Pmw F5 & F55

I'm curious to see his response. To be fair though, I fully expect the XAVC to be the codec of choice in most future video cameras for the next 2 years, that or HEAVC.

Ok my post is up.

You can always rely on Alister for a tremendous amount of insight to all cameras from a variety of interesting angles! Great response!

Thanks for the chart Dennis,

Do we have any idea how much the SxS Pro + cards will cost? Just one more damn expense to me after filling up on SxS.
So for me big questions will be the acceptance of XAVC codec , cost of cards & cost of EVF. Would love to dump the frankenrig but recording Prores to SSD does remain attractive.

How much lighter is the bare F5 compared to F3 ?

As noted in my original post to this thread, post #38, the AJA Ki Pro Quad features 4x 3G SDI inputs. You may elect to use a single SDI input, two of the SDI inputs or all four of the SDI inputs. Selecting the inputs would depend upon the type of SDI output used by the camera; 1.485Gbps or 3G, single link, dual link or quad link.

The AJA Ki Pro Quad product page on the AJA website denotes "Preliminary features" since the product is not yet released. Just prior to a product release (and you will notice for all currently released products), we provide an additional "Tech Specs" page that details various
specifications of a product; I think this may be where some confusion is coming from. The basic text in the currently provided "Overview>Preliminary features" section of the website does not denote the specifics of 3G, supported SMPTE specs, etc.

The AJA Ki Pro Quad is capable of receiving an 8-bit, 10-bit or 12-bit signal, but the processing, encoding and output are performed at 10-bit.

I hope this information is helpful,

If you were a business man and just had to cut 45% of pure profit off your most popular product, it's time to reevaluate what you're doing.

I continue to be amazed that so many people believe this ^

Especially so because RED have now got the price of the EPIC down to around where they first launched the RED ONE. RED are exactly where they want to be, which is to make a sensible profit on every unit produced. Not obscene profit--that's not sustainable--but sensible profit. I predict that DRAGON, which is a $6K upgrade right now, will, after a few months of shipments, become the new standard at RED's favorite price point. Those who can earn money with their cameras on day one will never regret buying in to an ever-increasing value proposition. Those who cannot tolerate the idea that tomorrow will be better than today will be forever frustrated by companies like RED.

SONY have done something really amazing with the F5 and F55 designs--and RED have said as much. But what's in the fine print? Price aside, the SONY looks fantastic, but they could yet screw it up with arbitrary limitations. And they can really screw it up by unbundling their systems so as to make them too expensive for the features which, from a manufacturing point of view, cost them almost nothing (i.e., firmware). If SONY offer a complete, production-ready product at a strong price point, they will take a lot of share in a market that has not yet standardized on the Next Big Thing. If SONY offer something that's no better than RED at a price that's about where RED is, I think they will win people who love SONY, but they will lose longer-term to a very nimble competitor who will bring many more great products to market in the coming months and years.

Well said. But what I wonder is what exact market segment is left to sell to? I mean by now people have already invested in RED, Canon, Panasonic, BMCC, NEX, and heck even the F3 - just where does Sony think this "new" consumer lies?

Yes, it implies constant sales volume rather than different point on the supply/demand curve. There is an optimal price at which price x unit sales volume will produce the most profit. That point might be closer to 20k than 35k.

im overjoyed by sony's sudden change of heart then again, they couldnt help but have new proprietary crap again

it seems you can input aes or 4 channel mic/line through the xlrs. includes 24bit 48k LPCM

the external recorder's card are tiny, i thought they would be about 2.5" SSDs.

The sector is clear to me - me!

Basically those who want a decent S35 video camera and are prepared to pay a bit for it

The market appeared with DSLR and then there was a bunch of first gen reactions to the desire for S35 - F3- C300-FS100-af100

Now we all know that those cams are a little limited, for a start 1080 doesnt get you any space to crop or deshake and then delivery 1080

And they all have fairly thin onboard codecs and dont seem to resolve as well as something like my EX1

They leave a desire for more and if it comes at the right price there will be takeup

One of the better definitions I've head for what constitutes a "good" camera is "one that imposes the fewest limitations possible." The DSLRs can produce amazing results in the right conditions, but I think we can all agree they also impose a great many limitations. Plenty of people are happy to work around those limitations, but those of us who have demanding, hopefully high paying clients have good reason to seek out equipment that just works. I never want to have to tell a director "we can't do that" or "it won't work." The configuration of these new Sony cameras answers a whole lot of the demands I've been looking to meet.

I for one will trade out my F3 for one of them as soon as I can rationally justify it.

So which one do you fancy? 2k internal recording via F5, or 4k internal recording via F55?

I'm looking forward to some good deals on used F3s.

Send me a PM. My F3 is for sale, I can ship from USA to avoide import fees, taxes, etc..

Id prefer 2.5k-3k raw onboard really, Im yet to be convinced by compressive codecs (having given them up in around 2004 in stills)

Im also not convinced by the voodoo that makes a chip 4k and 2k

File wise I think both scarlet and BMC are conceptually better

But hold Sony in high regard for actually being stable (not crashing) and having service (maintainance/spares)- Id prefer a sony to an 'indy' cam

There's no voodoo, its doing the same thing a DSLR does. A DSLR is natively around a 4K or 5K sensor, then you get a 1080p video from the camera. If you want 2K from the F5 same thing. You're just removing information thats all. It's always a 4K sensor, its just either A) line skipping or more likely b) taking all the info and then downresing to 2K

Telling me a DLSR is not voodoo - very bad voodoo ?

How the sony does it is of course to be seen..

There's a world of difference between line skipping and resampling. The DSLR's line skip, and it shows.

Cheers.
