Does Vegas 8 have it's own version of ProRes 422?

Hi everyone

I noticed Final Cut Studio has ProRes 422 in addition to it's many new features.

Is Vegas 8 able to achieve what ProRes 422 can with Apple? Or, at least does Vegas 8 have the capability to match what appears to be Apple's new ace in the hole: ProRes 422?

David

Vegas does not it's own proprietary codec like Apple or Avid. However, it can use good codecs from a number of different vendors.

FCP uses quicktime for everything and you have to convert to quicktime to edit.

Vegas doesn't have it's own intermediate codec like Prores, but there is DVFilm Raylight AVI, Cineform and/or Avid's DnxHD. DVCPRO HD is a good codec too.

Best,
Andy

I know people used to use Cineform to allow slow computers (P4 2.0 GHZ) to edit HDV. Is there a need for it now days? Just curious. I hear AVC HD codec is hard on the CPU.

What is it about ProRes 422 that you want to use?
I was just wanting to know if Vegas 8 has the same capability to have encoding similar to ProRes 422 if someone wants to use a high-end camera through Vegas (without requiring expensive 3rd party stuff).

Your best of to leave the camera codec in it's native format unless your computers CPU is to slow. HDV used to bog down the older P4 computers. The ProRess is very clean but it will still alter the original footage. I admit you can edit much faster using the ProRes and for CC it might be better than HDV or AVCHD.

Yes, it does. Vegas can accept and edit Uncompressed 10-bit HD (doesn't get much better than that), ProRes, DNxHD, Cineform RAW, and a few other popular formats.

Sadly, it will not read or write DPX files, or R3D files. But then I don't believe FCP does either.

Uncompressed is free as well as Avid's DXNhd, but uncompressed won't run in real time unless you have a super computer. I've never used dxnhd before, but have heard good things.

Basic question, I'm sure, but I'm not sure how to find the answer ...

Have a load of QuickTime MOV files, format: Apple ProRes 422 - Vegas 8 won't show me the video, but I get audio.

What do I do to rectify this?

Wanted to update this since it's been a while. Vegas 9.x will now read and write DPX, EXR, and R3D files.

So, in order for me to manipulate the ProRes 422 MOV files in Vegas, I'll need to upgrade to 9.x?
