Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

I don't know if I would say that I am, "Worried for Canon", but I understand where you are coming from. With the large sensor video camera market already shaping up into prescribed niches, that so far seem to meeting the needs of current filmmakers, they really need to, "Hit the ball out of the park", to use a sports metaphor for today's events to be up to their hype. I still have high hopes, but I am not going to hold my breath.

Ya. I hear you completely. I think you said it better. "Niches".

I hear a lot of reasonable folks saying the EXACT same thing: This better be good...but I'm not holding my breath.

Tick, tock, tick, tock, ....I'm glad I'm working hard on a new project. Watching the clock could get OLD....very FAST!

Cheers David! ...and good luck to us all!

I'm keeping my expectations low because Canon is historically conservative and they've probably only had about 3 years to design and test this camera.

But the current niches do have areas to improve. The F3 could use a better codec. The log recording could be built in without an upgrade. It needs a real broadcast viewfinder. The FS100 needs a built in ND filter and a better codec. Log recording or wider DR here would be great.

Also, Canon could focus on usability. They could design cine lenses with their ultrasonic motors and encoders for distance built in. Then build bluetooth right into the camera and you could pull focus wirelessly. Or they could adapt their AF technology in their high-end broadcast lenses to help pull focus. And the most persuasive of all: lower price!

Back at ya! What ever today brings, it really does boil down to the fact that NOW is the new golden age of independent film. New cameras thrown into the mix is very exciting, but at this point, it really is up to us all to buckle down and tell the stories we want to tell with the amazing tools that are available to us. I have a FS100 kitted out, with a set of Nikon primes, but more important, I just established a relationship with a producing partner in LA, who is an old friend, and a filmmaker with several features under his belt, with whom I have just agreed to work with to develop a script that I have that is almost 20 years old. What ever the events of today turn out to be, the real issue needs to be the death of excuses.... excuses not to go out and shoot the films you want to make.

Redraw on the epic is just so much farther ahead than what Alexa does. Alexa is great for going to prores and straight to the old fcp7. Red is absolutely mindblowing when just editing natively on Premiere.

Image quality wise there is not that much difference except RED has more resolution. And I didn't really like the way Game of Thrones looked. Way too good looking and plain. People are still lighting for digital cameras the same way they light for film, except there is no grain to mask stuff. Same problem with Pirates of the Caribbean 4 that was shot on Red Epics. Too good looking, you can see all the sets extremely clearly and they are too fake. All the makeup is extremely evident, there is no grain anywhere and the old films that were shot on 35mm just look "better". Not technically better but aesthetically. You could grade the Alexa and Red very close to match a certain filmstock, but they don't seem to want to do that.

It was shot with RED One wasn't it? And it looks more like hid def video than film (like pretty much all movies shot with RED). Unlike Avengers, 30 Minutes or Less etc that were shot with Alexa.

I would not hold my breath for lower prices, at all. Now it really does depend on what camera(s) they are looking to compete with, but don't expect price point to be the selling point.

And Game of Thrones looks just like Pirates 4. Too clean. But that is a LOOK and if the producers want that, they will get it. Do people even realise that movies go through extensive post-production and color grading? You can grade RED to look like Alexa and vice versa. It's not even that hard. So I don't really get the argument that Alexa supposedly looks better. I've edited both of their material and it's pretty much the same. Our grading guy has said that he prefers the redraw material to Alexa so I'm gonna trust him with it.

Too much hyperbole gets thrown around like "Alexa looks more filmic". No it doesn't. The F3 looks just as filmic especially with s-log. Red is as filmic as you make it. They all are.

No you can't grade the mto look like each other. That's why no movie shot with Red look as flimic as some movies shot with Alexa.

I think they both can look pretty filmic, perhaps the Alexa a little more, although not entirely like film yet.

Sorry if i missed this somewhere in the thread, but approximately when will details be announced?

Latest intel:

Is this what’s coming today?
Received some information about the new video camera that is being announced today in Hollywood.
Name: Canon EOS 300C
EF and PL Versions

Super35 Sensor

Both the FS100 and AF100 have plenty of shortcomings that could be addressed by Canon, so I don't feel sorry for them at all. The biggest shortcoming for me is that for my FS100 I cannot use all my Canon glass because neither Birger or RedRock have a mount for the FS100 yet. That's a HUGE issue, and let's face it, the cost of adding that adapter would not be necessary either.

Don't misunderstand, I love both the AF100 and FS100, and have owned both. But they are both far from *my* ideal camera. At a minimum for *me* if they released something to compete with both, what I'd hope for would be:

* small modular body, like FS100, but more modular (not have the LCD fixed to one position but be more Red like in that regard)
* 4:2:2 / 10-bit
* Focus 1:1, not just 2x like FS100 or non-existant in the AF100
* Waveforms like on the AF100
* ND filter built in like AF100
* Dual record capability, but on 2 SD or CF, not on special unit like FS100.
* S35. Performance on par with FS100 for low light, moire on AF100, but even faster rolling shutter

At a minimum even just the 4:2:2 / 10-bit would be a winner for them for a lot of people. Provided their sensor delivers, which is the only part that scares me.

But who knows, I guess we'll see what they have up their sleeve later today :)

I think, if it's base on the XF line, we'll see similar features. If it's super35 let's hope for a new low pixel/high DR/low noise/fast readout sensor.

You are a poor color grader if you can't grade them very close to each other.

What is the EXACT thing that makes you believe that Alexa is more "filmic". Is it more grain? More warm? What?

It probably will be the same codec as in the xf-series. Which is the 8-bit 4:2:2 50mbps mpeg2. Which looks great and compresses well. Though it is not 10-bit.

I think I could live with that. Price will really be the decider. If it had 10-bit out the SDI, at least I could get 10-bit when I needed it.
