Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

I've come across this, that if you have it set in the 4K2HD mode, but don't have the unit connected to a live FS700 signal, that the time remaining readout may give you 4K RAW time duration. But, the moment I start the signal running from the camera, it switches to the much longer ProRes recording time.

Yes, this was my problem! thanks

imho either you go the Adobe AE / ACR route or the Resolve way. I don't see any benefit in using both.
You can import your DNGs as an image sequence in AE, grade them and render a edit friendly codec to your NLE
Native DNG support for Premiere is announced to be ready quite soon, this could be interesting when available.

AE is a diva and quite slow in rendering. I prefer Resolve over AE. In v10 you have basic editing functions.
I tried to do a rough edit in Resolve and it worked astonishingly well. Render to ProRes and export XML,
import into your NLE and roundtrip back for final polish to Resolve if necessary.

I've shot some quick tests this morning with ITU709. Recording 4:2:2 to Prores HD and also recording the same image to 4K2HD. For the Picture Profile in 4:2:2 to Prores HD, I have set everything to middle or zero. (colour mode ITU709 matrix level 8) Basicially at a factory level.
The images that the 4K2HD records are much more contrastly and saturated. The blacks are crushed by comparison. Personally I find this too extreme.
The images are also ofcourse way sharper.
As you can't adjust the PP's of the RAW signal, I'm wondering if there will be any tweeks to the image. I would love to have the option of something akin to the Cine 3 or 4 profiles. They appear to be a flatter image with more DR.
Thanks.

Quick question Mitch: How do I join spanned ProRes clips? Long clips are split into 3 minute/4GB clips much like AVCHD but Premiere does not join the Prores clips through the media browser like it does with AVCHD. Thanks in advance

Mitch, is there a possibility of hd prores in 120fps? Not sure how this all works. Filmed skiing today in 2k raw so exited to see that shortly
Anything is possible, but we have to see how fast we can properlty encode and maintain both data rate and image integrity. 120fps is very fast. We have 30fps working now with the plan to soon get to 60p. After that it will be a battery of tests to see how much faster we can go.

We are looking into these things.

Look in the folder that downloaded with your new firmware. There is a document called the FS700 Quick Start guide. Within it you with also find the information about the free utility program we created to address this.

BTW, for those who downloaded earlier on yesterday, we added the complete new Odyssey Manual to the download. Lots of additional information in there, including some hidden little functions you likely know nothing about!

Didn't mean for it to be and I take a chunk of the blame. It was not entirely clear to me how much would be on our side v. theirs. Other software like Cine Martin and our course Resolve has no issue, but we know y'all want Adobe products to fully integrate. I do beieve it will be soon.

Yes, 4K2HD results in standard Apple ProRes files, so you can use them wherever appropriate.

BTW, please note how we handle 4K2HD. If you want to use the FS700 & Odyssey7Q to simply deliver a kick-ass REC709 image with little to no post work, set the Picture Profile in the camera to IT709 (that's another name for REC709). If you want to get the most dynamic range out of the sensor and intend to spend time in color correction, then set the Picture Profile in the camera to SLOG2. Please note that for now these are the only two Picture Profiles supported, and selecting any other will result in odd color & contrast performance.

These are two extremely usable modes - I'll be switching between them alot, according to if i know who is going to edit it or if its unknown - thank you for that!
And for everyone still doubting - I've so far only been playing around the prores, and folks who havnt seen it yet you simply have to see it for yourself!!: There is a huge difference between HD and THIS - supersharp hd derived from 4k. wow just wow!

Wow, can't believe how much this thread has exploded in 24 hours!
I see the record time capacities has been updated in the manual and noticed both flavours of prores record the same amount of minutes. My question is what is the point of one over the other? I mean, if 4ktohd is in there, what's the point of 4:2:2 to hd? I'm not sure why you would use one over the other I guess.

The current implementation is Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) in 1920x1080 at frame rates up to 30p. That's a 10-bit 4:2:2 signal at 220mbps.

Here I need to go back to our old phrasing again.

We fully intend to implement additional popular codec formats such as 444, 4K and even higher compression Proxy levels. Where applicable we will implement them in our various recording modes. A 4K Bayer masked RAW signal yields enough color sampling information for a full 444 signal in HD.

As far as the "diagonal fine jaggy lines" go, is this in the recorded images or only on the OLED? It may be symptomatic of the 1280x720 image on the monitor.

444 12bit HD prores has top priority in my book. Thing are looking stunning already tho!!:)

Sounds good. But how about going the route of having the camera buffer its 4 seconds(or8 sec in 2k) and then recording that to prores 25 (or something) I'm sure people could deal with having to trigger the 7q manualy. Just putting it out there - not sure if it makes any sense technically. But if you already have a shoot where you do prores - it might be because of storage concerns (and that the image downscaled from 4k looks damn fine) - and so you'd be hesitant to switch to 4kraw or 2kraw modes for slowmo - and see your hd space go bye bye - along with the ease of post workflow. just thinking out loud here.

Has the waveform issue been resolved? Blacks were coming in at 20 before. Should they be at zero now when shooting? How about skin tones?

Is 422 to hd there as general prores for other cams that don't have 4k raw? Eg you use that for normal prores recording?

Am I missing something? There wasnt a "Quick Start Guide" in the new firmware folder that I downloaded. There was in the original firmware folder but not the new one. I see it reference Clip Merger, however I thought that was for joining files that span 2 SSD drives.

Was that an issue with the 7Q? I thought it was Slog2 not letting the shadows fall below about 20IRE.

The 7q isn't a dedicated FS700 solution.....
