Still no word on the HDMI lag? This is the thing the GH4 was the worst at in my opinion, in particular at 4k 24p, and I was hoping it would be a priority for Panasonic.
I thought Driftwood said is his chat that it was good. Not sure what that means and if it is greatly improved based on his perspective. Some people are not bothered by it so may not notice it as much. I also hope it is fixed along with manual white balance not working with 10bit output. Driftwood responded that manual white balance works but he didn't specific if that was with 8bit or 10bit output.
The camera is also on FW 0.43 so perhaps we should wait to find out an answer to that one.
I asked him in the chat and he said he hadn't checked it yet. Maybe he answered later. People who aren't bothered are probably not shooting 24p. In 24p it's atrocious. At 59.94 it's barely noticeable.
I would sincerely hope that the camera can do white balance at 10bit, given most people will be shooting in that format since it's recording internally. The external 10bit pipeline may have caused some issues on the GH4, but with the GH5 having 10bit internal I'd imagine it will be sorted before shipping, if it was an issue at all for pre-production firmware.I thought Driftwood said is his chat that it was good. I just read through the entire chat. Can't remember now where he said it. He may also been answering a different unrelated question. The chat was kind of all over the place.
I use 24p on a Blade and a friend uses 24p on the Flame and both of us don't consider it to be a deal breaker.
It's not a deal breaker but it's pretty bad. And trying to monitor audio at the same time as the lips are out of sync or there's an echo from the ambient audio is annoying as hell. If the 24p lag is at least as good as it is at the 59.94 system frequency setting I'll be a lot happier.
If that's true, then for me the choice is easy. Pass. My #1 complaint - and a big, big one - was the very poor low-light performance of the GH4. I have a lot of money sunk into m4/3 lens and accessories, so I was waiting for the GH5 to see what it brings to the table as far as my #1 complaint, low light. Less than a stop improvement is really completely inadequate. This is where I get off the Panasonic train and head for Sony. All the other bells and whistles are great, but if it doesn't do squat for my key requirement, it's time to look elsewhere. It's been a fun ride, but you need what you need - to each their own, everyone has their own requirements, so everyone's choice is legitimate. For me, the GH5 has not delivered, but YMMV.
Don't care about 96khz, but 24 bit is pretty huge if the preamps sound decent and have a low enough noise floor. That would indeed go a long way toward bypassing external recorders. Having said that, I'm also still interested in the whether or not it can be extended off camera. Even with the cables tied off, the weight of xlr cables tugging on a hot shoe is definitely no bueno for daily professional use. That hot shoe will rip off for sure eventually. Could it be used on a cage, for example?
H.265 HEVC in 6K photo only ?

According to Panasonic's Michiharu Uematsu the UHD 60p/50p mode also uses HEVC/H.265

Confirmed H.265 is in 6K photo only (@17:00).I really think that's a misunderstanding. No mode records to user card with H.265...I think it is only used internally to deal with the flood of "6K" data.
There very may well be a file split, but not at 4GB! On the DVX200 they don't split the files until 48GB, and on the new UX180 and UX90 they've doubled that to 96GB before a file split. If I were to guess, I'd guess that the GH5 gets the 96GB limit (which, of course, means that you'd never have a split file on a 64GB card, and you could only ever get one split file on a 128GB card, and a maximum of two split files on a 256GB card).
Of course if you shoot AVCHD it will still split the files every 2GB, that's part of the AVCHD specification. But I doubt a lot of GH5 shooters will be using AVCHD (or does it even have it? I forgot to check).
Out of curiousity, which Sony are you looking at for better low light sensitivity? A7SII?
