I think FCP will have some sort of 4K support much sooner than everyone seems to think, most likely by the end of 2007.

no sense in getting worked up about it now, let's wait till we get our cameras and see how things evolve. There WILL be solutions.

What are you editing on these days, Jarred? Weren't you a Vegas man at one point? Didn't I read that on here somewhere? Or I guess you're an Avid man with your super dooper comp.

Definitely a Premiere supporter...one of the only editing packages right now to actually edit in 4K...plus with the excellent integration between AE, and the rest of their package.

I am not sure yet....FCP or Premiere...

I have always use PC and Premiere, which by the way CAN edit 4k (it is resolution free software). But I am thinking to buy the best suited tools for the RED workflow.

A good videocard, I'm thinking to Blackmagic DeckLink HD Pro 4:4:4 PCIe — $1,195 or DeckLink HD Pro 4:4:4 PCI-X — $1,495 Both are PC and Mac and works either with FCP or Premiere

A good RAID system....like 16-24 HDD SATA 500GB in RAID 60

And the choice of software and computer that goes with it. Apple seems to have something to come, with Shake stopping, the promise for new compositing package and the purchase of Final Touch...

What I would like is to stick to REDCODE QT codec all along the postproduction steps, as is looks so good and not so heavy (4k RGB 12bit lin, compress REDCODE 10:1 would be 42,5 MBytes/s)

But would it be a heavy process to play it? Also How would it handle multiple generation?

It is now too early to say what to choose, I need more info on the exact workfow

Avid! - On a shiny new 8 core Mac (when available) with an Nvidia Quadro FX 4500 or higher.

..Oh and a G-Tech G Speed XL 4GB Fibre Channel Raid!

How about Vegas?

Yes, how about? Let's face it, on-line 4K is going to be impractical for quite some time, and overkill in many cases. Who has a 4K monitor? I think a lot of people are going to wind up editing at HD resolutions and then conforming their 4K footage. The result will be snappy performance and greatly reduced hardware requirements.

Vegas's excellent audio capabilities alone make it a contender.

I almost switched to FCP but after discovering Cineform and comparing the programs' capabilities of image processing and work-flow, I believe I'll stick with PP2 (or whatever newer version that may come out).
AVID is absolutly out of the question for me.

To me the question is a little odd. You ask what system will we finish on then go own to list FCP and Avid, which too me are offline options.

Now I know that the Avid DS Nitris can handle 4K, but it is by no means a big player in the 4K conforming and online world, nor even in the 2K world.

To me the question would be better split into two:

1. What system will you Offline in:
Avid Media Composer, Avid Xpress Pro, FCP or Other

2. What system will you do a 4K Online in:
Discreet Lustre, Discreet Fire, Baselight, Quantel IQ/Pablo, FCP (if it can handle it by then), Avid DS Nitris or Other

As a side note I feel a little bad refering to finishing as a 4K Online because 'online' is a video term, and when you get to 4K you are really in the world of Digital Cinema where they are refered to as D.I.s (Digital Intermediates). Obviously this is a very minor issue, but sometimes people from Feature Film backgrounds do get a little confused by the term 'Online'... maybe we should use the term 'Conform' as a way of refering to both video and film finishes...

How does the poll generate 104%? I'm confused. But I'm also a FCP user and I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Adobe has some sweet integration with the Production Studio Premium and so I am sticking with Premier Pro. PP2 has pretty much regained parity with FCP... and it can actually online 4K if that is your desire. I'll probably offline in 2k to get a balance of speed while still having a reasonable idea of the image quality while editing... and realistically, I'll probably be outputting in 2K anyway so there isn't much point in crushing my system under all those bits.

The wildcard is Newtek with their just about to be released NLE that they are touting as "the worlds fastest editor" and resolution independent. Seeing as how it will be only $500 it would be worth downloading the demo to see if it is a viable option.

That almost sounds like an AA confession..."Hi my name is Lance, and I'm an addict." Reference to Prison Break to those of you who watch.

FCP based on Mac is standard in US but not crossing Europe, for example.

Not so in Switzerland at least, although some may argue Switzerland is not in europe, it is, just not part of the EU (yet). I'm under the impression FCP is quite commonly used in France also. I don't have any hard info, but it seems FCP is definitly gaining ground everywhere. I've heard from a few post houses getting FCP systems even if they already had Avids. One of the reasons, is europe is late in the game regarding HD, and as production houses are trying to play catch up, when it comes to HD capable systems, FCP comes out cheaper than Avid.

Anyhow, without knowing what's in store with FCP6 (or when it will be available), presently I'm planning in editing in DVCproHD (1080p25) with FCP. Then conforming the 4k somehow, that'll have to be dealt with the lab, if a project goes to film for distribution.

Cheers,
Damien

I stand though corrected but only for film use where AVID rules crossing Europe, maybe including Switzerland. For some film professionals (not IMHO) FCP is considered like a toy. However, I use Premiere Pro and I don't give a damn if they share the same opinion. Apple rules but only in US.
