7D Re: 7D Mark II

An incremental change, when the market is changing radically. Might be a good upgrade camera for 7D folks. I don't see it taking market share from Sony or Panny though. And yep, the cell phone market is coming on strong. 4K in cell phones will allow for a lot of mistakes to be fixed. Including vertical filming (G!).
Based on market share, I don't think that Canon is too worried about Panasonic and Sony competition for DSLR's. Panasonic and Sony are both much better off than in the mirrorless markets, which is relatively small as a whole. But, hey, Canon is basically giving away the EOS-M right now which is great because I have two of them.

I wasnt saying you can't shoot great films on a Canon camera, in the right hands you could shoot great films on VHS. Content is king blah blah blah..... Why are you on an equipment forum? Why don't production co's spend every cent of their budget on writers and shoot in handicams if none of this equipment mattered? Why is Arri releasing a 65mm digital Alexa if no one cares about the quality of images or usability of cameras? You can still do great things with a 5D. For me though, shooting 5D Raw is not an option as most of the networks don't want to deal with the cumbersome Raw files which brings us to shooting the internal native codecs. All I was saying is that if you are a video shooter and we're looking to buy a camera kit, there is no reason to choose Canon. When companies like Sony and Panasonic are including great codecs, peaking, zebras and other extremely useful video features to their cameras, why aren't Canon? Yes, I could get a C300 or c500 but I do a fair bit of documentary work and being able to travel light is a great advantage for me. Compared to 15years ago, when I carried lugged around a digibeta, sachtler 20 tripod and 3head lighting kit, I am now carrying able to carry a lightweight mirrorless camera, smaller lenses, a sachtler DV6, a small carbon jib and handheld steadyicam rated for lightweitgh mirrirkess cameras and still shoot 4k if needed with the professional aids I had (peaking, zebras etc) on my old broadcast cameras. Canon don't offer that in a small package yet and it doesn't look like they will in the near future. Meanwhile other companies are innovating and giving us video shooters what we need.

Still an easier workflow than Arriraw. With Arriraw you need expensive Codex options and the framesize is even higher. 5d raw = quite manageable with just modern equipment (only downside compared to Arriraw is you have to convert from .mlv to .dng, but that takes like one button)

I've been overseeing a feature shot with Arriraw. The datasizes are huge but still manageable. Networks don't take the Arriraw, it's just the acquisition format... Or are you sending files straight from the cameras to networks?

Mostly clean, but soft and not 100% clean
Much better than the 70D in any case

what about 5d miii and shogun…?

Just found out Canon had this on display at a NYC press event I was invited to. I didn't go for personal reasons that conflicted with the timing, but the Samsung NX1 was apparently also a featured camera that I'm very interested in.

Kicking myself really hard right now. Could have held and possibly briefly tested each of these for myself and reported back. Alas, hopefully someone will get their hands on one and share their opinion soon enough.

As I expected, the sensor performance is very similar to the 70D (here). Just a bit less noise in the shadows, probably because of some off-sensor circuit improvements.

Those DXOmark numbers are REALLY bad for stills. Video will have to save this thing. How can Canon be putting out cameras with 3 stops less latitude than the competition?

Well, to be fair, it's just 1.5 stops behind Sony's APS-C sensors (here), and 2.3 stops behind Sony's FF sensors (here). But that's basically 5 years of technological improvements that they just didn't go for...

One stop is a LOT, especially with raw stills. 3 FULL stops behind the D810, nearly the same for the D750... that's a decade of improvements.
