Red Scarlet Announcement Info

Why shoot 4K when everyone sees your films 1080p/2K.

Same reason why national broadcast commercials are shot on 35mm. No one is watching 35mm film at home, they're watching it on a 1080 HD consumer TV.

So, why? The higher quality you start with, the more quality you will end up with. Plus a whole host of other flexibility options that such high resolutions give you. Work with it and you will understand.

Same reason why national broadcast commercials are shot on 35mm.

TV ad directors choose film for the tones, not the resolution. Commercials shot on film do not look sharper than ones shot on Betacams, the colors and tones look far better. Or rather, it used to be so. Check out this commercial shot with the 5DMkII.

It just goes to show you that with the right grading, you can get a look indistinguishable from film with any HD camera.

And DOF over 16mm and 8mm. AND... THEY usually have the budget.

You completely missed the point. It's not Cameron per se, it's the move to higher frame rates. Peter Jackson is shooting at 48 fps. At that rate Scarlet maxes out at 3K -- again, no HDRx and no overcranking. Three-D is not the unmitigated success the studios hoped for. Ticket sales are down. They will do what is necessary to protect their cashcow, including mandating higher frame rates to make 3D a more palatable experience. Even consumer camcorders are able to do 60p, and I expect that trend to continue. Scarlet-X is crippled in this regard, and it's unclear whether there will be any solution in the future. Jim Jannard discussed the possibility of a sensor upgrade to Dragon, which would require installing additional circuit boards to handle the additional throughput, but he added that in the Scarlet-X, Dragon would have a reduced capability, just as Mysterium-X does in the Red One. What that means -- or if it will happen and if it does, how much will it cost -- is unknown. Look, I understand why Red did what it did in killing the 2/3-inch Scarlet, but it'll be hard to trust them to deliver. And if they do, any added processing power will cost dearly (I wouldn't be surprised if it effectively doubled the cost of Scarlet brain). But it's a big "if." And the camera's currently specced features don't all work yet. Red committed themselves to shipping complete, feature-finished cameras -- which is not to say they wouldn't add new features or improve existing ones, but that what they have on paper actually works. That won't happen. It can't be taken from them that their cameras are remarkable achievements, but Red is (by their own admission) unreliable.
You talk that 3D is not the success the studios hoped for, because ticket sales are down. While we are comparing $20,000 cameras, the world is on economic fire. Ticket sales are down because people are cutting back on the frivolous spending and buying expensive gas and food.

I think you are going to see a lot of people boohooing because they foolishly invested in C-mount lenses while waiting on a 2/3" Scarlet. And now they have all that money tied up in unuseable glass and accessories.

Not true. Canon EOS to C-mount adapters are about 40 bucks. I will use my 16mm glass for 2k format. 5.5mm to 120mm at f1.5 to f1.8 max apertures.

Also plan to use a decent set of Minolta MD Rokkors I have for 35mm with another $40 adapter.

So I am covered for lenses to start with. Probably pick up a new Canon OIS zoom or two at some point.

.
EOS to C mount is for using Canon lenses on C mount camera - is Scarlet still C mount??? I sold my 16mm lenses - so I don,t really care, but I was shocked by Nov3 announcement. I guess it was already ready - poor Scarlet - to be born - but was aborted/thrown into garbage bin with all these mini primes (?) by its brutal mad master. Then he reached into another garbage bin - for Epic reject parts - to make quick replacement - so nobody would notice bloody murder. Don't call it Scarlet - she is dead. Just call it Epic-B.

That's how I see it. Scarlet on the boards as we knew it FAILED. This new camera is just a sorta Canon T2i Epic-S. A really expensive one too, after you gear up to comfortably use it (extra drives, batteries, beef up your computer, add PL mount, more drives, more storage, more production time with less shooting because your still grading your image, more storage space, beef up computer again because you went cheap and didn't do it right the first time, down time in shooting trying to figure out how to get that 120fps shot to match the FOV of the 3k shot, converting your footage......).

One thing about the Scarlett is that it is more like a Red One Jr. rather the original consumer soccer Mom design. Maybe Jim should give people what they need (3K 120fps for $3000) rather than what they want.

I'm sure firmware hack will turn it to EPIC.

You know, I was thinking the same thing. Up until now no one has ever needed to hack a Red camera. Now that the scarlet has limitations, it may become a reality. But if it's a hardware drawback then it probably wont do much.

I don't think that will be a problem. I think the only difference between EPIC and Scarlet is firmware and color.

Jim already lied about the Scarlet when he wrote the FAQ:

How can you offer Scarlet-X at this price when EPIC is so much more?

Data rates and processing power. ASICs that weren't fast enough for EPIC… just became a gold mine for Scarlet. This, and board component reduction, allows us to lower the data rate throughput and significantly reduce our costs over volume.

How much does Scarlet weigh?
Exactly the same as EPIC.

Man up!
Were under attack!

Uh, no Jim, those are friendlies.

Did the surge work, Lieutenant?

No one was left standing sir, not even our front line.

Oh, right. Has anyone seen my cigar?

Interesting. Now, another question is if there are any functions built in to stop reverse-engineering of the firmware? Is there encryption? I'm sure Red have never really worried about hacks, so they have never really needed to put effective safeguards in place (not that it means much in any case. Anything that can be engineered, can be reverse-engineered). Red firmware updates are freely available for owners, so it is already easily accessible.

Hehe probably but I'm a bit doubtful this will happen. Its not like VItaly will buy a Scarlet to reverse engineer it, and frankly i don't see anyone willing to brick their 14K investment by doing this... The F3, for example, is really Firmware limited. No one seemed to attempt reverse engineering it...

The Scarlet can way the same and still use different chips. The most obvious is using less RAM – the chips are the same size. Similar arguments exist for lower-speed versions of the other chips, which are also cheaper to buy.

Bottom line: the board can be cheaper, and still weigh exactly the same.

On top of which, Jarred has mentioned Scarlet is a few grams lighter. Also remember that silicon is very, very light. The actual weight comes from the packaging, which will be largely same between Scarlet and Epic.

I'd buy this argument, except the recession has been with us for nearly four years now. The 3D craze took off right in the middle of it. While economics undoubtedly plays a role, the more likely explanation is that the novelty has worn off, the 3D is frequently badly done (or pointless for the subject matter), and for many the experience is inconvenient or even physically unpleasant and not worth the ticket price premium.
