This.
I don't think I've heard anyone ever call the DSLR's image quality truly comparable to the RED or Alexa, I think the main point is that it's still really good. And for some projects, not all, it's perfectly good enough - not just as a compromise - but in the end, shooting on a higher end camera may not deliver significantly better results for the cost.
It will depend on the project, obviously, but I don't think calling anything shot on DSLR's as not good enough is fair. The image quality is great for a lot of purposes, and that's what matters.
Exactly. Whatever he or anyone else says isn't going to change the reality that DP's are shooting mucho projects with these cameras (yes, over film and over Red and over everything else) - because - "... it's perfectly good enough - not just as a compromise..."
Debating about it isn't going to change that. Will that ever change? Who cares?
.
It's being used in "mucho projects" not only as a result of it being a capable tool in capable hands, but b/c those capable hands are choosing the appropriate tool for for a given task. Each "task" will yield different answers. Cameras like the 7D are incredibly appropriate for some situations, and also incredibly capable... That's never been an issue in contention by any reasonable person.
I don't see how that conclusion could be drawn from this video in the first place...
Everything has compromises... along every step of the creative process.
And yeah, I've been as excited about that new 21 ounce straight-claw hammer with hickory handle as the next guy, but it's better if I don't bash people over the head with it to convince them of its virtues.
Yeah he did a good job. This is not the first time he’s interviewed Mr. Charters. But this time around he seemed more comfortable and asked the right questions.great interview ! the guy who's doing the interview is pretty good..... BBC good! .
Great find, man. Thanks for posting it. Interesting, Hurlbut mentioned that "men of Valor" was budgeted at 88 million but because of the 5D platform, they turned it in for 11 million. That's the power of this platform. It turns out a filmic image and the ability to shoot a sequence that would have taken eight days with 35mm film cameras in one day with the 5D. This camera speaks the language that any Hollywood producer understands.
This is a must see. There's part one and two totaling over 40 minutes of info from professionals that have the most extensive experience with this camera in the trenches.

I'm not sure why a 40 minute interview with DP Shane Hurlbut ASC (The DP that has the most experience with the 5D) wasn't made a sticky since this little 5min? interview with Rodney Charters was. I assume the mods missed it but here it is.
Thanks for the linkage and the kind words. Interesting...the next installment of our FreshDV Conversations with Filmmakers series is from an 1.5hr sit down interview with Charters. Look for that in a few weeks.
This guy is a Canon salesman in my book.
I disagree very strongly with that statement. If you spend just a few minutes chatting about DSLRs with Rodney, it's easy to see that he understands the technology for what it is...warts and all.

I don't understand how someone can think so highly of a Canon dSLR and disregard the top of the line Sony in that fashion.
