GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

For me, the a6300 is what I'm looking for as the next step to my GH4. Working on selling it with my Olympus 12-40 2.8 and Ninja Star, should get enough for a6300 body and decent lens. It's those 14 stops and slog3 that got me. Concerned about rolling shutter and heat but willing to take the plunge as I'm ultimately aiming for a Sony FS7 and this would make an ideal B cam - same sensor size, DR and log options.

If I could not shoot my (USA model) GH4 for 3 hours continuous Video on 1 battery, I would not keep it.
And I will not buy a GH5 unless it can do so also.

Hmmm...what are you shooting that requires that..especially in a DSLR form factor with non-parfocal lenses? or are you going B3 adaptation?
I can't think of a mission critical continuous situation that I would depend on battery as opposed to AC.

GH5 will make Sony A6300 worse choice. GH5 may have full sensor 4k at 60P or at least 30P. It may also have internal 4k 10bit with HEVC. Better handling, better ergonomics and EVF.

Just quessing but the GH4 was so much ahead of other cameras that a major step up with GH5 will be realistic. Panasonic sells 4k 60P HEVC televisions and there are chips capable of recording that too. Samsung NX1 has HEVC recording over a year ago and very fast sensor. Also Panasonic DVX200 camcorder has already "GH4 sensor" with 4k 60P.

I would rather have a CamCorder because I shoot 99% Video, but the DVX200 is not it, so bring on the GH5.

I love how Panasonic is still working on the GH4. So glad I didn't go with other brands that dump out a new camera every 6 months. The gh4 has gotten so stable even and it only get better every firmware upgrade.

Aside from the rumor, I get the sense that there is still some life left in the GH4. Panasonic has been talking up the camera to retailers as if it was still a very current model. I hear it wasn't a "clear out stock" kind of thing.

It's possible that there will be further anamorphic enhancements.

GH4 is discounted down to ~ $1,100-$1,200 now, if you include everything that is being given away with it. YAGH is REALLLLLLLY discounted (I think one can have the combo for $1,700, which was the original price of the camera alone when it came out). Panasonic can probably sell it for a couple of more years as it has done with GH3.

As to full frame, Panasonic can just update Leica SL but that's unlikely to happen right now due to SL just coming out last fall. A usual 12-18 month grace period might have to play itself out. They will likely skip s35 in anything but PL mount, which is coming out in a couple of days as Varicam LT (ain't gonna be cheap).

So, overall, they pretty much have to do an MFT camera soon but, at some point, they'll have to move up in size as well and rebadge/redo Leica's full frame lens lineup.

Agreed. I think that they have room to do full frame. Most full frame cameras are north of the GH4's initial price. So they could slot a new camera above it just fine. The question is whether or not they see any merit going that route. That's an entirely new line of lenses. There are already a ton of proprietary lens mounts out there. May not be worth it to them. Not a big enough market for it. At least with m43 they have a little niche carved out and can share some of the burden with Olympus.

If the GH5 is delayed until 2017 then it's probably because it has to be significantly better than the GH4 to convince GH4 owners and everybody else to upgrade to the next model. For me this is going to be 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording at the minimum, otherwise I may switch over to one of the Sony mirrorless cameras. Panasonic has to give me a good reason to upgrade to the GH5.

And what Sony mirrorless camera does that?

Leica already makes a full line of Leica mounts and Panasonic helps them build the cameras. A full frame Panasonic could/would/might then be a mildly improved version of Leica SL. If something like that comes out, however, I wouldn't be surprised if it looks more like a camcorder/AF-100 rather than a DSLR.

And if the push comes to shove, Panasonic could just give away an adapter for the EF or E mount glass.

No camera right now, and I don't think Sony would ever go this route unless they were forced to by competition.
( I was surprised that the FS5 can't record 4K 10-bit 4:2:2, so you have to pay a little more for the FS7 to get this feature )

What I'm suggesting is that Panasonic has to give us something significant to convince people to upgrade to the GH5 and stay with their brand.

For me that would be 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording, which would greatly improve their V-log format and eliminate the need for an external recorder.

I don't mind paying more for this feature if it was well implemented, but if this is not possible, then I'm not sure what would convince me to invest more in the Panasonic GH brand.

I doubt that a GH5 would be better at low-light or dynamic range than the Sony A7S II, so they've got to give me something that would make me want to buy the GH5.

Higher 4K frame rates would not be enough. Sure 4K 60p would be nice, but it's not something I would use very often.

An 8K image format does not interest me at all. I'm happy with 4K, and see myself shooting this format for the next 5 years.

Being able to shoot 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 is a big deal for me, as it should greatly improve the recorded image ( especially with V-log ) and give me more options in post.

While I agree in theory, I do not see a consumer still camera getting 10bit 4:2:2 internal recording. Panasonic just launched the DVX200 with the attitude of "what's wrong with AVCHD"...

I also do not see the GH line going full frame. m4/3rds is their territory, on purpose or by way of table scraps. I think the GH5 will be an evolution as so many cameras before it have been. They would do well to improve the YAGH and let it be the 10bit 4:2:2 option with a proper battery configuration as well as XLR audio. Maybe even a recording mechanism for better codecs. Sort of a 'make your DSLR a video cam' module. That way they keep the still camera a still camera yet serve the video market.

Probably. It is not too much to ask but too much for them to give. That is why I think the YAGHuri or the YAGHessy would be their best bet. Keep the camera priced normally and let us pay to make it better for video. I would rather pay more something without compromise than the other way around as it always is in DSLR land.

What is in the YAGH that make it so big?
Isn't there room for another battery in there?
Perhaps the GH5 will have a better "Brick" available?
