Ptool for beginners / Ptool FAQ

Tester13,

Second, let's say Panasonic comes out with a firmware update version 1.35 , and we have already updated our cameras to say version 1.38. Can't we use the ptool application, and the new "GH1__135.BIN" from Panasonic, open the "GH1__135.BIN" file in the ptool application, and change the version number of the new Panasonic firmware update to say version 1.39 and then be able to update our camera's firmware to the new Panasonic firmware? Does that seem possible? Or is the ptool application only compatible with "GH1__132.BIN"?

Best,
-Tim

Who wants in the near future update a Panasonic new firmare ?? Which firmware ? A retrograde firmware ??? Kidding but facts.

GF1 have almost all patches, including AVCHD bitrate and MJPEG bitrate adjustment.
No, we don't have variable framerates.
And we don't have variable resolution, only scaled 1920 on GH1.
As for stills, I don't have any real plans as of today.
My main complains for stills are bad random internal flash with manual glass and no focus confirmation for manual glass.

Tester13, many many thanks for taking the time off your very very busy timetable to answer my question.
Is it in your future plans to eventually get the GF1 to:
1- shoot HD 720p at 24p (or 25p)?
2- implementing full manual control over video?

Firmware loaded - now what

Firmware loaded - now what

I dont have a GH1 but a friend does, do I'm trying out the firmware on his. The firmware has been flashed on the GH1.
Now the menu give a choice of Mode i.e. 720P 1080P and Compression i.e. MJPEG and AVCHD.

Is there anything else that needs to be done to record in the higher bitrates ?

P.S. I can access his camera only tomorrow, and I was hoping someone could give me an answer sooner :-)

Yes you can shoot 720p at both 24 and 25p
I haven't heard of that being worked on yet. He should have the Gf1 soon. Keep checking back.

Follow these two threads for settings on bitrates for the AVCD and MJPEG

How often can you update the firmware?
ptool allows entering 999999999. Is that the limit, or could there be a much lower limit?

is modifying the AVCHD bitrate alone will not cause the clip not playable in camera?

or i read somewhere that modifying the audio bitrate will cause the clip not playable.

Modifying the audio bitrate causes the clips to not play back in-camera.

You can modify the video bitrate all you want, and you can choose native 24p/25p, and the clips will still play back. But if you change the audio bitrate, they won't play back anymore.

That's not certain yet. Besides, keep in mind that everything is undergoing RAPID change. It's developing very, very quickly. So what you think you might know today, might be obsolete tomorrow. For example, the very next thing we might see incorporated in the Ptool program is 4:2:2 MJPG. That's huge. If tester13 could get the MJPG to run at a true 24fps, with 4:2:2, then it might become the favored format over AVCHD again.

Ok so bottom line is to give this whole project another month of testing I guess.

But for now -

1. Ambiguous 1080p
2. Frozen SD cards

Bottom line for now, as far as I'm concerned:

1. 1080p AVCHD is here, now, ready to be used, and it works fantastic. No further improvement is necessary. If it comes, great -- but it's not necessary.

2. If you use a Class 10 SanDisk Extreme or Panasonic SDHC card, you won't have any problems. I wouldn't bother with trying to use any lesser card. I'm currently using a Class 6 Lexar Platinum, and even that has frozen on me once, and can't handle the MJPG.

The GH13 is here today and it's the real deal. Use 1080/24pN AVCHD and a high-quality Class 10 card.

THANKS!!!

So all I need is to get a pricey card.
so 108oP 24P(native) that plays back in camera is here now without side effects.

Get a card that can easily sustain the bandwidth, yes. The SanDisk Extreme is the one that appears to be coming out the tops in all the tests.

Yes, 1080/24pN is working great, plays back in the camera with no side effects, and has the better progressive 4:2:0 chroma.

Don't change the audio bitrate. If you change the bitrate for audio, it won't play back in camera. (yet ... who knows what tricks tester13 still has up his sleeve...)

I'm still hoping for better bitrate/codec in avchd for still shots and scenes with smooth gradients. Outdoor shots and brightly lit interiors look amazing now, but any part of a scene that slips into shadow still has ugly banding. The test I always do is point the camera at the corner of two white walls that are lit indirectly (cloudy day). Any part of the shot that is in the left half of the histogram exhibits noise and banding.

Of course I don't care if it's avchd or mjpeg. Maybe 4:2:2 will get us there or close.

The codec/bitrate have nothing to do with banding. Best bet to solve that is to get a new GH1 then sell your old body and new kit lens separately on ebay and cross your fingers you got a sensor from the new batch.

PTools patch settings online database available ! - Needs your input.

PTools patch settings online database available ! - Needs your input.

With everyone working together trying to arrive at the optimal group of patch settings I though I may try to contribute in some small way by creating a simple database of PTools patch settings using Google docs / forms.

When you have a set of patch settings worth sharing with the rest of the members simply go to:

http://bit.ly/PToolsForm

and quickly fill in the form listing your settings. You get to name them for easy reference in the forum threads.

To locate a specific named patch set or a user's settings simply go to the list at:

http://bit.ly/PToolsList

If everyone will start contributing their settings to this simple database I believe those that are tracking testing (tester13 and others) will be able to compare and contrast settings and results much easier. Regular GH1 enthusiasts like me will also have an up-to-date, complete, and easy reference for setting up PTool.

If anyone has any suggestions for changes to the form or anything else please feel free to contact me directly.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, but I'm talking about this kind of banding...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colour_banding

...not the fixed noise pattern. I see it at ISO 100 and it fits the contour of the subject. It's a characteristic of 8-bit compression so I don't have a ton of hope that it will go away, but I feel like it could be improved.
