Pmw F5 & F55

One of the better definitions I've head for what constitutes a "good" camera is "one that imposes the fewest limitations possible."

While a lack of limitations is desirable, I'm not so sure I agree with that. As gear oriented techie type people we are always looking at the boundries of the specs. But the boundries are not the most important part. I contend the most important thing is the image in day to day shooting and this is why the Alexa wins even over Reds.

It just produces a beautiful image most of the time. It's not the highest resolution, so okay you can't reduce motion if YOU made a mistake and made it too shaky. Still, a large number of people prefer the Alexa image over that of all others. And if you're using the camera correctly you're not running into limitations.

That's why the F3 will still have legs for awhile. The S-log handling of skin tones, DR and highlight handling is right up there for a lot less money.

I made that comment in regards to the query about who would still be interested in buying yet another camera. It was intended as a general comment, that was most dismissive of cheap solutions like the DSLRs.

The Alexa is a camera that does a great many things right, and imposes very few limitations:
*Great 2K/HD images
*Easy SxS ProRes workflow
*Standard PL mount
*Quick and easy shoulder mounting
*120fps
*Professional I/O

among many others. I wasn't shooting down the Alexa at all. I wish I could afford an Alexa.

Actually, I was aiming that response more at the people that think using 4k is the big advance. I don't feel that 4k is the desirable advance at this time. I've always found certain 4k images to be sort of plastic and rigid.

The big advances I see in the new camras are (probably as we don't know yet) a big usable DR, a big color gamut, higher data rates, but still some compression for reasonably sized files, etc. Personally, I don't even care about 4k. Its the other stuff I want.

Now we just need to know prices.

This is the precise reason why I chose the F3 recently. I could definitely use the RED Epic for my fashion stills projects, but it has always felt better in the handling of the darks rather than the highlights to me.

So the update on pricing is the F5 pricing is coming next week....as in monday hopefully?

I love the F5 specs (Love the F55 too but going to be way out of my league) and also that they have the accessories for it too.
Not a fan of a Joseph and his amazing Coats of Colours Accessories for the SLRs to be honest.

Nowhere advertising the specs of the Shoulder Mount or any of the other Accessories yet?

I love the review given by Richard Lewis.....he is so laid back talking about such a High Tech bit of Equipment as if he was telling you about a new toaster.

What's great is the F5 and F55 have identical designs so when your F5 has earned you enough to upgrade to F55 it will be painless.

I saw this on the redforum... Don't know if this is the right pricing!

So roughly $32k for the F55, $19k for the F5 and $5.6k for the R5 recorder. Anyone who went in on the F55 deal with Creative Ventures just did very well for themselves!

Yeah... let's hope they hold their promise on this one.... 9000 euro is quite a save! That just bought you everything else you need to go raw and EVF

As Nate pointed out, the F3 has always sold for less in the US than just using the exchange rate on Japanese prices. It could be $28k on the F55 and $16k on the F5. Man, my wife is going to shoot me if I buy another camera. LOL

"But... I.... Need it?"

Try though a variation where the question mark is exchanged with an exclamation mark and maybe a couple of variations where you have a flat hand to the table and on with a fist. If none works, be happy if you still get dinner served ;)

+1 on the wife thing. She runs the business side of things and likes to see things like business plans. I like to see things like new cameras.

I've been teaching my wife all about the benefit of 4k for cinema, and more than anything it helps me rationalize my own decisions (or notions) most of the time.

I wonder how the FS700 will look with the $8k or so additions to get 12bit 4K RAW?

If it boosts DR by a stop or two, it could be interesting.

It is interesting to discuss now, ie. $6-8k to get 4k 12-bit RAW out of the FS700 ($9k camera).

Now with BlackMagic hyper deck shuttle announcing ProRes support for $15k total you can buy an F3 and shoot near 2k uncompressed, Dnx, or ProRes.

Who really needs 4k better figure it out soon.

I know I am certainly tearing out my hair with all the options on the table right now.
