GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

With a 99 dollar upgrade fee to enable each axis.
That's what one might call the "axis power".

In any case, the new Sony A6500 also has 5-Axis but no 10-bit recording, including the HDMI out. It's 4:2:0 internal and 4:2:2 via HDMI. A6500 will retail for $1,400 and, IMO, it will make it very hard for GH5 to get away with more than $1,600.

Well, the GH5 will have:
Internal 10-bit 422
Most likely better rolling shutter than a6500
Better native lens selection
A headphone jack (incredible!)
No 30 minute limit (unbelievable!)
Who knows what other improvements

I jest somewhat about the headphone jack and time limit, but it's getting pretty ridiculous now that Sony releases what appears to be a video-oriented camera for $1400 with neither of those included.

Panasonic could very well push the price higher than $1600. Besides, it kind of seems that most people are pretty set on one brand or the other so that it would take a lot for anyone to switch to another brand.

Shenan-

I slightly disagree.

With the range of adapters available for lenses, i think it is pretty easy to change camera systems.

But this is about the GH5 and as a longtime Sony guy who shoots s35, I'm very interested in a GH5/m43.

Be well.

Also the a6500 offers no 4K 60p and it's necessarily faster sensor readout, no DCI format AFAIK, nor the killer battery life of the GH4...

OT it's strange that my GH4 still works after the GH5 announcement! :D (just messing in good fun)

A classic from the 1980's by Steven Wright -

"I had some eyeglasses. I was walking down the street when suddenly the prescription ran out." (then he does a quick impression of a blind man).

Rob, I see what you mean, but adapters are not always available for every transition of different lens mounts, and if they do they are most likely mechanical only so no auto-focus, IS, or iris control on electronically controlled lenses. Even if there is an electronic adapter available I understand that they don't work 100% as well as native lenses would. I still think it's a significant hurdle for many types of system moves. For instance, I think it would take a lot for someone invested into MFT lenses to move to Fuji x-mount because it would involve selling a bunch of lenses etc. It can certainly be done but there's a threshold to be crossed to be worth the bother.

Peter, thanks for reminding me of those! I also forgot to mention system weight and size, and overheating.

Nothing in the press about additional color spaces. 10 bit is nice, but adding "V-gamut" would show they are serious about improving the color on the GH5 over the 4. Rec709 is a DISPLAY color gamut, designed for phosphor based CRTS 26 years ago!! Way past time to move on.
Doesn't Sony include S-Gamut on their A7s series?

My understanding (which might be faulty) is that Rec709 is used on a display, internal or external, to give a better idea of what a V-Log recording might look like. I don't think the GH5 would encode Rec709, rather uses it to help when monitoring the washed out look of V-Log.

V log is a gamma, not a color space. Video is encoded with a color space. In the case of the GH4, it is Rec709. The reason V log looks washed out is because of the saturation and flattened contrast, not the color space. Most manufacturers have their own proprietary Wide Color Gamut - Canon - Cinema gamut, Sony - S Gamut, Panasonic V-gamut and Arri - Wide Gamut and RED - RedColor 3/4/... most don't incorporate those wide color gamuts into their DSLRs - except Sony I think.

The sensors they use are of course quite capable of capturing a wide color gamut - it's just GH4/GH5 users need to demand that they implement a wider color space. I would gladly pay for a V log / V Gamut option! People are just not aware at the DSLR level and that's why I'm posting here.

It would be nice to see the Rec.2020 (UHD) color space available in the GH5, to match it's C4K and UHD recording options.

Through all the rumors, discussion, and speculation..

Has there been any indication of improved IQ/sensor on the GH5, or just codecs and bitrates and recording speeds?

I believe it was based on another M43 Panasonic sensor... was that one any better than what's in the GH4?

Should we expect to see ANY improvement in lowlight or dynamic range on the GH5?
