Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

This is the feature i have been looking for.

Now i will purchase with a satisfied grin!

However, my dealer said that CD said they dont start shipping to Norway until march. Im also number 8 in line, so if you could speed up progress a bit, that would be nice!

Just now saw that Adobe compatiblity is also in the feb. update. This is fantastic! Apologies for suspecting that you where selling vaporware there for a few days Mitch. Sorry.

It's in Sweden but they have two in store if you don't want to wait :)

Thanks for the tip!

Though it seems they charge almost 30% more than my local professional video store in Norway...

Am I correct in assuming that units shipped after a certain date will come with the updated firmware installed? Do you know when that date will be?

he he funny. Many people would like to know the date of the release of the FW Update. More than many probably ;-)

It looks more and more that if I need to do 4k (and I do), I will have to take the Sony route and buy the R5. After all, Juan Martinez never said that the O7Q is going to be a full alternative. Sony (somewhat like Apple) always had their own ecosystem and it is unlikely that they open up to CD. In the long run, this may be Sony's downfall. If the Blackmagic's of this world would not introduce product at NAB that is not available by the next NAB, Sony would run into serious problems. CD has done a great job so far. Just a little blue eyed when it comes to Sony. I am sure CD will make the O7Q a must have tool for quite a while.

CD has always specified that the O7Q will do 4k compressed and who knows, maybe Sony will unlock 4K RAW at some point.

I got my unit a couples of weeks ago and it already had the latest firmware installed. So I'm assuming they ship with the latest firmware - although there will inevitably be a few that arrive after the new firmware is released that were sent out with the old. I haven't done an update yet, but I doubt it will be too onerous a task.

Dan and Mitch have always been clear that it is purely a licensing restriction from Sony that prevents them from delivering 4K Raw (they've already demonstrated their ability to do it to Sony - and they already do it with the C500 I believe). Likewise they've always been clear that there is no restriction in the licence on delivering 4K compressed. So I can't believe they're not intending to deliver it. The only thing that might stop them is a technical restriction - i.e. the O7Q doesn't have enough processing power to do it. This I would posit is unlikely since I'm guessing it takes more processing power to debayer a 4K signal and rescale it and compress it at HD than it does to simply debayer and compress it...

This just made my day! Thanks so much CD! Been looking forward to this for a while. Time to buy another ssd. Now if only my battery adapter would ship. I ordered Weeks ago. Any idea if they're in backorder?

That's awesome news...

I'm assuming this is a half scale on the 3840 crop of the 4K signal? I'd implore the powers that be to allow for a downsample to 2K as well, a half scale on the full width source would be perfect. We'd get the 17:9 aspect ratio preserved. I would have thought and hoped that this wouldn't add very much effort?

I'm always slightly worried that the 4K option will disappear as well, so holding on for that...

Kindest Regards
Paul
For this release it will be HD derived from the 3840x2160 image area. Others options to follow.

Do not despair over the 4K compressed. We had to do the HD first, then we scale the same process up to do the 4K.

No need to apologize. We knew that everyone would get nervous when we had some delays.

As far as this dealer report, I really don't know where such information is coming from. We have been shipping to our European distributor for months. That company then sends out product to their individual dealer clients. Perhaps the company you are buying from simply didn't put in their order very early.

We just tracked down one rather nasty rumor propogated by a "European dealer". Turned out it wasn't officially signed on as a dealer at all. Instead someone asked to buy from them so that company reached out to the distributor to get a unit. The distributor (rightly) told this company, "well you're going to have to wait in line a bit" and this "dealer" then told the customer a whole load of nonsense about how our product was suffering technical issues and might be recalled, so they were not being sold to Europe at this time. Then they tried to push something else on the clustomer instead, something they could sell right away.

Welcome to a little window into my world. Perhaps you can understand how I take such 2nd & 3rd hand statements with a heavy grain of salt.

At the time of final assembly and testing, whatever is the current release firmware is what will be installed in the device.

