Wheat Fields and Yellow Flowers

So this is officially my second shoot with the A1 and Brevis.

DOWNLOAD - 720P (100MB)

I'm using Nikon primes in this footage and none of it has been corrected for color or contrast. The two lenses, in particular, are 50mm F1.4 and 105mm F2.5 Macro.

I'm still getting some chromatic aberration on the edges of the 50mm but edge to edge sharpness is great.

One thing I've noted is that it's far better to keep the 35mm lenses half a stop from fully open or fully open while leaving the A1 around F6.2 or so. Using the built-in A1 ND is also completely functional and doesn't seem to diminish from image quality. All of this footage was taken using 1/6th ND from the A1.

If you want good shadow detail, you really really need strong ND, particularly if you prefer shallow depth and therefore need the primes wide open. I am still overexposing a bit, but I think within my next couple shoots, I'll be more comfortable stopping down without fears of underexposing.

(Thanks to my girlfriend for being cooperative and accommodating my silly "directions" while she stood in the middle of these compositions. :D)

Looks great! Thanks for sharing it. Do you happen to have a picture of your full rig with the brevis attached?

Watched it. It looks good, even though it's overexposed. I think the chromatic aberration might be less noticable if you go to a stronger ND setting. Definitely try and err on the side of slightly underexposing next time. Great location. I would go back for a second go and nail the exposure this time.

Mirezzi the sharpness looks pretty spot on (not 100% possible to tell from the reduced image size), but still, thats the hardest part to overcome. Of course depending on your desired look, Id boost the colours in the preset a bit more.

dling now.

Nice stills, and good choice of a subject. :)

Thanks. She's mortified. I was browsing this thread last night and caught a horrified expression over my shoulder...she's modest but receptive to flattery. Quite the anomaly, I realize.

It turns out it's not CA, but rather the A1. Dennis did a test at Cinevate where he removed everything but the achromat and focused on the black metal Brevis mount and you could see a purple nasty to the left side. It's particularly noticeable on the edges and with certain lenses, but ultimately it's the A1. I do need a stronger ND, but I haven't received my Matte box yet, so I'm going with the built-in A1 ND, at 1/6, which seems to work well.

I have yet to have a day where I go out and fully test things with a rich variety of settings. Once again, I didn't even white balance this footage. I was on my way back from a picnic and rushing through a few setups with my very patient subject. :D I really do want to go back though, that location was gorgeous, but it's around 500 miles from where I live. I'm fortunate to live in a beautiful place though, so finding lovely landscapes is a matter of a few minute drive.

If anybody has any interest, I'll upload full res grabs and a short 1080p clip. There were virtually only a couple moments where my focus was off and most of that had to do with squinting into my Marshall without a hood. I bought one of these so that should help when it arrives.

I figured a lot of people would comment on the colors and I'm one of the people who prefer that the A1 gives me a flatter, neutral color scale to work with in post. That does not mean I like my final product to look flat and neutral; I simply mean I prefer to use AE to color correct. I don't want my camera to do this.

I do use Steven's preset, but I use it with flat color. I might tweak that just a titch, but I'd rather start with a flatter image than try de-saturating. I should get my matte box this week, then it's time to buy a couple more lenses and some filters.

Thanks for the feedback, folks.
