Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

It probably will be the same codec as in the xf-series. Which is the 8-bit 4:2:2 50mbps mpeg2. Which looks great and compresses well. Though it is not 10-bit.

Yeah, but the xf series didn't advertise " Hollywood", Scorsese etc...;)

Hopefully it's a step ahead.

If this big stink from Canon is about 8 bit 1080p, then they released on the wrong day.

It should have been released Oct. 31st, not Nov. 3rd , so we can say:

"BOOOO!!!!!!"

You are a poor color grader if you can't grade them very close to each other.

What is the EXACT thing that makes you believe that Alexa is more "filmic". Is it more grain? More warm? What?

highlights. You can check camera tests, or an outdoor scene, alexa wins.preiod.

Epic has HDR-X which blows the Alexa out of the highlight race.

Let's see an example of HDRx in a fast action, busy scene then?

I'm sick of hearing about HDRx like it is usable for every shot.... It is a nice little tool that may help on some shots. Even Jim himself said to use it sparingly.

Sorry if i missed this somewhere in the thread, but approximately when will details be announced?

3.00 PDT according to Piolet.

I think that works out to about 12 midnight for me.

Ah well, I'll catch up tomorrow.

Dave

More DR for the start. Performs better in other areas too.. less noise, no digital artifacts etc

From what I've seen at work the Alexa has a more organic quality. From a VFX standpoint though, I think the RED wins because it has less noise/grain and more resolution. That said, isn't this thread about the new Canon camera? From Canonrumors.com today:

  • Name: Canon EOS 300C
  • EF and PL Versions
  • Dual CF Card Slots
  • Built in ND
  • Super35 Sensor
  • HDMI and HDSDI out
  • Hot shoe mounted monitor w/ 2 XLR ins
  • 1920 x 1080 resolution
  • Also is able to record out of SDI

I laugh when people claim a camera is filmic. What makes a film look like a film is more about aesthetics than technology most of the time. Not that there isn't some technically inferior products that just can't perform at all (Fisher Price PXL-2000 video camera :) ). You want a reality check, read what normal non-cinematographer, or color-correcting, or editing people say about a movie. I can tell you with the million+ views of our mini-series on YouTube (Modern War Gear Solid) that NO ONE has ever said to us "Wow, that looks like video" Ever. In fact, if people say anything, it's "Wow, this looks like a hollywood production, how did you guys afford to do this? It looks like a movie" and on and on. And what was that shot on? Entirely with the Canon 7D (two of them actually). Sure, I feel confident that there are many people here that would go look at it and pick it apart to death "That highlight on that window, it's so like video" but really, what matters to me is those millions of viewers on our channel, not a few pixel peepers on a forum. That's my reality check.

I've looked at the Tattoo video from Red and I love what the Epic delivers. I had to laugh as I was watching it because I got sucked into the story and forgot to be looking at the IQ of what was going on. As I mentioned earlier, the footage from the Alexa in Game of Thrones was awesome to me. But, how could I EVER really compare both cameras when I've seen so little from both in terms of actual productions? There are so many variables involved between the sensor and the video I watched, it's not even funny. Clearly there are some HUGE projects going on using the Epic. I have a lot of respect for Peter Jackson and I think his films look about as *filmic* as it gets, and he is using Epic on The Hobbit. I think that speaks for itself. I put the Alexa and Epic in the same class. As with the AF100/FS100 they both have strengths and weaknesses.

But even beyond that, how many times have you read countless reviews, watched in depth videos, downloaded footage, thinking you found the perfect camera only to be disappointed by some aspect of that camera, or the quality of the video? The only way I can really judge a camera is by using it, getting the footage out of it, and testing that footage. *I* need to see what the camera was shooting at. *I* need to evaluate where the camera works well, where it doesn't. NO test has ever come to the same conclusions I have and that's why I take people claiming some camera is the *winner* with a grain of salt. It might win for you, and that's a fair statement, but there are so many different characteristics and features of a camera that is important for some people. Had the AF100 been smaller than the FS100 for me, I'd probably have kept the AF100 instead. Size matters :) But for others, it doesn't.

No matter what Canon releases, this thread will delve into what everyone hates about whatever they release. They can't possibly win. If it's a small modular body, people will complain that it's too small, if it's a big body, just the opposite. If it's S35 the 5D people are going to complain it's not full frame. If it's not 4K people are gonna complain it cannot compete. If it is 4K people will complain about ingesting the footage, or having to covert it to something else. This list could go on and on and on. No camera is perfect for everyone, that is an impossible task because we all have opposing desires with certain features that are important to us.

From a VFX standpoint though, I think the RED wins because it has less noise/grain and more resolution.

The DOP of Anonymous Anna Foerster had never shot completely digital before.

So together with Academy Award Winner Volker Engel and his partner at Uncharted Territory, Mark Weigert she tested the picture quality of two digital cameras: The Alexa and the RED MX.

By the time the test was done, the EPIC was not yet available and the Alexa didn't have the ARRI RAW Recorder available yet.
So for the test they used the dual link SDI 4:4:4 signal from the Alexa which was fed into the CODEX recorder that internally records in JPEG-2000 at about a 1:4 compression rate.

After heavy testing, Foerster, Engel and Weigert choose the Alexa over the RED MX for several reasons:

1. The Alexa showed one stop more dynamic range.

2. At 800 ISO in low light conditions the RED MX tended to tint to green-ish and purple-ish while the Alexa stayed absolutely color-stable.

3. At 800 ISO there were also artifacts around highlight like candle flames with the RED MX. The Alexa didn't showed these problems.

4. There was slightly more noise in the dark parts of the picture with the RED MX.

5. When shooting green screen at ISO 800 the Alexa showed better results. Especially with details like hair. The RED MX tended to show red spillings around hairs here.
The testers thought that it had something to do with the lenses they used, so they tested a lot of different lenses on this subject only to find out that the RED MX seemed to be the source of the problem.
The Alexa again performed flawlessly on this topic.

That - anong other things - are the reasons why Anonymous was shot on Alexa.

I ain't saying the Alexa isn't up to snuff for VFX. Just saying in my experience with the footage, I've had an easier time compositing with RED footage than the Alexa. IMHO! I imagine this is one of the reasons Peter Jackson, Fincher and other heavy VFX filmmakers use it. Both cameras are great and competition is good.. again though, aren't we excited by these new Canon rumor details? I know I am.

Ok and yes we are. Can't wait.

have you ever been on a shooting with Epic? Have you ever seen HDRx footage? Have you ever graded HDRx footage?
If yes, and you still think HDRx blows Alexa, the next question:
Are you blind?