And to answer the question, there is plenty of processing power in the Odyssey7Q to perform this task.

I believe we're finally catching up on these accessory backorders. We actually found another facility to do some metal work for us to speed production.

Below are the changes we are expecting to release in our February 2014 firmware update. Some features may be added or dropped as we approach release, but we have high confidence in this list. Also note that the Popular Compressed Codec is subject to manufacturer's certification.

Please note that this will be a free firmware update. Firmware updates require the use of a Convergent Design Odyssey SSD. All firmware within the Odyssey7Q will be updated, so the new C500 functions will be available to anyone who has already purchased the use of this option and will be available to test in demo mode (bar across recorded image) for all others.

New Features

- "Popular compressed codec" in 422HQ for HD (1920x1080) up to 30p.
This is for direct recording of HD signals. Converted RAW signals will come later (UPDATE: see FS700 notes below).

- Free File Combiner program on our website (for Mac & PC).
The "popular codec" is recorded in Fat32 structure so this simple program will combine lots of little files into one standard file. A simple and quick maintenance operation.

- Adobe compatibility for .DNG files.
Use Odyssey7Q-recorded Cinema DNG files in any Adobe software. This change will have minor alteration of Resolve settings, for which we will also publish new suggested presets.

- Mix file types on SSDs.
Record RAW or video, single SSD or spanned files, without needing to change drives.

- OLED zoom frame drag.
In Pixel Zoom mode, one can use the touchscreen to drag the zoomed window around the frame.

- Histogram reference lines.
Similar to the reference lines in the waveform display.

- 1.33 Frame Guide.
An additional frame guide option, noting 4x3 cutoff within the 16x9 image.

- Screen flip.
When the Odyssey7Q is turned upside down, the image will auto-flip for correct orientation. Can be turned off if desired.

- Audio meters & output level control.
Graphic audio level meters in Upper Tool Bar. Audio Out adjustable level control enabled.

- Clean SDI/HDMI output.
Option to remove image analysis tools from SDI & HDMI outputs.

Known Issues Repairs

- Fixed image tearing and dead lines.
In some shooting modes the display would show the image splitting horizontally during panning motion. Additionally a black line could appear across the frame approximately 1/3 from the top of frame or 1/3 from the bottom. These processing errors were only ever in the OLED display and have been corrected.

- Fixed FS700 RAW white balance.
White balance should now track correctly and accurately.

Canon C500 Recording Option Updates: New Formats Support

- QHD up to 60p

- 2K 12-bit 444 in .DPX up to 60p

- 1080p 12-bit 444 in .DPX up to 60p

- 1080p 10-bit 422 up to 120p

FS700 Recording Option Update:

- 4K RAW to High Quality HD, recorded in 10-bit 422HQ compressed codec

The Odyssey7Q will be able to accept the 4K RAW signal, deBayer it and super-sample it to 1920x1080 with our new advanced high quality algorithm. This algorithm improves both the deBayer as well as the super-sampling processes. The Odyssey7Q will then be able to record the HD signal in a popular compressed codec in 10-bit 4:2:2 at a high quality. At this time we can state that the Odyssey7Q will be able to do this at frame rates up to 30p, and it is expected to attain the camera's full 60p frame rate with further development. Additinal further development will allow HD capture in 12-bit 4:4:4.

Hi Mitch, what compressed formats for the C500 QHD and 4k please?

None at this time, but we will offer them in the future.

For the process described for the FS700, one can simply take the HD converted signal coming off the C500 and record that in our compressed format. Canon does a great job with this output and it is as good an output as we would ever be alb to supply.

I'm assuming samtheman meant 4K compressed. Rather than HD from the 4K Raw. Or possibly 12 bit RGB (similar to the 12 bit RGB on the FS700 roadmap).

Just out of interest, since you're answering questions and I'm too lazy to go to the CD website ;-), can the O7Q record the 120fps half Raw from the C500 on it's own to two SSDs, or do we need two of them like with the Gemini?

If it can, that's pretty awesome.
