GH13 RANT! - Why are Canon HDSLR filmers like Apple junkies?

Hi,

I was just coming home from a friday night out. A few hours earlier and without any warning I was confronted by a producer (I knew her) who asked me, which DSLR I was using. Gh1-hacked was my answer. Of course she never heard of it or even hacks at all and started to explain to me the benefits of Canon DSLRs. Because she was talking about green screen stuff I asked her back -really not knowing- if the hacked by Magic Lantern Canons had 422 color subsampling. "Hacked?" she answered. I refused to answer any further but she kept on, telling me that Canons produce the best footage ever seen with the exception of green screen keys for which she books REDs only now.

I know my GH13, with all the benefits (detail/bitrate, flip out lcd, size, lenses, little aliasing...) and all the still remaining faults (No hdmi, audio, low light).

But explaining to Canon-only filmers why I use what I use is SO exhausting, because they don´t listen, they just dismiss everything they can´t add to the pros of their own cams... it´s just like (assumed you have to think budget oriented) trying to explain to an Final Cut Pro guy, why maybe it isn´t so cool to have to work in a closed soft- and hardware universe, where everything costs more because it´s white...or on one monitor only from what I´ve read about the recent update.

/End of rant/

just be content you are part of a qualitative minority. some people are just too engrossed in their own little world. I had a printer once asked if i was working on a mac, my reply was no, his reply was your not a pro if your not on mac...i mean come on...ha. Then again i'm not a "pro" just a "hack"..lol

I learned you can't fight city hall. There's gear for me, then there's the gear that get's me work.
Saves me from having to explain anything.

who cares. just shoot. next time tell her that story and creativity are what matters, cameras come and go.

It's about having different preferences - which is completely fine, people should be accepting of the two. Perhaps what she needs is trying out other's cameras with an open mind and do a bit of inquiry. However, I think the latter part of your comparison makes you just as ignorant (I'm sorry, but a bit of hasty generalization is never good). Whilst I agree that there might be a few people that goes ' FCP IS THE BESTTTTTTTTT ' and I do agree that it's very good. However, not everyone is like that. Just like not every Canon user is like that.

Chill out, Move on, Do explain to her what a hack is, what the ML Firmwares can bring to her Canon so that she understands it's faults, understands your camera etc. It's about forming a nice, local filmmakers community!

Producers will always stick to what brings the cash.
They'll never take a chance trying something different.
Even if it's ten times better ;)

Cameras are tools, that's it...nothing more nothing less. You will never hear a carpenter arguing about brands of hammers. They use what works for them.

Get over brands. Buy what works and makes you profitable. It just so happens that Canon is known more widely and requires less of a sales job for a producer.

It is very hard to sell a paying client on any DSLR. I think none of my clients would be very receptive to the idea of DSLR. There is no need in arguing the merits. I know DSLR's provided good video. However, to everyone (especially paying clients) perception is reality.

I use a tiny dslr, mini-dv, a pocket-cam and premiere. Oh the comments. Just use the most giant matte box you can find.

Jack I hear you and feel your pain on this !!!

Although it's not just DSLRs and Computers but crosses over into every industry, occupation and interest.

They are all no win arguments so its best to nod congenially and turn around and walk away.

CANON users don't listen to why the GH1/2 could be the better camera & GH1/2 users don't listen to why the CANON could be the better camera.

don't be sucked into the "our side/team/country/religion/idea is always right" syndrome.

people who buy CANON or APPLE are exactly the same as people who buy PANASONIC or WINDOWS.

we are all free to buy what ever we want and we all view things differentially and have different things we hold as valuable features  lets get on with creating something.

instead of whining about who has the best equipment we should be congratulating people for the best content!

imagine a world where people were remembered for having things and not for the things they created by having those things!

that may be true,
but i think MY main consideration towards the subject is a matter of:
- personal taste. i MYSELF prefer the looks and behavior of GH2. greatly prefer it.
- plain facts. even a 'paintbrush' can be made more efficiently and professionally. why limit yourself?

besides, if this thread is about people unaware of GH13/2 power and think 5D is the only option,
then it IS kind of important to let them be aware of the fact.
(and this could also bring more work to people using GH cameras as their money making tool)

yip personal taste/choice is exactly what i'm highlighting  different people, different cams, different needs.

i'd imagine everyone reading this thread in the GH section is aware of the GH1/2 cameras, a better way to raise awareness is to get out and create more short movies, music videos, adverts & promos to attach more credibility to the GH cameras.

i will take a guess and suggest those are the things that may have given the CANON camera more of an 'industry standard' role.
(what the person puts into their work is what will bring more work to them)

more PANASONIC users attack CANON cameras than CANON users attack PANASONIC cameras

maybe its PANASONIC users and not CANON users who are in the wrong

Don't care at all. I'm creating full power and getting more than
I hoped for with GH2.
Just saying.
