

Hey mentatDUKE. Just watched your full cut of Who Invented Erika Spencer and I have to give you props man. I really enjoyed this one as well. Cinematography was well done and I really liked the casting. The scene with Demetrius and the washing dishes was great and the comic book guy was awesome too. Good choice of music and I laughed when the scene from My Sassy Girl came on. Oh, great job on the wardrobe too, especially Demetrius' shirts.

You really have a knack for making enjoyable and relatable comedies and I found myself laughing often during them. I'm a big comedy purist and this was better than a lot of the dreck that Hollywood has been calling comedies (i.e. Meet the Spartans) for the past couple of years. Great job man and I look forward to seeing more of your stuff. Peace.

Thanks for watching and an even bigger thanks for leaving feedback! Glad you enjoyed it.

Better than "Meet the Spartans"? I bet you say that to all the new-jacks.

Thanks again.

Alright man! It did exactly what I wasn't sure it would - it lived up to my expectations. The only critique I have is that some of the shots were a little shaky...the intentional ones were fine. The fade in the middle was a little too long for my liking, but I understand the length of the fade was there for a reason. It looked filmic, the acting was great and wow, is Erika Spencer ever gorgeous!

Very creative idea and I'm really glad I watched it. How long was it exactly? I didn't notice because the time flew.

Again, incredible...I don't like to sugar-coat my comments either, so if I say it was damn good, I mean it with every ounce of my being.

Congrats on a job well done,

Kegan

EDITED TO ADD: For those who dislike the M2...watching this completely changed whatever people may have said negatively about it. It worked well indoors and outdoors.

One last question - why did the beginning shots look interlaced? Was it not shot progressive?

I read her "Green Eggs and Ham". :)

This was awesome! I can't really say enough about it. There were some technical issues (interlacing in different spots of the movie and such) but the story was so captivating that it really didn't bother me much.

The actors in this were pretty damn good. I loved the entire ice cream headache scene from start to finish. Scott came off perfectly as well, what an ass.

The protagonist was very good and I loved the entire comic book mantra throughout. I also liked the way that you tied up all the different stories and relationships. Especially the one that involved the cowboy motorist. Well done!

The writing was excellent throughout and the music was of course awesome!

This one was captivating. I think most of these characters might be able to pull off some sort of series.

Excellent work!

Mike

Wow. Thanks for the great feedback. It means a lot and we appreciate it.

Kegan, I agree. I need to master my camera-work. Some of it was really undisciplined. Working on it...
Thanks for the kudos to the actors and i'm glad you dug Erika. When she walked into the casting call, I was like "Miss Teshmacher? Cancel all my other appointments..."

The film was 20 min and change in length. I shudder to think how hard a feature will be if making a 20 min short took us this long...

Glad you liked the M2. I'd love to be able to shoot something with all the adapters just to see what the difference really is though.

As for the interlaced video, the footage of his friends in Chuck E. Cheese playing games as he introduces them is meant to be handicam/home video footage. Maybe I could have made that come across better if I made those clips 4x3 instead of widescreen.

Micheal, thanks for the kudos. I hope the interlacing explanation above works for you (unless you're talking about something else).

I'm glad you like the ice cream headache scene. Appreciate the notes about the performances. The actors will be happy about the compliments. Thanks!

Great job. I never got bored and it didn't seem to drag out, so you did well in that respect. Lighting seemed very natural, and the camera work never distracted me.

Acting could have been a little bit more natural during the interview segments and the audio was a bit lacking (kinda tinny/echoey). Also, at 14:19 the music jumped, and the transition seemed unnatural, which shouldn't be too hard to fix. Those are my only complaints.

Congrats on making a very enjoyable film.

I watched this one last night. It kept me through the whole thing. I was surprised and had go back to see that I'd been watching it for 20 minutes.

Acting was good, especially your main character. He was very very good, tell him so. The whole thing flowed very well and that's what matters most to me.

Congrats.
