Red Scarlet S35

As a Japanese-American, this is insulting. Using the earthquake in Japan as an excuse to not release even details about your camera? Seriously? Is this a joke? They're based in America!
Yet the companies in Japan that were truly affected by the disaster - Sony, Canon, etc. - had their regular displays and new camera introductions. They're soldiering on, yet RED scurries away?
Using a disaster in another country, in which thousands died, as an excuse to hide your products is a cowardly act.

Are you serious? Japan is one of the biggest suppliers of electronic components around the world. Tons of non-Japanese companies use components manufactured in Japan.

And I don't know what you mean by scurrying away. They had both Scarlet and Epics at NAB working just fine. Most companies don't release detailed specs until they're about to ship. Red is being no different here.

I was responding to someone saying RED was a no-show. If they were there, then my rant is kinda meaningless. I wasn't there, so i'm going on what I read here.
True, electronics do come from Japan, and all the other manufacturers are going to delay their shipments of new equipment.
So, if RED does delay their cameras because they do get crucial components from Japan, then I apologize.

Fair enough, your reaction makes sense if Red had been completely absent. :)

I don't believe RED or Jim Jannard acted out of bad faith on anything. They probably believed, with hubris, that their small company could actually release those amazing Scarlet products oh so many years ago. I believed them too! But they've learned how tough it is along the way. And I've learned that you've got to take all their hyperbole with a lot of salt. They weren't trying to sell snake oil. They're guilty of being dreamers and zealots and that's like a lot of people in the movie industry. I believe it when Jim says their production is held back because of the tragedies in Japan. Lots of parts needed at where I work are on back order or not available at the current time. It's sad to see good concepts will fall by the way side due to the progression of time and technology. The cinema 2/3" interchangeable Scarlet is probably just vaporware at this point, since nobody at RED wants to talk about it. Oh well. It's just a camera.

And I've learned that you've got to take all their hyperbole with a lot of salt.

What hyperbole? Have you not seen what Epic can do? Go watch Curl Curl which was shot in 5K @ 120fps, or download Jarred's RAW fashion shoot stills that with better dynamic range (and that's without HDRx mode) and tonality than a medium format back.

I'm as annoyed as anyone that the Red models I can actually afford aren't here yet, but let's not deny the magnitude of what they HAVE achieved.

It is hyperbole though.... even the Epic-X stage 2 customers do not know what will be included or even what the package price is.

I've got no problem with RED... i've used their camera on many occasions and, if they get their production to a professional level, I will buy an Epic-S.... but if they use hype to attract people, they have to take the consequences if things don't go to plan. The have often mocked other companies for behaving in a certain way, including how they communicate, but they are now starting to understand why these companies do what they do, and do it well.

Not sure how that makes their performance claims hyperbole, but I do agree it's a problem, as is the whole ridiculous "stage" program in general.

They have had Scarlet and Epics working for months. Ted has been travelling all over the world with the working Scarlet for a year or so, but the final specs of Scarlet and EPIC-S aren't released and weren't released at NAB like RED promised.

He also went on to say that EPIC-S specs would be “locked down by NAB.”

I believe the answer to that comes in the Japan segment of the highlighted quote. Go to red user and see for yourself it's all explained by jim himself...

"While we thought that RED Dragon was pretty significant news (obsolescence still obsolete) and the new "Tattoo" movie was worth the trip, I will say that we held back one big announcement due to circumstances beyond our control.

The situation in Japan has caused problems for us, current and future, even though the part count is very low for any one of them. Our announcements, from now on, will only be about products that are ready to ship. The RED Dragon program is the last forward looking announcement we will make...

Today we showed Matt's full line of accessories, the new iPad Mission Control, working Scarlet 8x, many post options for RED footage and a great new short film called "Tattoo". It was a great day for us and we got to meet a ton of customers and old friends.

Everything changes. From now on.. So will our announcements.

Jim"

To me that explains why there was no specs released, the camera's are not ready for release they have decided to not tip their hands any more so that makes sense. As was said before there is no one more excited about what they are doing than red and they may get a bit ahead of themselves at times but they are (close to) the first to admit it and apologize for it but it's not like they don't warn us.

Though that's just how I see it I can understand people being frustrated or tired of the ride, or annoyed by the effect it has on some people. Frustrating all around, though it's under different circumstances this time so maybe we should put things in perspective of what really matters in this world, recording life is great but living it is far better. (not saying anyone is saying otherwise, just felt like saying it)

have a good one!

RED will announce everything about Scarlet on novemver 3rd including shipping dates to counter Canon's Hollywood announcement: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?63672-Scarlet-(and-shipping)-announcement-Nov.-3rd...

I don't really get how all the people in that thread says "time to sell the 7D while it's still worth something". Really? I thought 7D was superb stills camera, with a video feature. Scarlet will also cost a lot more and has inferior sensor size. I would rather shoot with 7D/60D and its crappy codec than Scarlet with its small sensor and fixed lens.

lfmao. if the scarlet was real and i was given a choice to shoot between the 7D/60D and scarlet, id choose scarlet.

Well if you could choose for free, then yes depending on what kind of work you do (Scralet is good for news and documentry work and thats what most people are buying it for), but I would never pay 10k for Scarlet (price will be around that after you buy SSD storages, updates for PC etc) when you get camera like 60D under 1k.

and don't forget, November 3rd not only Red will make big announcement, I expect from Canon something with the mind blowing specs in the near future too

I need to make money from this camera if I get it. I hope I do from my films, but I need a more sure fired way to make money from this. How should I go about this? I know it can be done, but where should I begin?
:)

Where to begin?
Begin by earning money with the T2i you already have!
Once you have earned enough, and your client base requires a camera upgrade then purchase the needed gear.
FYI just because you own a Red Scarlet, an Arri Alexa, or insert big ooh aha camera name here, does not insure clients, income, or even a good looking product. That all comes from You, not the camera.

Good Luck!

Dave
