GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

SD cards are getting plenty fast and plenty big enough, I don't think it will need to resort to anything like h.265 to handle it.

A YAGH that worked well with no delay would certainly be welcome. And make it fit above the rails so you can pass rails through the YAGH.

Variable size sensor like the GH2 would be nice, having less than a 2x crop in the wide modes would be nice.

Compressed cinema "raw" would certainly be worth having, might even be smaller than a 4k short GOP stream.

So, what does GH5 have to do in order to be competitive?
the battery life alone is reason enough for me to keep using the gh4 for small documentary work. I sold the bmpcc because it needed too many batteries. I haven't been following power consumption with the latest Sony cameras but for me it's also about the experience I have while shooting.

a headphone jack
You always ask for the moon.

Anyway, A6300 has an alleged 14-stop DR. I doubt GH5 can match that in an MFT sensor unless it's of a BSI variety. Of course, they don't make a BSI sensor, which means that Sony will have to sell them one. And, if they can't match Sony's performance, they will have to pack a lot of features into the piece. Including the headphone jack.

The Sony A7 series batteries are so wimpy that you need your pockets full to complete a shoot.
I use an external power source connected to a dummy battery.
This is even more necessary for the II versions that overheat.
That + an external recorder allows me to shoot the 3 hours equal to my GH4 with one internal battery.

I'm fine with just 12 stops. Maybe even just 11. That's because most real-world scenes have 11 stops or fewer.

Poppycock, someone may say, because the cameras with 13 or 14 stops of dynamic range look better. I contend that it's because they also record in fatter codecs.

A camera with 12 stops, recording in a bit-happy 10-bit 4:2:2 codec, preferably logarithmically, is all I require.

Oh yeah, and a headphone jack ;)

The thing with a greater dynamic range is that it allows a smoother highlight roll-off, so it's sort of like 10+4. That is, unless you're Gordon Willis and want to shoot 3-stop scenes, with two out of the three invisible to a naked eye.

It would be a nice bonus if the GH5 could show exposure values during video recording. I am still not sure if Panasonic want to do it for some reason. Showing too much information during recording may confuse user.

I think I share the same views as Vesku and others on here.

The technology within the GH4 I'm happy with, the dynamic range, the relative noise levels etc - of course everything could be better, but as-is its not bad.

My gripe is functionality - stuff so easily (he says!) fixed by firmware modifications, it would transform the usability of the camera dramatically

I think I've posted this before, but these need fixing:
  • Changing ISO
    • If using the ISO button it removes ALL exposure aids from screen (Zebras, Meter - the lot) Issue since GH2!
(This isn't an issue if you use the OSD scrolling ISO control - werid)
  • White Balance Functionality
    • Simplify WB changing, so we don't have to do the [ISO] > [UP] > [Set] shuffle
Why not have [ISO] > [UP] > [UP]
    • Ability to assign a Fn button to do one touch WB (useful in movie mode)
  • While is P/S/M modes (within Creative Movie Mode). Display the shutter, aperture & ISO values all the time. So we can see what it's doing.
  • Enable AutoISO in M mode (movie)
    • plus enable customisable ISO limit
  • In A mode
    • Ability to limit shutter to 180' shutter angle
  • In P/S/A Priority modes (Movie)
    • Ability to assign ISO control to one of the control wheels without need to press ISO button
    • Fix the Exposure Meter, so it actually works, not just sitting at [-/+0] if its unable to attain correct exposure
If they released a GH4 with the same hardware as today, with this fixes I would buy another one.

People keep bringing this up, does everyone know why there is a 30 minute limit? http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...-limit&p=1986474205&viewfull=1#post1986474205

Taxes, always someone looking to grab money!
In Europe (largely the EU), there's a different tax rate (I assume, Value Added Tax) for the "consumer" and "pro" models. The dividing line that makes a model pro rather than consumer is the in-camera recording that is arbitrarily, though perhaps not unreasonably, set at 30-min.

If I could not shoot my (USA model) GH4 for 3 hours continuous Video on 1 battery, I would not keep it.
And I will not buy a GH5 unless it can do so also.

3 hours might be a stretch of a request, but it should be able to do a solid 2 hours including phantom power for microphones.

Not sure what I'm missing here, but the GH4 does have a headphone jack. Do you mean a full-size jack rather than a mini-jack? Or is there some functionality that the GH4 headphone jack is missing that I don't know about?
Steve

Yes. A big quarter inch jack so we can use helicopter headphones and speak to the camera
"Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, we're coming in for an ISO change... over."
