Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

I think that if the scarlet don't have a F35 sensor, RED get slapped in the face by Canon. It really is exciting, and even more for RED an Canon than for the consumers.
It al depends on a few features. Price, Sensor, Codex, DR are the most inportant. We all know for sure that RED is still far ahead on codex, and will have 18 stops (!!!!!!!!). Canon has to give allot to beat that.
I think Canon will beat RED on sensor and price.

I really can't stop talking about 3 november, my girl forbid me to talk about camera's for a while :)
Don't know about that. There are lot of people on reduser that say 2/3 is exactly what they want and they will order the camera as soon as possible no matter what the specs are. What I was told: "It is the Imaging Philosophy behind the Red system that makes the pictures so good". And btw, those guys hate Canon.

I film freelance with the af100, FS100, 5D, 7D, 550D on more than 50 corporate films for a few production compagnies.
I already ask my 3 best clients what they think about hiring me with a camera with a better codex and higher DR, fps but with less depth of field. They won't accept less depth of field.
We have to wait for the REEL of the Scarlet before we can deside if we really miss the cinematic/dramatic look we need in the image the scarlet produce.

That's not true, everyone at reduser says that Alexa image looks like video. Everyone outside reduser says that Red looks videoish and Alexa looks closer to film than any other digital camera. I believe that guys at reduser knows better. They have bought EPIC and they are pro film makers. Those guys don't even waste time doing big budget projects. They shoot home videos because that's what they want to do. Only soccer moms shoot big budget stuff.

Alexa = digital video camera.
RED = Digital Cinema Camera Super System For Professionals.

That's just sillypants talk. Both look amazing in the right hands, and the people with "the right hands" usually don't get drawn in to such black and white statements. They are both awesome. Really.

SORRY! I mean the answer of Editman, is the best answer so far:

One of two things will happen tomorrow.
1.We will be surprised.
2.We will be disappointed.

Really? Don't you think your hyperbole is going a little too far?

I for one posted a comment (in the Red One discussion area no less) that used the Alexa footage in Game of Thrones as an argument for how close digital cinema is to matching film, and the only responses I got were agreeing.

Certainly the posts in Recon are sickeningly fanatical, but I don't read non-Red posts in there anyway since there's nothing worth reading.

Ok... I'm back (to this thread)! I suppose all behind this is mostly redundant... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I fully expect to be both surprised and disappointed.

Same here.

I suppose one of you will post the news as soon as it arrives. I will wake to good/bad/in-between news on this side on the 4th. Looking forward to discussing something that actually exists. "Prints 24pps man..."

I really like the Alexa image, to be honest. In fact - when I first saw Game of Thrones I put in at S35, and only found out at later about the Alexa.

Exactly.

The "Red magic" has arrived here too it seems. Lets try again: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?65479

I think I will get pm again soon that tells me to not talk about Red in negative way because they own this forum too.

That's a bit of an extreme statement. I don't know for sure if this camera is 4K or not--this is just a rumor. But even if it isn't, it's not the end of the world. This is a first generation product (for digital cinema) for them. Canon doesn't necessarily have to go all out on the first try. Maybe they have something more high-end cooking later.
That's exactly my point. Their production cycle seems to long, by the time they get to 4K -- assuming that tomorrow's announcements don't including 4K cameras -- they'll be an also-ran.

They're doing it wrong

RED vs. Alexa vs. Super 16

--- video by John Brawley
According to users there there's at least three things wrong with this video (100% real like all other quotes):

1. It's on vimeo so who cares. If you see that video from 4K projector and 60 foot screen (I hope that's right size we don't use feets in my country) you would see that Red is easily the best.
2. These kind of comprasions are useless because they are not made by real professionals.
3. Internet comprasions don't have any value. You have to make your own tests with professionals to see real results.

But you're picking just one parameter, resolution, to determine if they will be an also-ran. There are other things they can offer now that give better value in the current marketplace. The market itself consist of a range of capabilities, not just 4K.

We don't know what Canon's ambition is yet until tomorrow, but if they decide to go full throttle in digital cinema, they will eventually compete at the highest level. They just never jump out of the gate with a flagship product. They're conservative and prefer to perfect a technology before releasing it. They're like the tortoise instead of the hare.

We also know they're working on 4K cameras. They've demonstrated the 4K 2/3" hairdryer running at 60 fps. They've captured 1080p video from that 120 MP APS-H sensor and that wafer size sensor.

Alexa and Epic don't even look the same to my eyes. At all.

Alexa looks like film stock.

Epic looks like really good video.

There's no real comparison, only choice. At least to me.

So some of the biggest hollywood production like avengers to name just one is being shot on an Alexa and so Canon is already dead. What I see today in the video market, is the same that was prevalent in the photo world for a long time. For many resolution was the only factor, hey look at my 12 megapixel point and shoot!!! Now people realise that resolution is only one aspect of image quality and that there much more important things like DR to concentrate on now. A 2k 13+ Dr camera with extremely low rolling shutter and very very good low iso and high bitrate codec for about 10K would be groundbreaking.

Naw, we'll do it out here and up front. If you don't have anything constructive to talk about, and you're just using our forum to bash Red, the RedUser community, or Red users, then yeah, shut up and go away.

We aren't a forum for bashing any other forum. Find something useful to discuss instead please.
