Panasonic's new version of HPX300

I suppose they'd also have to be really careful not to take too much business away from their other 2/3" cameras. If they released a 2/3" full raster 1080 camera with 720/60P too (like the Sony PMW350) with a lens for £12,000 they'd almost certainly start to see (continue to see?) a drop insales of the 3700 and certainly the 2700 which, once you've put a lens on them, would be retailing at 3-4 times the price.

Panasonic badly needed to fill the gap between their camera segments. At present there is a hole between 1/3 and 2/3 segments. Look at the Sony camera ranges. There is DSR 270, Z7 which fills the 1/3 segment and the 1/2 segment is now croweded with EX1,EX1R,EX3 and the new PMW320, then the 2/3 segment is also rich with PMW350 and the PDW 700-800 series cameras.
Now look at Panasonic. The 1/3 segment is now seems satisfactory with the introduction of 370. There is nothing in the 1/2 segment while the competitor has 4 hot selling cameras. The 2/3 segment, medium budget, look weak. HPX500 is
some what older technology with pixel shifting and DVCPRO HD codec recording.

The other thing we take into consideration while analyzing competition is cost of media. P2 as well as SXS is not bad technology
but still expensive. Look at Sony, they are offering other media, through low cost ($120) adapters, such as Memory Stick and SD Cards for cheaper alternatives. What about Panasonic?. Will Panasonic lower the cost of 64GB P2 Card to $500 or any chance to open a path for alternate media other than external recorders like Nano Flash. If Panasonic doesn't act timely,
chance of loosing market share at a very high margin.

I think 128 gig cards are near and 64 gig will drop in price, the 500 will be updated to 1920x1080 cmos and avc intra and the price will go up to between the 370 and the 2700. That way the 370 is the entry level in their shoulder mount, the 570 is about ten grand more and then the higher end CCD cameras fill out the rest. That's just my guess anyway. The 500 is a tough sell now given it's low native res.

That's not right though. In the UK at least the 370 is £7000 and the 2700 is £25000, so the updated 500 would be more than £25000? No-one's gonna buy that. It would have to be around the £12000 to compete in this market. Then who would buy a 2700?

E series P2 cards are a bargain if you goal is 10bit 4:2:2 workflow, which is an expensive external add on for the Sony's (Ki Pro for example). Plus less hassle to deal with.

Like the box to add on the five year warranty at over $1,147!
Do you guys in the USA not get the panasonic five year warranty?
If you click on the "Learn more" you'll find that is for additional coverage for accidental damage like from dropping the camera.

Not exactly. In mid-March the 300 was $7000 after the $800 rebate, including the P2 cards.

Really? I've been keeping a pretty close eye on this cam, and I knew about the $800 rebate, but I'm pretty sure that cards were not included with the camera. I mean, with two 32GB cards, that's a $1100 value!

I didn't want to go for a new topic just for this, but i really couldn't get the disadvantages of E series P2 cards than A series.Lower taransfer speed?or do they not last that much? What makes them cheaper then origanal one, or reverse?

True deal - that's what pulled me in for the purchase. Of course this was late in the game as my 300 arrived the same day news of the 370 broke.

I was aware of the likely impending new model, but I decided the specials gave enough savings to offset the difference, especially since I figured (well..hoped-sorry) the new cam would debut at a significantly higher street price.

Now, if only my rebate comes before inflation cuts it down to half! :undecided
