GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

CINEMACUTEO asked him in the comments, "did you denoise the dark scenes with the 1600 and 3200 iso?" His reply was, "Absolutely." He do not state what software he used, but I believe he have stated before that he uses Neat video, not absolutely sure.

It looks like the GH5 is going to give us 1600 ISO at a similar noise level as 800 ISO on the GH4, and bump up the "you can probably get away with it ISO" to 3200.

For me, and I bet for a great many people, that covers every reasonable scenario I need to accommodate. Huzzah!

Agreed. In my view if a shot needs more than ISO 1600 its really time to rethink the lighting on any camera. A lot more than just noise is sacrificed when we just bump up the ISO on a camera.

If NR was used at the high ISO levels I think what is the important take away is just how well ISO 6400 can clean up with heavily compressed material and NR in post. The noise is likely much cleaner and the sensor retains the color much better at higher ISO levels which means you can get impressive results with NR in post.

NR with neat on ISO 6400 looks like garbage on GH4

Even on GH4 shooting live events and weddings I've never REALLY needed more than ISO 1600 with a fast lens. Usable this high is awesome and will serve documentary filmmakers very well too.

Yup, even a dim reception hall or concert venue can be captured with 1600 ISO and fast-ish glass.

I own NeatVideo but only use it when I absolutely have to. For this reason I won't go over 800 ISO with my GH4, which is still pretty usable with very fast lenses. ( speedboosted f/1.4 and f/2.0 lenses become f/1.0 and f/1.4 )

The GH5 looks to be very usable at 3200 ISO with some NR mixed in.

What are you shooting at 6400? Crows at night with an F8 lens? :D

LOL! But for real, slow motion eats light, and stopping down a little for DOF management in live events is nice. Crisp, clear slow motion low light footage at a manageable f/2.8-3.5 is going to be awesome for weddings and documentary.

I'm getting a 'forbidden link' message. Can you tell me how to navigate to the link. I'm able to get to the home page.

83 slide Panasonic presentation of all features. Well worth viewing PDF.

Page 10 of the pdf is a pretty big deal for green screen work. One of the more obvious signs of a digital key is the white ringing around edges. It is also one of those things that makes the GH4 look more video like than cinematic like. The unnatural edge ringing and halos along edges. If this is true this could be a big step for the GH5 to have a more natural look to it and to shake the stigma of being too video like. It is also pretty darn huge for VFX work. 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 are not perfect for keying but the bigger issue is the damn white halo around the edges of many cameras along high contrast edges. This usually has to get choked out which leads to an even more artificial look.

Page 35 of the PDF is really interesting, where it talks about the "Like 709" gamma curve and a large amount of "knee" control you have over the gamma curve. This should make a big difference when it comes to preserving highlight details.
