Panasonic reveals more details of AG-AF100

It may be the angle of the shot but the LCD screen looks a bit small.

I was hoping that a larger LCD might be designed into the camera as shallow DOF is going to need a lot of monitoring to keep the images sharp. a 4-5" screen would be a lot better if one did not have an external monitor along.

Maybe zecahue should have said - "nothing spectacular, just an HPX-170 without a buit in lens and a larger sensor".? - Basically what a lot of people have been wanting for a long time.

Should be interesting to see the output from this camera.

Is the LCD going to be as good as what Panasonic provided with the HPX300/370?

Or is it going to be like the 200/a and 170?

Im curious to see if the HPX370 LCos viewfinder and monitor will make an appearance on the AF100. Along with the other specs i can see this camera being a very useful tool for the toolset;-)

What does it mean by "Designed for stable camera work..."

Are they backhandedly admitting there could be jello or other motion artifacts?
Of course there's going to be jello, all CMOS cameras have it.

I think what you're seeing there with the "stable camera work" is a mediocre translation from Japanese to English. There were other statements in there that seemed equally improperly translated.

WHat's the estimated price on this little beauty?
The only thing they've said is "under $6,000." Take that however you'd like. It could mean $5995. Or, it could be like the HVX, when they introduced it they said it'd be "under $10,000" and it was actually $5995.

So we don't know.

Right now, I'm counting on $5995 and hoping for less.

Honestly, if there's one thing that really bugs me about the design, it's how uncomfortable that handle looks.

edit: It also looks like the VF doesn't tilt?

Actually I disagree. There is going to be various size lenses used on this camera. It makes sense for the handle to be more forward biased and big enough to slide your hand to the center of gravity. I have a 35mm adapter on HVX and with those longer lenses, I sure wish I had a handle like this. Also, I guess most users will be using an off board monitor, hence the lack of tilting VF.

The HD-SDI is the game changer on this camera. This is probably going to be hotter than the DVX or HVX at their best heights. I'm also guessing this camera is going to sell more "micro four-thirds" lenses than anything to date. Best of all it may eventually lead to Canon and/or others competing with larger chip sensors. It also means the next generation of forty-eight thousand dollar cameras may actually be worth the price.

Now we all need to start chanting -- three chips, full frame 35mm sensors, global shutter, at 5k resolution and at the 5k price range. Market competition can get us there faster than we might dare to imagine.

This cam is gonna lead to Sony introducing a competing cam and then 2 years down, canon is going to introduce it's competing cam. What's interesting now is to see how aggressive canon would be with its strategy. I mean just this year (2010) canon is going 4:2:2 50mbps codec and GASP ... Tapeless media !!!! Oh canon pls slow down and let us catch a breather there.

P/s: I rather have canon's Dale division taking over and developing their HDSLR line of product. I mean cmon even zeiss is converting their still Dslr lenses into cinema lens
format, Lucas and ASC are loving the technology...etc how many more hints do they need ?

They may be expensive but worth every dollar you pay. I'd personnally rather shoot on a rugged and dependable storage device that never fails during a critical shooting like P2 than a flimsy plastic media like SD. Heard too many horror stories out there.

Can't wait to try the AF100 though, I really hope all the features Barry's mentioned end up in it!
