Raylight MXFX

We've put up a demo of MXFX which is still a work
in progress. http://dvfilm.com/MXFX

It can:

1. Convert 25P MXF files to 24P (23.976) MXF files
2. Rotate the image 180 deg. without recompression
3. Add 3:2 pulldown to 24P

Features 1 and 3 are aimed at Avid users that want to incorporate
HVX200 720/24PN 720/25PN material into 60i projects.

Still in work is a noise reduction feature that also works without
recompression.

Any suggestions are welcome, we hope to start selling it before the end of the year.

How does the sound change work with from 25P to 24P?

It slows it down, which is the highest quality method. We may offer
a time-expansion option in the future, but of course that always
adds a little bit of distortion.

You can always export your sound as a wav file then just use the original audio with the converted video footage in the new 24p time line. That will avoid the distortion in the audio and maintain the original quality and timing.

Is the rotation option possible for Raylight in general, ie when Raylight makes it's QT header files?

If you mean Raylight for Mac, no. Mac version uses the Apple
codec which does not have a rotation feature.

The Windows version of raylight does have a rotation feature.

The rotation feature in MXFX is aimed at FCP, Premiere 3.1 and Avid 2.7
users that use lens adapters, because those systems do not have
rotation features builtin to the codec and also cannot use the Raylight codec.
On those systems the rotation can be done as a filter, but your P2 Viewer,
your thumbnails and clip viewer will still show the video upside down.

Could the Mac Raylight become a hybrid product between the 2, in terms of incorporating rotate?
I'm just thinking of the implications otherwise of still having 2 lots of data if you're using Raylight and want your footage rotated, which is a bit like the FCP QT / MXF data duplication.

If MXFX was incorporated in the Mac version using it's P2toP2 capabilities, then the original MXF's would come in flipped, and be a single source for Raylight to work off.

So the Quicktime Pro Rotate feature is only a filter? I've been scratching my head trying to understand why it's not recognised by FCP after shooting with my SGPro.

No it's not possible on the Mac without rewriting the Apple codec.

MXFX is not going to be a big hit on the workflow because the camera crew should be backing up the MXF files anyway and making notations in the metadata. Once you learn to trust it, MXFX will do the flip and noise reduction as part of the backup process and preserves all the quality, metadata and timecode. We don't see it as an additional step.

But why not have that step as part of the import-MXF's-off-a-card process? Surely this is going nowhere near the QT codec. If MXFX is reading the MXF's and writing out rotated versions in a Contents-card-structure, then why can't Raylight do that straight off the card rather than from already imported MXF's.

90 % of the time with my HVX I've either been cameraman and data handler myself due to budget, or handling data for someone hiring my camera. I don't need another process to think of and data wrangle.

If I had a choice to get MXF's off the card and rotated as MXF's in a 'Contents-folder-structure', rather than having to run this through another process, then I'd lap that up if it was a reliable i import, and keep those as my master.

I want to go Raylight, I'm just trying to find my way through the flipped QT jungle here, as I've got a reliable FCP and P2 workflow (QT's only, no MXF's) at the moment, it's just I need another process to flip them, doubling the data. Same with MXFX too it seems.
Remove this doubling of data, and you've got a new customer.

MXFX can do that but Raylight cannot because Raylight does not make a copy of the frame data, it creates a pointer to it without making a copy, and it's played back with the Apple codec.

I guess what I'm angling at here is that P2Genie has fallen off my radar due to issues with new OS/reliablility/lack of developement, so I'm once again at the 'data reliably off a card' stage. It's been easier for me to do this in a production environment via FCP straight to QT off a card via a Dual Adapter/P2 Store. No problems as yet.

I'm never going to edit off a P2 card in my usual jobs.
All data has to come to my HD first.
So if I can import it off the card as MXF, in a P2 contents folder structure, and rotated, and then using Raylight, then I'd be happy. If MXFX could become this part of the Raylight procedure, doing it's 'MXF to MXF' (P2 card to disk) transfer part, but with a rotate in the middle, and then allowing Raylight to make it's QT reference, then I'm a happy bunny.

Raylight already allows editing off the hard drive.

Hi Mvb,

I've been looking at Raylight for FCP and it's looking like a great application. Question for you, since I edit on FCP and use the M2 adaptor, do I need both Raylight and Raylight MXFX?

thanks in advance,

JP

Raylight MXFX for WIndows is for sale now.

The product page has been updated with a new demo version
which has the noise reduction feature and all the pulldown
add/remove options.

How do I edit 720/25pn on Avid Xpress 5.7?

Can Raylight convert 720/25pn without quality loss into a with Avid editable format?
If so which?
