Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

Dark Side of the Camera
Just stumbled over this here:

I picked up a little info about a possible new S35 camera from Canon. It could be a rumor but this sounded as legit as it gets. I am only putting this out there because we recently invested heavily in Sony cameras and wanted to throw this info out to our viewers. If you were thinking of spending more than 10K on a camera system then you may want to hang tough until late November. If you have a specific project in mind then please use the camera systems available now.

Here is as much as I know right now.

1.There are more than five of these cameras in the wild.

2. Canon Super 35 Sized CMOS Sensor. 4K Resolution with 10 or 12 Bit at 50Mbps.

3. There will be two options Canon EF and PL Mount.

4. This is a Professional Video Camera not a DSLR.

5. Price point around $15K US.

6. November 2011 announcement.

If this ends up being a rumor with no merit than I apologize for the trouble. I still plan to use the Sony FS100 for our documentary “The Board Of Education”. I don’t think that this camera will be available until early next year.

*Update*

I just found this on Canon Rumors. It pretty much confirms the basic info I got on the new Canon S35 Camera. So I’m not that crazy! Thanks.

That would be cool. I am not going to have $15K for a camera anytime soon, but this would make things very, very interesting. It if is true, Canon is entering into territory they have been before.

That rumor has been up on canonrumors for some time (and different iterations of it have been floating around for over a year now). Still its going to happen at some point, so maybe this time the rumors are more inline with the release date.

4K would be a surprise; I kind of thought Canon would be happy releasing a HD camera to begin with.

Scarlet Killer?

?
4K seems like a big jump, especially for Canon who usually lag behind everyone else in terms of introducing new technology. It would have seemed more likely that they would offer a 1080p video camera with a 7d size sensor (which is what the majority of their target audience seems to want at this stage), and leave 4k for the next stage. Not so?

i dont see why its so special if its canon.
also,4k 10 bit 4:2:2 @ 50mbps seems unrealistic. if panasonic has to boost up to 200mbps on 4k avcintra, long gop goes only up to 50mbps?
most of this rumor with canon going all out on a nonstandard 4k, isnt canon's M.O.
based on history, canon has never ever done anything innovative unless they stumble upon it accidentally. (5D mk II)

either canon releases somethign similar to fs100 which is more plausible, or we dont see jackshyt.

I´m with you, I just found that phrasing funny, cause it´so so true.

I could see Canon making a 4k sensor scaling to HD output with their 4:2:2 codec, much like the Alexa does.
That could be a sweet camera, especially with full electronic lens controls for Canon lenses.

I'm still waiting for that 3k for 3k camera. Forgotten the name of it. :cheesy: I'd settle for 2k for 2k.

Canon will undoubtingly release an HD camera before a 4k one and as always they will be last, and as always they will match features of their nearest competitors however offer a more "ergonimic" friendly cam.

It's gotta happen eventually, It seems the better half of the market is using large sensor cams at this point. So if they dont step up to the plate soon, their just handing 100% of future profits to to the other manufacturers which is crazy seeing is Canon was one of the first to get the shallow dof/interchangeable lens ball rolling (dslr's).

As said above, Canon is always late to the show, but when they arrive, they usually come with a decent bag of goods. I'm suprised how long it's taken them to enter the race to begin with. we'll see.

I wouldn't discard that 4K rumor so fast... Remember the 4K hair dryer? It was a year ago, and Canon actually showed it. What did it record back then? I think there's a remote possibility this is true. In my opinion, Canon wants first and foremost to sell it EOS system and PL Lenses, so with these cameras they would't have a problem to go all out. They don't have sony's upper market protection necessity with their sub 20K cameras. Of course, if you're into conspiracy theories, Canon wouldn't want to canibalize a fellow Japanese competitor's market share... But with Red eating deeply into the old "ecosystem", maybe all gloves are off...

Yes, Canon has a history of being last. But JVC has demonstrated that 4K technology is on the cusp of being practical for prosumer gear. If Canon has 4K technology -- and it's proven that it does (albeit in a 2/3-inch format) -- it would be foolish not to leapfrog HD in its first large-sensor video-camera offerings and go straight to 4K.

Yeah 4k is definitely going to be all over the place in 2012. The whole double stream (or quad in JVC) thing seems like such a bad idea. Doesn't take too much imagination to see the possibility for problems/accidents to occur. But, people will work around all kinds of weird workflow stuff for better images. Get ready for all sorts of epic "real" 4k vs. canon and jvc etc. "fake" 4k. Cycles seem to repeat. The thing is, canon needs to step up and unlock RAW for video, then it's really "game on!!!"
Also, my prediction is we will see 120 fps become as common as 60fps in 2012, sort of a baseline slo-mo standard

one more thing - thunderbolt is going to make our lives SO MUCH BETTER, have you guys seen all the new stuff coming? portability and power is the 2012 slogan for image captureand post

I also am interested to see guys like Vincent Laforet's reviews on the new canon cameras, he seems enthralled with epic's images and framerates and rightly so, it's going to be hard (i think) to get super excited about other stuff when you pretty much have the best camera ever made in terms of image quality and portability, these guys coming from stills really see the value in true resolution, 16-bit color, and RAW

c'mon other companies, lets get the hell away from your 8-bit world, its embarrassing.... ; )

Knowning Canon it will be a let down in some way, likely same quasi pixel-shift techology it has used in the past. 4k image but 900 lines of resolution :D

oh most definitely, but we may FINALLY get true 1080 from downsampling from "fake" 4k

wow, we already are putting canon down for the camera they haven't even released yet, just shows you how fed up everyone is with dslr handicaps
