All I'm asking is for a camera that

1) uses SLR lenses
2) doesn't have issues with moire and rolling shutter
3) uses cheap batteries like the 7d
4) uses a cheap memory card like the 7d
5) shoots directly to ProRes codec or even better Avid DNx codec like the (Arri Alexa for ProRes)
6) has scene files like the DVX
7) has a headphone jack
8) has XLR inputs with phantom power
9) has a detachable remote audio mixer so the your sound guy can mix to the camera
10) has audio meters that can be read from the side of the camera
11) has a built in follow focus, rods and mattebox
12) has a detachable remote follow focus
13) has a built in intervolometer
14) has a slot where you can attach and shoot directly to a removable eSATA drive
15) has a built in waveform monitor and zebras
16) has a 3 flip out screens one for the focus puller, sound mixer and camera operator
17) boom mike shotshoe mount along with an additional shoe mount for another monitor
18) has dual HDSDI, SDSDI, RCA, HDMI outs
19) has the ability to shoot to several type of formats and rasters
20) severe over and undercrank fps
21) audio meters of course
22) firewire connector for firmware updates and ability to control from computer
23) ethernet cable (like Arri Alexa) to control two cameras exactly at the same time for calibration and 3d
24) all for under 10 grand
25) is full frame

I want a camera that shoots for me, so I can sit on me bum all day and make movies with thought control.
Its about as realistic as some of the things you are asking for. ;)

Well, everything asked for is possible, but with an affordable price tag is where the issue starts to arise... :D

Its not a matter of being possible, but practical. Numbers 9 and 16 particularly lost me as "that's not going to happen", and many of the others, such as #12 just seem horribly unlikely to be considered a standard feature as well.

I mean, 3 flip out screens? A detachable audio mixer? Come on, man! Even if a detachable mixer were possible, it would be kind of like the kit lens or internal mic: Sure, you can use them, but if you want to take your work seriously you should invest in aftermarket hardware dedicated and more suited to the task. That's just the way these kinds of things work.

Anyone can make a wish list, just because something is possible doesn't make it practical. There a million threads like this over on mobile phone forums, where people fantasize about "the perfect smartphone", and at some point it just gets downright ridiculous. Not trying to be a troll or anything, but there is very little value to these kinds of posts IMO.

And its made out of gold and has a beef jerky dispenser and while you shoot converts your excess fat into lean muscle.

I need 2 handles that the helium balloons attach to. (so it's not so heavy and if I drop it, it takes 45 seconds before it floats down and hits the ground.)

Don't forget to add the pizza oven, and beer tap for the crew. Also...can it have picture parameters that mimic EXACTLY the work of famous directors or cinematographers....
Just pick parameter 1 for Spielberg, parameter 2 for Kubrick, etc.

Yeah I was joking. But at the same time dreaming. I was actually being funny in a dry way. But at the same time I think many of the things listed should be in a future lower priced camera.

Also making wish lists doesn't hurt, especially when joking.

We are all here to chat about things including things we dream about.

The triple monitor threat was the height of my joke.

The detachable mixer believe it or not wasn't a joke. In the audio world we have many things that you all know like midi controllers. Lots of keyboards out there are midi controllers and just work as an interface and don't actually pass an analog signal through or anything.. that's what the computer DAW is for. Well the detachable mixer could be just a virtual mixer so to speak like a midi controller. So I don't see why that couldn't be possible. All it is is a mixer to control levels.... not anything to pass the XLR inputs through. So in effect audio would be high quality. This would be nice for doc work so your sound guy and use instead of dual recording to another deck. He's doing the mixing work for you but directly to your camera and doesn't have to lug around another piece of equipment. That's my thought.

Also on a last note... dream big my friends. Why wouldn't we?

It's a big dream that has finally made it possible to shoot HD video on a DSLR. 15 years ago that was nothing but a ridiculous joke of a dream... like my post.

But all in all I'm pretty much having fun with the joke thread.

Yeah...any thread that get's people thinking and joking at the same time is good. I was actually only half joking about the Famous Director/Cinematographer presets!

just stick to a subset of your list, the ones that seem most useful and least problematic, and it should be more than possible

All I'm asking is for a camera that

1) uses SLR lenses
2) doesn't have issues with moire and rolling shutter
3) uses cheap batteries like the 7d
4) uses a cheap memory card like the 7d
5) shoots directly to (normanbates: some nice codec)
7) has a headphone jack
8) has XLR inputs with phantom power
13) has a built in intervolometer
15) has a built in waveform monitor and zebras
21) audio meters of course
24) all for under 10 grand

normanbates: plus one of these two:
20) severe over and undercrank fps
25) is full frame
