Official XHA1 25F and Premiere CS3/4 editing/expoting questions & answers thread!!

After the arrival of my new baby(XHA1) I need to know how to edit with it! Had a Sony PD150 before and that was straight forward with a Premiere project.
Here are some questions and please post questions & answers as Im quite sure we are all striving for the highest quality end product. We kind of need this in on its own thread like the Official preset thread that is very busy and great for solutions.

Here goes with a few that I seem perplexed with:

1) Ive downloaded the Canon F preset from Adobe and to my amazement it defaults 25F preset to 23.963 fps timeline..does anyone know why as I found this quite bizarre. Is the premiere 25P good enough for a 25F project?

2) I love shooting HDV 25F but have accumalated lots of HDV 50i footage. Im busy with a project and need to mix the footage(25F & 50i). Mostly footage that is shot in HDV 25 F would be used. Would I be correct in starting a 1080P project? I have done this and all looks good except for the 50i footage which looks...alright...I have tried the Premiere Fields 'always deinterlace" and this looks like shietzer! Any suggestions? I also here that CS4 now sorts these issues with footage automatically according to the export settings....any trueth here, as it doesnt have an deinterlace option on expot!?

3) Okay, the good ol export to DVD problem from an HDV edit...is it actually better to create another sequence in Premiere CS4 (DVD standard) and to drag the HDV edit onto this and then to resize before export?

4) If footage is shot in HDV 25F or 30F is it happy to be used in a SD timeline where editing camera movement can be created? Will the quality still be good enough on the export or would I have to use a capture codec such as Cineform?

Thank you.:Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

I have had a lot of a1 editing problems! Crashes, unexplained errors and long render times (esp. when I'm on a deadline)! I'm still looking to improve my workflow.

1. I made the mistake of not switching to Mac right away. I have a quad Q6600 PC with 8800 GT card in it running CS3. A decent Mac with FCP studio will cost about $6000.

2. I need an intermediary codec? I think so, but I'm not totally sure. I guess M2T files are not made for editing. Cineform has NeoScene for a little over $100--is that what I need? Is there a just-as-good shareware codec I should be using? Do I need to drop the $2000 for Prospect and get the "Speed Enhancements" for CS3? How much speedier is it? How much better will it look? Again, I don't know.

3. I've seen such killer output on Vimeo and other HD video sites using the XH A1, I know that the camera is capable of producing--what are the missing pieces to my puzzle?

I know how to work with the camera in Manual mode and get great results on tape, but when it moves to the computer and post, the quality takes a nosedive and render times shoot through the roof. Simple things like transitions and fades cannot play in real time.

I'm wasting way too much time on figuring this workflow stuff out (and making little headway), and far too little time being a creative filmmaker.

I'm frustrated.

Andreaz,

the Canon F presets for CS3 are needed when you're using 24/25 F footage. The Premier P setting doesn't play nice with the canon F formats. If you're shooting in 50/60 i you don't need to use the canon presets.

MarkInAz,

I edit on a PC with a quad core processor all the time and it works just find and at a good speed with canon A1 footage. You don't need an intermdiary codec. If you're shooting in 24/25F you do need to download the Canon Presets for Premier.

I know that rendering can be tricky on CS3. However, if you go to the Encoder and use Windows wmv format, I think you'll be pleased with the results. Make sure you have all of the other settings correct (aspect ratio, etc.).

Premier is not my favorite NLE but the workflow is straight forward. You just need to make sure you are familiar with all of the proper Priemier settings.

Where can i find the F preset for CS3? I have found only the F preset for CS2...
