Red Scarlet footage anyone?

Soon there will be no point in comparing to film because people will forget what filmed looked like. :lipsrseal

True dat.

Watch Ghost Dog way of the Samurai.

Shot in 1999. What looks like, no DI, chemical process and finish. Looks like it was shot in "1981". Its beautiful. Grain, low contrast, soft subtle highlights.

The punchy deep black, saturated color look is a recent innovation. The DI meant that colorists could make the film look like it never could chemically.

There is no good better best any more.... it just doensnt work that way. F3, Epic, Alexa, C300, FS100, Af100, 35mm Film.... its all much closer together than further apart.

Been reading about the play back of Red files and edit-ability. Especially with C300 using 50mb/s, and the argument of production speed, but is it true? For big budgets, I do not believe there is a speed barrier, but for smaller projects and more mobile light crews, it is most definitely true, but to what degree?

"I'm not sure exactly what you need. . . I mean really need. . . but we are editing our second feature using PP CS5.5 using a THREE YEAR OLD Macbook Pro using daisy-chained Firewire 800 drives. And it works! I get real-time playback at 1/16th resolution, which is all we need for editing, and I can output pretty much anything using PP.

Now, we do not do our own color work, so that might be an issue with you, but for strictly editing, you'll be fine with pretty much anything. PP CS5.5 is an amazing program!

"For conclusion of this first part in series, if you have set finances aside for a new Mac and still run 2-3 year old Mac Pro, the ideal choice to spend the $$$ will not be a new Mac Pro, rather opt to spend only $749 for NVIDIA's Quadro 4000 for Mac and a RedRocket Card(if 1080p resolution is your primary thing, you don't need a Rocket card."

"Just built a new computer the other day (PC) i7 970 6 core with a GTX 580 3gb. Today i was editing 4.5k .r3d's right inside Premiere cs5 at half res. The mercury engine is absolutely amazing. I would give that a try before trying to transcode if its possible. I was able to place a rgb curve, digital scale to 180%, crossfade, plus a blending mode on top of another .r3d without having to ram preview. It just played right through it like I didn't do anything to it. I'm just blown away by the power and how well it utilizes the power. While just playing in the timeline my computer was running at 80 - 100% cpu (all 12 threads) and 25 - 35% of my gpu."

Well, that is all I googled for now. Maybe I'll update in a bit. Bottom line is: Editing on the go is possible. But not as headache free as TV spec codecs. Add to that longer export times, and it could be the difference of delivering on time, or delivering a few hours late. Red is not for ENG, and storage could be a problem for low budget docs, but I do not see it being a significantly slower workflow to any other.

Edit in realtime with scaled down images, but master select clips fom edit to finalize:
"We have an even cheaper approach: it's called edit in PPro, send EDL to Resolve - you're done - no transcoding needed except of chosen segments in edit itself. Has benefit of staying in raw until the end."

haha, is he really color correcting with sunglasses on?

That was the other thing, he is color correcting with purple tinted glasses! (I give him a pass because he is matching footage, and may only be doing so for a rough edit, or for demonstrating to the camera)

Hey guys! I read through some of the comments.. I think you will begin seeing lots of footage soon..so don't worry.
I think RED right now is focused on producing and shipping cameras as fast as they can to meet deman..rather than shooting DEMOs. Keep in mind that the Scarlet camera specs were finalized 3 days before November 3rd.
With specs constantly changing, it would be pointless to shoot a ton of material and have the specs change last minute.

I'm not the only one with the Scarlet X - http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?68210-Thanks-RED-for-our-early-Xmas-Gift!

I know it sounds silly that I have only managed to upload a minute and half of footage... I seriously barely had enough time to even go out to shoot any of that stuff. I shot the cityscape stuff right before jumping on the plane..and almost missed the flight hehe. Reality is, I am managing 4 projects simultaneously right now.. and I think others are in the same boat. If Scarlet was my only camera and had more time to shoot better stuff, I totally would for you guys. =)

That being said I am currently working on a full length review of my experience with the Scarlet-X coming by the end of this week. I will be sharing r3ds, stills, new footage from a feature film we are shooting. Possibly the world's first Scarlet Feature Film.

DIT's role on set is to transfer and backup the raw footage and do quick one light dailies for review. No grading choices are baked in at this point, all grading is done in post from the original raw footage. He may grade and create proxies for offline editing depending on workflow, but these are not used for final grading.

Welcome to the forum! Thanks for taking the time to review your new camera for people, especially being as busy as you are.

I would be nice to see all modes (frame rates and res) shown. Well all know that it can do 24p 4K. Lets see the rest of it being 60fps 2k, 48 fps 3k, and yes the 120 fps 1k (I've heard there is problems with the 120 fps 1k).

I forget where I read it, but someone stated that it wasn't functioning as of yet. But, if someone would ACTUALLY show that it is, then we would know. Although, I think the function is worthless anyway.

the more you hate the scarlet, the more i want it :p
