One new spec...

I just revisited the RED FAQ page where they state:

"An entry level configuration with 80GB RED-DRIVE has a target price of under $1,000."

How far we've come! This is HUGE news - and we like.

P.S. How many gigs does the Venom-pack hold (for what, $40,000...)?

The RED DRIVE is now a mini-RAID for under $1000. It is a better choice because it offers higher speed, the ability to use the entire drive for recording and has a 320GB capacity. The higher speed gives plenty of elbow room for REDCODE RAW and 4 channels of audio... plus metadata.

Jim

Now thats more like it  I should get by with just two of these.

All we need now is the red flash to come in at a cracking price with decent memory and hey presto we have a really good set up.

Michael

Jim, any word on the size of the drive? I remember seeing the CG drive in one of the renderings in L.A... is it approximately that size? Or does the addition of multiple drives increase the volume?

The mini-RAID is a very bright move! What is its interface, how do you connect it to a computer?

Considering the modular structure of Red, the ability of adding another mini-RAID to the Red Cage would be logical for redundant recording.

Fantastic! I agree that I'd rather keep the REDCODE at 27MB/s, but get slo-mo on board. Even if it has to be 2.35:1 for slo-mo to work.

This all just sounds soooo beyond anything any other company has ever tried to put out, it gives me goosebumps to think it's actually happenning!

Hi Jim, nice news!
Just a question, when you say raid, do you mean 2 discs or 3 discs? 3 discs would give some safety if one drive fails when shooting. Don´t know if this is suitable or not for your type of raid. Would be nice with the safety so we don´t loose any data.

Some more camerapics soon? Thanks!

baro: the connectors are the one already announced, from the top of my head that's at least USB2 & Firewire + Firewire 800.

and esata too?

and esata too?

is the esata data bus still available for capture? it's in the tech specs.

My understanding - if they are using a SATA drive, thus a SATA connector. If they are using an eSATA connector, then they can hang up to 5 drives off that one physical interface cable using port multiplication. A 320 GB drive sounds to me like two 160 GB drives.

I'll thunk on this some more and post some throughput figures, but I gotta go run now...literally

Both suggestions would be a good idea!

And about the weight? Still 7 lbs? If these discs will be 2.5", I believe it won't be difficult or am I wrong?

<PS> Jim, still on (that) subject, this is what I would call a good change. Even my Mom (68 years old) said: Changes only for good! And they are 'cause we have the luck to have you @our_side:

Don't let anybody say you're not a caring man, Jim. :)
So, I can just second that!

My understanding is the 7 lbs was always for just to body, not including the digital magazine, battery, etc.

But, yeah, a 2.5" hard drive only weighs a quarter of a pound, so it should be possible to get two of them plus some support hardware and some shock protection into a reasonably light package.

Yes, it seems so. My only concern is a lightweight aim for glidecam use: full package where I should have under 10 lbs for a SLR lens setup plus the CVB's (dvxuser.com member) remote control system including the three motors.

Very good news.

I always felt a mobile raid was the way to go and you guys are on the ball.
I'm not too concerned about a 1/4-1/2 pound here or there, just performance.
I believe you've proved the quality question!
Like others have said, the option for 4k high speed is very important and I'd rather not be tethered out the high speed port (thinking remote-head crane shots here) unless I have to.
