Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

Game of Thrones is what really sold the Alexa to me. Not to say I don't like the Epic as well, but honestly, both of these cameras are so far out of my price range I find it silly for me to even try and determine which one I think is better. IQ wise they are both better than anything I own. Size wise, I really never was a fan of the size of the Alexa. But then again, neither are some professionals who are working with Alexa to make a smaller version, (or so I have read).

I fully expect to be overwhelmed and underwhelmed tomorrow. Just like when the AF100 was announced. Just like when the FS100 was announced.

I expect a 4k ink jet printer :)

What I hope for:

New 7D or a DSLR that actually puts video first and pictures second, becoming a new type of camera (could be interesting).

Competitor to the FS100/AF100 that is at least on par with both.

And I am sure my hopes will be CRUSHED!!! :)

Teaser from Canon via email via DVinfo ...

"We are pleased to have you attend this historic Canon event on November 3, 2011. The exclusive unveiling and exhibit at Paramount Studios will showcase Canon's commitment to play a larger role in the film and television production community."

Cheers.

So some of the biggest hollywood production like avengers to name just one is being shot on an Alexa and so Canon is already dead.

Actually several shots of THE AVENGERS film trailer (and presumably some of the film as well) were shot on a Mark II):

There are thousands of those cameras out there - we'll be seeing footage from those cams for some time to come. More to the point, the Mark III will be embraced by shooters who like the DSLR form factor and/or have lots of Canon glass, as well as by TV shows, indie shooters, and even big budget flicks when it's the right tool for the job.

Redraw on the epic is just so much farther ahead than what Alexa does. Alexa is great for going to prores and straight to the old fcp7. Red is absolutely mindblowing when just editing natively on Premiere.

Image quality wise there is not that much difference except RED has more resolution. And I didn't really like the way Game of Thrones looked. Way too good looking and plain. People are still lighting for digital cameras the same way they light for film, except there is no grain to mask stuff. Same problem with Pirates of the Caribbean 4 that was shot on Red Epics. Too good looking, you can see all the sets extremely clearly and they are too fake. All the makeup is extremely evident, there is no grain anywhere and the old films that were shot on 35mm just look "better". Not technically better but aesthetically. You could grade the Alexa and Red very close to match a certain filmstock, but they don't seem to want to do that.

This is blatant mis-information.

The Dp specifically said there's like one or two shots in the trailer.

Actually, he said there was a couple of shots done on a 5D. And later he used the word some. So that would mean two, probably more. Not one though.

Opinions are like _______.

I thought Game of Thrones was simply gorgeous.

Agreed. I had no clue what it was shot on when I started watching it and went and looked it up because I couldn't believe how good it looked, I figured it was film. Boy did I figure wrong. When I see something good or bad when watching movies, or shows, I will go look them up to see why. For instance, on Battle LA there were some REALLY GRAINY shots in a section that did NOT look like film. Over an IMDB I saw Sony PMW-EX3 listed and figure that must be what I saw.

Something interesting to think about is if you think detail at 1080p exposes flaws (like skin blemishes, fake looking sets, make-up) I cannot imagine what 4K is going to do. I can see it now "Oh look, that one pore on that girls face is so dirty, ruined the movie for me, next!"

:)

A great make up person...

How is it misinformation? That that camera is still being used - even now - for big budget things (and specifically for the very thing used as an example) is amazing.

Although perhaps it will be used less after tomorrow.

I am worried for Canon. And if I'm not worried for Canon, then I am VERY EXCITED for all of us.
Here's why:

1. How about a KILLER cam with amazing low-light and crazy imaging for 15K!! Sorry Canon, ever heard of the F3?
2. How about a KILLER cam for around 5K, great imaging full vid cam functionality/bells and whistles!! Sorry Canon, ever heard of the AF100/FS100?
3. How about a KILLER cam for around 10K, incredible codec, great images, all the pro goods!! (Maybe even higher res than 1080) Sorry Canon, ever heard of Scarlet?
4. How about a TRUE cinema cam? 40K+ But IQ will be worth it!! Sorry Canon, ever heard of EPIC, ALEXA, Sony (8K), etc?
5. They already played their DSLR card. It says right on the card, "NOPE...not going to cut into our vid market by enabling clean HDMI out. Uh....OK, but you are aware that the truth is that most indie's will happily keep on shooting what they have and NOT buy anything new UNLESS they expand the IQ in one form or another at the low end. Love the new codec DIRECTION....need more info though. But that card has been played....so tomorrow.....what?

So tomorrow we get to see Canon's impression of:

F3? 12K
AF100/FS100? 5K
Scarlet? 10K
EPIC/ALEXA/F65? 40K+

I am micro-budget biased am I certain, but....I'd have taken a 5dMIII with 4:4:4 RGB or at least clean HDMI out with 4:4:4. Sadly, I think it will be Canon's best Sony impression. Too bad. We already have Sony....we need Canon to bring a different angle....(like the DSLR movement...a TOTALLY different angle). Oh well....time will tell...and lucky for us all, the clock is ticking down.

Good luck Canon!!!! Please don't let us down!!!! (Officially prepared to be let down...) lol

ps...An F3 with Canon's name on it = "EPIC FAIL!!!!" lol We already have the F3 (and it rocks BTW)...try something different.

I don't know if I would say that I am, "Worried for Canon", but I understand where you are coming from. With the large sensor video camera market already shaping up into prescribed niches, that so far seems to meeting the needs of current filmmakers, they really need to, "Hit the ball out of the park", to use a sports metaphor for today's events to be up to their hype. I still have high hopes, but I am not going to hold my breath.
