Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

Yeah the 422 is really nice for other cameras. And it will be even nicer to have options as the O7Q matures further on.

For now though, we finally have 4K2HD. This mode alone made the recorder 100% worth it for me. Since it is also a better monitor than my SmallHD AC7, i think CD gave me a really nice product!

Cant wait to shoot landscapes in 4K raw. Thats the main thing i will shoot with that mode. Everything else, 4K2HD.

Has the waveform issue been resolved? Blacks were coming in at 20 before. Should they be at zero now when shooting? How about skin tones?

Yes, the waveform shows correctly now. Although if you are on Slog it won't quite be zero but the blacks aren't elevated as before.

cheers
Paul

I'm afraid that the new firmware was released now. The stupid thing is: nobody is able to sell the device itself. No stock for german dealers :-/

But in case they deliver one to me: will I need a additional docking station to match both SSDs? Or is it possible to drag the datas directly from recorder to PC?

Is it now possible to record each format to the 7Q without any issue? No formatting between shots in RAW 240fps and 1080p 60fps?

Did you talk to Symbiosis to see what the German stock situation is like?

Re the docking station - I'm using a USB3 ICY Box dock (the type that takes any HDD by slotting into the top of the device). Works really well - get approx 220-230 MB per second transfer to my RAID array (although that needs updating really). Too much stuff to buy, not enough cash!

you will need a docking station and there is no frame rate neither in HD nor in 4K above 30p yet, only in 2K RAW.
But yes, you can mix files now. I shot 2K 240fps, 4K 24fps, 4K 60fps, and 4KtoHD 24FPS ProRes all without swapping drives.

For transferring, you can use a SATA to USB3.0 adapter. They are pretty cheap, around $20 on Amazon. There are also adapters made by Seagate that are SATA to Thunderbolt, but they cost a bit more. If you are mainly looking to transfer at your desk, you can get something like this. I haven't used that specific dock, so I can't speak for its quality, but there are several brands you can check out.

I believe it looks at 'A' first, then at 'B'. If it doesn't see anything on 'A', it stops looking. I've been monitoring two cams with the initial firmware release, very successfully.

Same here. Just connecting to SDI B results in no input. For multi cam set ups this could cause some issues I guess if a cam in the early part of the chain goes offline?

It would be ideal if the unit automatically detected which input was being used and just switched to that one. Next it could sense the data stream and have a popup box that directs you to switch modes based on that input. And THEN you could select your recording mode based on what is available for that particular type of input.

Ive had about a dozen people look at the unit so far and wished it were a bit more simple. I think that would be the best way to simplify that. One day, though!

Yes I agree- although not sure that would be possible with the way the code has to be switched in for each of the very different recording modes. As Mitch said, there's limited CPU power and code space which means that each code set has to be loaded separately.

Oh I agree. I think it would be nice if it simply detected the input type and prompted you to switch the format. And then after clicking "yes" it would load things in however long it will take (up to 3 minutes). Understandably it wouldn't be fast but it would be easier. Especially with someone who isn't familiar with the unit, or - for those who are - switching your input when using the FS700 or C300 where there are different formats based on the camera settings.

Just an idea!

I see what you mean - although it doesn't take very long to get to grips with the unit - might be a little longer over time when more options are added.

be careful when buying one of these desk mount ones, I had issues with my CD drive fitting into it. I didn't want to force it, so I just got one of those that is a cable and plugs in. Also, it needs to be powered I believe, because I tried a cable I got from microcenter that was $15 and it did not work. Upgraded to the $20 version with external power and have no issues.

This one works really well and fits perfectly - not tight at all

I got one of those Icy boxes. It can copy the content of the SSD onto a mirrored HDD while i shoot on SSD #2. Very nifty. Does not need a computer to perform the backup.

Which one did you get - the one I posted to doesn't do that, it's just a USB3 device and you have to connect to a computer to copy files off. Basically just appears as a mobile drive.

Actually, the one you posted was an USB2 one. Which would seem a bit too slow for this application. I guess an USB3 version would be slightly more expensive? Do they make USB3 versions?
