GH4 REASONABLE requests for future firmware

OOPS. Discovered I can do that, actually..

external monitoring (1080/720, whatever) while recording 4k 25p. wtf, this is a big let down

Finally am able to start playing around with my GH4... my request is (assuming it's a software and not a hardware thing) to do away with the 4GB limit on exFAT SDXC cards. I get it for AVCHD, but there is also metadata to string those clips back together in my NLE. The lack of metadata for the 100mbs and 200mbs modes could make this a pain in the rear-end to string along clips during long interviews or events.

Clients are repeatedly complaining about this very issue.

Agreed. For event video, I find it easier to deal with AVCHD because it combines all the clips into one long clip in Premiere Pro, making it a lot easier to sync a multi-camera shoot.

Again, higher bitrates can mean lower CPU load, as the optimization search time is decreased, so the hardware could run cooler. One business reason not to include 200Mbps 4K at launch could be the scarcity of U3 SDXC cards. The only write speed issues I've read about were with 200Mbps 1080p ALL-I (something folks aren't using much as 4K => 1080p offers the best quality (except for fast motion)). It sounds like Panasonic engineering isn't allowed to release much detail to sales & marketing, so we might not know until or if there is a firmware update.

I can.

You have to remember that the data is not being 'thrown out' first, and then the remaining image encoded. The data is being 'thrown out' during the encode process, according to an algorithm. I'll be the first to admit lack of expertise on this subject, but it does seem theoretically sound that 'throwing out' less data would be less computationally expensive, and thus require less processing power, just as throwing out none of it would require the least processing power.

I suggested this in a thread a while back and got absolutely flamed for my views that 4K at 200mbps could be less/no more CPU intensive than 4K at 100Mbps. It became an abomination of a thread, good to hear you views might be the same.

We know that all the Hardware and interfaces can handle 200Mbps so the high data rate is not the issue.

Oh that was you...I remember that thread but I didn't follow it. Us 200Mb/4K'ers gotta stick together...lol

I'd love to see what focus distance i'm set to in the viewfinder when using panasonic lenses

Yeah, that was me!

i also got flamed for suggesting that Panasonic should fix a few issues via firmware. Now there is a whole thread dedicated to it. Good to see :-)

I'm stressing REASONABLE here, stuff that panny engineers could actually get to us in a future firmware.

1. please make it so aperture, iso, and shutterspeed don't stick to the C1, c2, c3 settings. It's annoying to have exposure dialed in on c1 and then switch to c2 (which I have set for slow motion) and then have to reset the aperture, iso, shutterspeed

I DIS-agree with parts of #1. I have my C3-1, C3-2, and C3-3 settings saved for different slo-mo styles, and I don't want to have to dial in shutterspeed every time. It's true it would be nice to have the option for aperture and ISO not to stick, but shutterspeed is something that is fixed based on the framerate I'm shooting at, and I don't want that to change from what I've saved off.

My big complaint are the settings from manual photo mode and creative movie mode that stick. I'd like to see entirely separate settings for these two modes. I accidentally changed the PHOTO (i.e, "rec", not motion picture) photo style in manual photo mode, and had no idea (because I didn't look -- stupid!) that it had also changed the photo style in creative movie mode! WTF?! Who in the world would think that changing the photo photo style in manual photo mode would change the movie picture style in creative movie mode?! Luckily I shoot in raw so don't really care about the photo photo style, I just have to be careful never to accidentally change it again. The same is true for many other settings (WB, ISO, LCD display style, etc.). I wish they could each have completely separate settings.

One change I'd really like to see (though I know I never will) is related to #1 above. I wish the custom WB settings weren't saved. I use custom WB #4, so I have that set in all of my custom slo-mo settings (C3-1, C3-2, C3-3). Before shooting I set custom WB #4. But when I switch to, say, C3-1, it restores not only that I want to use custom WB #4, but it restores the old custom WB #4 itself. I can understand why some people might want that, but the way I'd like to use the Cx settings means that I have to re-shoot my custom WB #4 every time I restore a Cx setting. What a hassle!

My request:
Some method of "locking in" 4k recording so that you can't accidentally set your camera to 1080p. I did this just today...got home and noticed that the last half of my clips were in 1080p because I hit the Quick Menu, without realizing it, when trying to operate another Function Button. This could easily be a menu setting that grays out the 1080p settings when in Creative Movie Mode.

Dvbrother: To help out for now keep "Video Priority Display" on. It shows your resolution and framerate at all times.

Im curious if we can get the same resolutions as the new FZ1000. Having 240fps in 720p and 360fps in 480p could still be very useful.

Jon, I think my issue is that I mapped the Zebra function to the button below the Quick Menu. I often toggle the Zebra on and off and I accidentally hit Quick Menu sometimes which is usually on the screen to change resolution and frame rate.
A simple solution is for me to map the Zebra function to the Fn1 button on top of the camera. Still, it would be nice to have some kind of "lock" function like the c300 does.

1. Focus punch-in whilst recording
2. Focus punch-in whilst recording
3. Wide-DR or log-like picture profile
4. Did I mention focus punch-in whilst recording?

The Gamma Log setting will be great, I have a feeling we will see this come out when the Shogun is out, since a gamma log and 10bit will be the ticket to really showing off what this camera can do. I know its a long shot and not something I need, but would like to see DNG added as well for the shogun.
