Panasonic's new version of HPX300

Just thinking about it I was in the same boat a year or so back when I had a Sony PDW700. I'd had it about 4 months and they released the PDW800 which had overcranking (one of the main things I needed). With the 700 it was a real awkward workaround to get slomo. I was annoyed as the 800 just appeared, with no word that it was in development and that those looking at the 700 who needed overcranking might want to hang on a bit. There was talk of disquitet on some of the forums over that too with a few other 700 owners saying that there should be a trade-in programme but nothing happened. I know business is business but I went right off Sony there and then and haven't bought one of the cameras since. How much is my lack of business denting their global profit margins I wonder? Not much I'm sure!

That is a additional functionality rather than your basic touted and included function like 24p 1080 being usable in the real world , or the dismay of finding 'marching ant' noise on your image in whatever shooting format. However, boy do I understand the frustration and that is amplified at the higher price point too.

As to any protest, its about all we can do as individuals!!! Sometimes we can further 'punish' a company that screws you over or doesn't deliver (as I did when speccing a 6 cam OB truck build for a company a couple of years ago - I chose kit suppliers that would look after us, based mostly on experience). Its just called karma I guess, but the business guys in Harvard may have a longer word for it!

Panasonic has previously enjoyed an advantage here over Sony in my experience. The clever money would capitalise on that rather than see Red ;)

It's settled! My rep from Abel Cine pressured Panny at NAB for the answer and it is (drum roll)...

" there is not going to be an upgrade path from 300 to 370."

So that thought path on this thread may now end.

Well, I've got a certain application that I'd gladly get HPX300s for. The 370s would be nice but hey, money is money, and meeting budget is too.

$6400 for your 300! That'll give you a $2800 upgrade path! PM me if you are interested! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Right there, the reverend has got Erik Olsen covered.

Where are the dealers in all this? The dealers can make this happen. Abel, Spec-Comm, etc... why haven't they come up with a trade-in program? Manufacturers don't do it (and as has been pointed out here, Sony did the exact same thing with the PDW700 & PDW800) but dealers can sell used cameras, so they seem to me to be the most likely candidate for giving people a trade-in option.

Good point, Barry. I was waiting to hear from Panasonic. As it's seeming less and less likely that's going to happen, my dealer will be my next call on Monday.

'Cause the dealers don't know the bottom point for the 300 yet. It's just
after NAB and they're going wait to see the sales trends before they do
anything.

Mikko,

There's a finders fee in it for you if you can get me more than $6200 cash for the HPX300, considering the HPX370 is streeting at about $9200.

I too could very well be in the market at that price. If I told my boss that was an option, he'd be all over it.

Just put my finders fee in as a discount.

I've got to do some checking with the lease company on this, but suffice it to say that our camera will be on the market once I find out about how we can legally do so.

The 300 is a great camera no matter what way you look at it.

With my church's workflow, we are looking to stick with 720p as our standard because that works best for affordable projection. 300's shine in 720p, so i have little need for the 370s high sensitivity imager and 1080/24p skew fixes. I'm guessing 300s will be picked up by those wanting Panny quality, with genlock&tc on the camera at the most affordable price (cause 170s dont have this).

Well, I can't have Erik getting all the attention so I'll put my name in the ring as well (already PMed with TheReverend yesterday).

So, here's me officially putting feelers out for selling my 300 around the $6,500 price spot. It's in absolute mint condition (only been shooting with it since September 2009) and I have all the original boxes/packaging, manuals, etc.

Since I do a lot of 1080p24, the 370 is a worthy upgrade. Please PM me if you're seriously interested. Just for clarification that price is for the camera ONLY - just the way it comes from Panasonic.

How can you sell your cam when the 370 can not yet be delivered?
I gave it a thought and decided that I will not upgrade to the 370 and will wait untill there will be something better than the 370 with CCD's again maybe the succesor of the 500.

Notice I didn't say: "For Sale" just yet. I can't afford to be without a camera for weeks and - as you said - the 370 isn't shipping yet. You can also be very sure I'm not going to be buying one without a thorough demo first! What I AM trying to do is gauge the real interest in buying a gently used 300 around the $6,500 price range...

My church has be very happy with the 300. 720p is perfect for what we do. We keep the gain down and don't have noise issues. I'm sure plenty of churches would be interested in an affordable move up from SD.

I want to see what the real production models act like rather than "buy on buzz". Besides, the longer we hang onto the 300s the more they pay for themselves. And as long as we're looking under sofa cushions to scrape together a 370 purchase, maybe there'll be a 500 improvement that now makes it seem like a better value? But if you are hot to sell:

Selling cameras is more dangerous nowadays. The state of the art of counterfeitting is now so high you must be more careful. I'll be selling my 300 to a local buyer (when I find one) in the Chicago area because I no longer trust money orders, cashiers checks or even Pay Pal. If it's not someone I know or recognizable in the biz here I won't risk it. I suggest you all sell locally and either see the cash or go to the buyer's bank and cash their check there.

I'd say there's a strong argument to say that the HPX2700 is the 500 upgrade.
Think about it, what else could Panny do as a 500 upgrade - it has 2/3"" chips and P2 and it's CCD, as is the 2700. What could they do with the 500 to make it a halfway between it and the 2700? Anyhting less than 1280x720 chips would be a joke these days, yet that's what the 2700 has. So if they give it 1280x720 what else could they do to keep the price below the 2700?

The 500 can go to HPX570 2/3 ULT 3 MOS, that is full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution.
