Rolling shutter correction

The Story:

The Foundry showed some first developmentsteps at NAB, now've they released a Rolling shutter FIX .

I've dl'd it, generated a demo license, and now I'm doing some renders to examine it. Seems great so far.

Much of my stolen location work on Nikon primes suffers from annoying micro-jello, when I watch it frame by frame it is usually a wiggle wobbly mess... I'm really looking forward to the ability to heal those shots. Nothing like simulated global shutter to create that coveted hand-held 35mm look...

It's supposedly 500 dollars for a single machine license... but well worth it in my opinion.

I've already sort of 'broken' it as well, if you film large blurry areas panning wildly, you can get some twixtor-weird morphy looking artifacts. But for areas in focus and ripe with detail, it all seems fine so far...

Its for Nuke and Aftereffects

Seems like it does a lot better with the horizontal problems than the "jarring" vertical ones (sporadic motion from hand holding - like the final example in the the video you linked). Still, seems plausible that, in addition to careful planning and stabilization during production, this could really clean up those extraneous bits that would otherwise mar a good take.

The vertical bumps are from me hap-hazardly running about, attempting instigate RS nightmares..

For me, I just really want to clean up shots where I'm using a nikon prime in some stolen location, working handheld, where the shot is otherwise pretty good, but suffers from 'micro-jello'.
Now it hopefully will look more like true handheld 35mm with it's glorious global shutter...

Oh, remember also that it will actually leave in those lovely little micro-shakes that can make a handheld shot come alive sometimes.... the only thing it erases is the distortion caused by the shutter...

You could use this with FCP smoothcam as a final step to smooth out bumps from the De-Rolling Shuttered footage....

Damn ! That's good.

$500 ! That's bad.

Looks like they are aiming at the post production market and professional facility houses at $500 a seat.

I would buy that immediately if it was $200.

Go to the page and add it to the cart. Apparently they have a "rent for x days" option. Go that route and you're somewhere between a few cents and a few dollars.

Lee, you're rich from your patent on the d90 step-fix, c'mon, buy us all a licence for Christmas!

It's funny, I also tested the Foundry plugin on some d90 footage, and it had twice the lag time as the 5d. I had to crank the slider to the maximum... So now to get a decent d90 shot you need to do the LEE-FIX, - then - use the foundry plugin. Hmm, maybe it's time to sell my d90...

Wow, pretty sweet. They even mention the 5D Mark II. Have you tried it yet?
